Map is in color. VERY RARE. This map is from the Real Estate Plat-Book of Washington. District of Columbia. Vol. 1. Comprising the entire North-West Section from the Original Plats of Squares& Subdivisions and Additions upon record in the office of the Surveyor of the City of Washington" Constructed under the direction of and published in 1892 by Griffith M. Hopkins, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Maps this early and showing this much detail of Washington D.C. are VERY SCARCE. The map has fantastic coloring to it. Lots of color coding to represent various attributes(white/stone building. Pink/brick building, yellow/frame building, if it looks like an envelope/a stable or shed, and black& white dotted/green house etc. Map in generally good condition(not perfect but pretty nice condition) Some browning and small chips or creases at edges. Map is blank on the reverse side. There is a crease up the middle where it was originally bound. The map has some small tears and chips around the edges. A brown square stain can be found on the top right edge and the top left edge of the map. Caused by the original binding. There are a few pencil marks left by a previous owner. There are some black smudges in the left hand border, as well as some larger stains in Area 188. There are some creases in the paper, but they do not affect the map, as well as some other stains here and there. Some other dings here and there. This map

Offered is a very nice letter from a British merchant in Havana during the brief period that city was occupied from August 1762 to July 1763 when it was again taken over by the Spaniards under the provisions of the Treaty of Paris. The letter measures 9 x 15 inches. Four pages all of which are correspondence, and datelined"Havana in Cuba 27th April 1763. The letter is from Henry Yelloly to his brother who, from the text we conclude may have lived in Northumbria. The condition of the letter is at least fair, perhaps good, with most of the folds holding. Half of the center fold was split but has been repaired with tissue-thin archival tape. The writer had excellent penmanship so the letter is easy to read except for two or three lines along the folds. SEE SCANS for the text. The writer has some interesting comments about Pensacola and ... morealso the relationship between the British military in Cuba and the local clergy. Clearly Mr. Yelloly did not think much of the Spaniards, and even less of the Catholics. Again, see the scans. The letter is about 145 lines long, but we will quote a bit from it: Our Affairs here have not be so; successful as I could wish. We have sold to the amount of about L40,000[pounds] Sterling but have still a large Quantity of Goods on hand, if the Garrison does not stay Sometime here we are Apprehensive we must seek another market. We expect soon to have Directions in that head, I believe one of us must go down to our New Acquisition Pensacola in Florida, it is a fine Country that we have got there tho but poorly inhabited, but Pensacola from its Contiguity to the French at Missisipi& to the Spaniards in the Bay of Mexico(a wealthy populous Coast) it is Generally thought will be the Center of a very Considerable Trade, while the Country round it is Capable of the greatest Cultivation. Secretary of War, more than 154 years ago. Florida had joined the Union barely 10 years before this map was drawn and there's sparse settlement in the state south of Tampa. But the map has wonderful detail of the military roads and forts, Indian trails and villages, territorial boundaries, along with vegetation and topography. It traces the routes of various military expeditions. Such as those by Gen. Eustis, Col. Taylor, Major Childs, and Capt. Wright. The third Seminole War, also called the"Bowlegs War, had just begun when this map was originally issued, and the center of the Florida peninsula was largely ... moreunexplored. The photo above shows the map opened up. It measures 23" x 18" and is lithographed in full printed color. The wooden salt and pepper shakers are in the shape of primitive OUT HOUSES and are brown varnished. The front of the OUT HOUSES have doors hand-drawn in black and the words" MA" and" PA" above the doors. Both shakers have five holes on the top and" Pensacola Fla" stenciled in black. There are metal stoppers on the bottom. The SHAKERS are made of two pieces of wood. The base is one inch square on the bottom. 1¾ inches tall at the front and 1¼ inches at the back.
