FUGITIVE FIRST EDITION Limited Book"Hawaii's Flowers" by Gertrude Moir 1979 This amazing limited first edition book contains many beautiful depictures of local Hawaiian Flora by Gertrude Moir. This rare hardcover book has some foxing on the dustjacket and inside cover. But all the illustrations seem to be on archival paper- these pages have absolutely no foxing and appears to be mint. The dust jacket has one rip in front on top and one on the back top right. About Gertrude M. F. Moir( University of Hawaii Library) Gertrude M.F. Moir was born in Philadelphia in 1896 and was educated there in music and art. She met her future husband while attending Cornell University. After earning an MEd degree at the University of Hawaii in 1945. Mrs. Moir was a teacher, then Principal at Honokohua School(1953-1957) and Iao School(1957-1961) ... moreon Maui. She was also a painter whose works sold at galleries in Hawaii and on the Mainland and appeared in local and national publications. Some are in the 1979 book Hawaii’s Flowers, which can be found in this library’s Hawaiian Collection. Mrs. Moir was a member of many educational. Cultural, historical and social organizations on Maui and in the state and was a co-founder of the Maui County Library. She was a delegate to the White House Education Conference on Counseling and to Indonesia’s Cultural Program at the Asian-African Conference in 1965. She participated in the U.S. People-to-People Program that sent 100,000 books to Western Samoa and she was a guest at that country’s independence celebration in 1962. During World War II. Mrs. Moir served in many capacities. She was a member of: the committee on planning and manning observations stations; the evacuation planning committee; and the Honolulu survey for the Office of Price Administration. She was a first aid instructor for The American Red Cross(1941-1945) and her MEd thesis at the University of Hawaii resulted in the standardization of American Red Cross first aid tests. MacLeod, artists on the local scene in the 20s provided a wonderful assortment of illustrations that have each been printed in tri-color, a not easily accomplished endeavor 75 years ago. Today, quite an unusual piece. Wonderful verses and equally memorable artwork. This dedicated copy of SLANTS is a lovely little treasure, certainly a special addition to a Pacific Island collection. Honolulu, Hawaii, USA with the total know weight recovered from the fall was 2.4kg. What makes this meteorite so rare and historic is that the Honolulu meteorite is the first meteorite fall to come from Hawaii and that there is a total of two meteorites that come from Hawaii. Lastly, majority of meteorites that hit Earth land in the ocean. And are never recovered for study making meteorites from Hawaii very rare for how small Hawaii is. A meteorite is a meteorite. Fortunately, the log of ship Captain, Otto Kotsebu, survived along with his written account of the meteorite fall, excerpts of which were reprinted in an April, 1984 article in the Honolulu Advertiser written by Rick Carroll(see below) On the morning after our arrival a remarkable phenomenon occurred of which we were witnesses. While the heavens were quite clear. A thick black cloud formed itself over the island. the densest portion of the cloud hung over the town of Hanaruro. The wind was perfectly calm, until all of a sudden, a violent gust blew from the northeast, and at the same time, a crashing noise proceeded from the cloud as if many ships were firing their guns. The concussion lasted some minutes, and when it ceased, two stones shot from the cloud into the street of Hanaruro and from the violence of the fall broke into several pieces. The inhabitants collected the still-warm fragments and judging by them, the stones must have weighed a full 15 pounds each. 2 Vintage wooden bowls from Hawaii. The smaller one reads Haleclau Made in Hawaii and measures 5" across top opening and 2 1/2" deep. The other has carvings on the outer edge and sort of scalloped edges and measures 10" across top opening and about 3" deep. Reads Aloha from Hawaii on the bottom.
