From the Los Angeles Herald, Volume 35, Number 201, 20 April 1908: The Great Bend mine. The Daisy's neighbor, has come into its own. Here is a really rare Map that had its start by a real photo of the area were many different mining veins were to tunneled into. This large Photo was used by Gold Star Mining And Milling’s draftsman to use Black Ink and to Draw All Areas Were Gold Mining Veins were to be board or tunneled on the mountain side of its mining claim. This Rare Real Photo Mining Map is 8” X 10” The Silver Star Mining and Milling Corporation had 24 active load veins in Bow County. Montana on the Butte and Galena Mountains. This corporations property was located at Silver Star, Montana, approximately 38 miles southwest of Butte, Montana. The Claims Composing its Gold Star Mining And Milling Companies property sits 1 ½ to 2 miles in a southwest ... moreposition from the village of Silver Star. The Gold Star Mining and Milling Corp. property had around 24 located claims and another was a patented claim, the Galina M. S. 3904 which was leased from the Holbert Estate. The entire mining claim are appears to cover most of the top sections of the Galena Mountain range. The Galina Claim was also the main claim and is shown on this all Original Photo Mining Map. The Galina Claim covered portions of several veins in the Silver Star Mining district. Some of the claims located in the area belonging to The Gold Star Mining and Milling Corp. and are as follows: The Galena. Bedford. Silver Star. Morning Star and Gold Star. These are the only names made available. Those underlined are on the Map. SPECIAL FEATURES. A really outstanding and rare feature of this map is that the veins were the excavations and shafts are board shows the quarts outcroppings. This hill side has no trees. I believe this very thin and delicate map is made of vellum.

Note there are two small holes( approx. 1/4" where two folds meet. There is a tear along the top edge, approx. 1/2 inches. This was originally folded as stored as found.

Antique Brass Surveying Mining Map Making Compass Inclinometer Dip Circle 1870
An antique combination Surveying sighting Compass and Inclinometer in fitted Mahogany case. About 1880 or earlier. The Compass has folding sights with hanging hooks for surveying in Mines or Forests. The Inclinometer has a secure standing foot. There is also a Jacobs Staff mount with adjustable ball for steady readings when mapping. The diameter of the Compass is 4 1/2 ins. The Silvered dial has some colorful tarnishing. There is no maker mark. The Mahogany box has some old/poor repairs to keep it together and one hook and eye is missing. ITEM: Up for sale is this antique vintage coal mining map from the Susquehanna Collieries(Susquehanna Coal Company) and dated 1924. The map measures approx. 20.5 x 8 inches. Previously folded, and will be shipped folded as it was found. The paper is a kind of vellum with a waxy type back on it, similar to old blueprints from this time period. Includes a typed description of the area. The bottom right corner states: Susquehanna Collieries Company. Shamokin Division, Map Showing Proposed Lease of Portion of Hugh Bellas Estate in Mt. Carmel Township. Scale 1"=100' Shamokin, PA. April 23, 1924. Also shows tracts of Jesse Evans. William Boyd, Jesse Brooke, William Shannon and William Gilbert. Nice historic Pennsylvania map from the coal region. HITSORY: In April 1867. The Pittston Railroad and Coal Company acquired more than 6,000 acres ... moreof coal lands along the Susquehanna River in and around Nanticoke, in the rich coalfields of the Wyoming Valley in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Only two years later, in 1869, the Pennsylvania Railroad acquired the Pittston Railroad and Coal Company and changed its name to the Susquehanna Coal Company. The new company’s 6,000 acres of coal lands were on both sides of the Susquehanna River at Nanticoke Dam, where traces of its mining are still visible today. During the next half-century men working in its deep mines and sloping shafts took literally millions of tons of hard black Anthracite coal from beneath the ground. Then, in 1913, the Pennsylvania Railroad began consolidating and selling its Susquehanna stock and property to the Susquehanna Collieries Company, a subsidiary of the M. A. Hanna Company of Cleveland, Ohio. Within four years, by 1917, the Pennsylvania Railroad had divested itself of all its interests in mining and selling coal. This map was sent to W H Bryant of Goldfield early in 1907. Bryant was associated with the Mohawk mine and major mine operators. The first is a Goldfield Great Bend Mining Co stock dated 1906 issued and uncancelled, the second is an assay map ca 1908/ 1909 map which is a visual representation of the assay values in the blocked out ore at the time. The share certificate is signed by J P Loftus who was a notorious mining share promoter of the day, formerly of Bullfrog. Including: 3 share certificates: Great Bend Extension, Diamond Black Butte, and Goldfield Daisy Mining Syndicate; one large assay map of the 300 ft level of the Daisy mine; and one assay report on letter sized paper of the Daisy mine. These are the last Diamondfield paper items in this estate collection presented as one lot. 1. Diamondfield Black Butte Consolidated Mining Company issued in 1905 to L Stratton for five hundred shares and cancelled an early certificate of the company which also owned the Daisy mining claims later on. HQ in Tonopah Nevada the mines were in the McMahon Ridge area of Diamonfield near Goldfield. Has typical ornate border with a vignette of miners. L L Patrick ... morehad a significant interest in this mine and was a competitor to mine owner George Wingfield. Certificate is G to VG noting that old tape repairs along the folds have been removed and replaced by ph neutral archival tape. Which is not apparent in the pics. 2. 1906 Great Bend Extension Mining Company was originally known as one of the Knickbocker-Griswold claims and was just adjacent to the Goldfield Great Bend and the Diamondfield Daisy#1. From the Spokane Daily Chronicle Nov. 24. 1906 promoted by notorious L M Sullivan Trust Co: As yet the ground is undeveloped. It is only a prospect. But it is situated so close to the Great Bend, and after an exhaustive examination by competent mining engineers, has been pronounced so likely a producer of"high grade" that its value as a prospect is great and the opportunites for investors who purchase treasury stock at this time are enormous.
