Civil War Union New Hampshire State Seal Cuff Button- Dug Cold Harbor, Virginia
Dug in the vicinity of Cold Harbor. Virginia, this is a New Hampshire state seal cuff button. It still retains some of its' original gold gilting, and has a straight shank. I cannot discern the entire backmark, but I can definitely make out"EXTRA" and what I believe to be the beginning of"SCOVILL. Nevertheless, it is definitely a Civil War button. It is a solid little button overall, and displays nicely. Cold Harbor was the site of two fierce battles, one in 1862, and the latter in 1864. This button would make an excellent addition to any collection. RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fvo%7B2d71f%2Bb%3A%60%3E-13e673368cf-0x101-

Here’s a RARE 1874 Letter Signed by Murray on attractive“State of Maine. Adjutant General’s Office, Augusta” Letterhead to Lt. Henry A. Civil War veteran's G.A.R. Grand Army of the Republic Kepi
Here is an original Civil War veteran's G.A.R kepi. This kepi is of the M-1872 low front pattern. It dates from the 1880s to 1890s. It has a stamped brass wreath which is gilt, also with stamped, silvered G.A.R. letters on a strip which are soldered to the back of the wreath. What is unusual about this wreath is that instead of the typical wires or loops, it has a large brass pin for attaching the wreath to the kepi. It may have been specially made or even fabricated by the veteran himself. There are two small G.A.R. side buttons with tin backs. Also a gold bullion, knotted cord or"false" chin strap. This kepi is in surprisingly good condition considering its age, there is some light mothing, though nothing serious and it certainly does not detract from the over all appearance of the kepi. This kepi is clean, not covered with ... moredust, it was well cared for. The tarred leather visor is in excellent condition as is the edge binding. The leather sweat band may be a replacement and or was re-stitched, but this is not uncommon with these old kepis. I've seen it done on many other examples. The wool broad cloth is un-faded and is still a nice blue/black color. The pasteboard stiffener is intact. Also the brown polished cotton liner, there is also brown polished cotton lining sewn on the crown disk. There are no manufacturer's markings on the crown. So this is probably either a privately made kepi or possibly a US Government Army surplus kepi. It is about a US hat size: 6 1/2. Over all this is an excellent example of a Civil War veteran's kepi& will make wonderful addition to your Civil War or G.A.R. collection. Additional kepi information: My Father passed away last year in Harrisburg. Pa. Several boxes of his belongings were stored away at my brother's house in Harrisburg. Recently we finally had the heart to go through them. My Dad, had a small collection of military items, mostly things from his service in WWII,this kepi wrapped in plastic& in a shoe box was among them. I remember

Civil War Union League Philadephia Medal & Ribbon Organized December 27th 1862
GREAT FIND FOR ANY HISTORY BUFF! SHORT 3 DAY AUCTION-DON'T DELAY! You are looking at one vintage piece of Civil War memorabilia with an amazing history. Rare Find" is a term tossed around all the time. But this baby takes the cake. What we have here is an original medal and ribbon from the Civil War era. Medal is inscribed"Union League July 4th 1776 1863 Philadelphia E Pluribus Unum" Opposite side reads"Organized December 27th 1862" A cursory online search regarding this amazingly collectible“Union League” Medal indicates it was Struck at the United States Mint in 1868. It is one of only six(6) struck at the Philadelphia Mint and according to independent sources was only awarded to big shot military and political leaders. Medal condtion looks amazing particularly considering it's significant age and the printing ... moreon both sides is completely legible. Silk ribbon looks great with ordinary wear from aging. But what a stunning display piece this would make. This piece was purchased from a local estate sale with the most interesting provenance we have seen in a long. Long time. Medal comes with a vintage. Cushioned lined box stamped inside- John Wanamaker Philadelphia, New York, Paris, London" Even more interesting. Is the hand written note which documents and Identifies the medal recipient. Note appears to read; Union League of Philadelphia. Pa. medal- belongs to: James Benkard Agnew one of oldest members of Union League at one time a member of the Board of Directors" We are not quite certain about the spelling of Mr. Agnew's middle name. But everything else appears to be accurate. The cursive handwritten note itself is recorded with proper punctuation(a rarity today) In a style that not only appears to be quite old but virtually impossible to reproduce. People just do not write in such a stylized manner anymore. Probably because most of us would not know how. The penmanship on the note takes you way back in time which of course fits appropriately with the age of the meda

PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN Address to the 164th Ohio Regiment August 18. 1864 District of Columbia Washington SOLDIERS:You are about to return to your homes and your friends. After having, as I learn, performed in camp a comparatively short term of ... moreduty in this great contest. I am greatly obliged to you, and to all who have come forward at the call of their country. I wish it might be more generally and universally understood what the country is now engaged in. We have, as all will agree, a free government, where every man has a right to be equal with every other man. In this great struggle, this form of government and every form of human right is endangered if our enemies succeed. There is more involved in this contest than is realized by every one. There is involved in this struggle, the question whether your children and my children shall enjoy the privileges we have enjoyed. I say this, in order to impress upon you, if you are not already so impressed, that no small matter should divert us from our great purpose. There may be some inequalities in the practical application of our system. It is fair that each man shall pay taxes in exact proportion to the value of his property; but if we should wait. Before collecting a tax, to adjust the taxes upon each man in exact proportion with every other man, we should never collect any tax at all. There may be mistakes made sometimes; and things may be done wrong, while the offic

Mini Civil War Era GAR Grand Army of the Republic, CW Veteran's Membership Medal
A Nice. Original and Decent Example of a Civil War Era GAR, Mini Grand Army of the Republic, CW Veteran's Membership Medal! The small, 2 piece GAR Membership Medal is 1-1/4" in overall size, fitted with a pin backed Top Bar for wear. The Medal is enameled in Red and Blue, and appears to be a Gold Washed piece over bronze, although the front enameling is clean! There is a repair of the right star point with the loop and the T-Bar pin is missing the pin, but the enameling is sharp and the small medal looks very nice in hand! The medal is actually a decent piece and would go beautifully with a Civil War Veteran's Medal Grouping, uniform or for general display. The patina on the medal are wonderful! 1863 Indian Head cent with the "J. M. GOWDEY" counterstamp. A Civil War piece?
Listed in the main section of the Brunk reference as one of three coins with this imprint.the"J. M. GOWDEY" counterstamp. Here on a nice 1863 Indian Head cent. There is no good information written so far about the issuer of this counterstamp. Possibly it is a Civil War piece since there is record of Josiah M. Gowdey of Charleston. ME who mustered January 5, 1864. He was wounded June 18, 1864 fighting for the First Maine Heavy Artillery, Company G. He mustered out September 11, 1865 and then resided at Lincoln, ME. The First Maine Heavy Artillery was organized into the United States service August 21. 1862 and eventually numbered 2,200 men. Of these, 1,428 were either killed, wounded, died from disease or were captured during the war. The Brunk listing for this fine counterstamp is G-425 on page 176. It is worth additional research ... moreto confirm or deny the above attribution! Offered with no reserve. I will gladly combine multiple purchases so you only pay once for shipping. Antique Civil War Confederate? Snare Drum
Up for bid is this wonderful Civil War era. Possibly Confederate Snare Drum. It measures 15 7/8" in diameter and 11 1/4" in height. It is painted in Confederate grey, with some paint missing here and there. It is in relatively good condition, but the rope has broken in one place. All the leather trim is there. Snare is in place and the drum heads look to be in good condition. Did not find any marks, though there is some writing on the top drum head, but not enough to make out, or make a difference in my opinion. I think that the metal is bronze, but it could be brass. It has a nice patina on it and I did not clean it. There is a spot where it is brighter above the three sound holes. Rope looks to be made of hemp. Howdy y'al. So. I took a second, third, and fourth look through all the air holes on the drum to look inside for ... moreany kind of mark or label on the drum. I did not find any label or marks of any kind. The inside of the drum is very clean, I am happy to report. Thanks for your questions and keep them coming. Decomatic If you have any questions. Please ask before auctions end. The only method of payment accepted is PayPal. PayPal payments must be received within five days of auction's end. Failure to pay will result in notification to E-Bay as well as negative feedback. Family medical cures, instructions for the care of horses and other livestock, and household how-to information, compiled over a 30-year period by Mr. John Marquart of Lebanon, Pennsylvania. The book was intended for the use of farmers, homesteaders and housewives, in the hopes that it would make their lives a little bit easier. It’s a book that invites experimentation. Who could read this book and not be tempted to try some of its unique recipes and formulas in their own kitchen? How can you help but wonder if maybe our ancestors. Who were far more dependent on their horses and livestock than we are today, knew better ways of caring for them in sickness and health? The same goes for family medicine– there weren’t always doctors available. In many instances, folks had to fend for themselves, using books just like this. Maybe they knew something we don’t? Home brewers will also take a shine to this book. It contai

1865 civil war letter from wife to Acting Master William McKendry -- Canton MA
1865 civil war letter from wife to Acting Master William McKendry- Canton MA Description Amazing 6 page original letter from a woman in Canton MA to her husband aboard the USS New Hampshire. 1865. Rare and extraordinarily emotional letter with Civil War content. Written by Caroline T. McKendry. March 18, 1865 to"Acting Master" William McKendry Jr while at Port Royal, South Carolina. Very interesting content concerning the heartbreak of Caroline. As she discovers her husband will not be arriving home on furlough. Caroline(or"Caddie" is very upset, and angry at the same time. She goes into great details about her feelings for her husband, how she was anticipating his homecoming. Also describes how their son"Willie" was excited, and how upset he his about the change in plans. It appears she has even invited her ... moreparents to their home for the reunion. She mentions them in the letter as being at the house. Turns out Caroline just found out from his letters that William will not be arriving. Caroline goes into great detail about her dislike that William is in the Navy. She wants William to resign as soon as possible and even threatens in a roundabout way to leave him if he does not return home permanently. You can really feel the pain that Caroline is suffering and how much she misses her husband. She signs at the end with her nickname of"Caddie. Her writing is very well done. Definitely from an educated woman. As it turns out, she was actually a well known professional writer of fiction! I have done alot of research on this family. So please take a look at all of the images I have uploaded. William was born in Canton MA in 1825 and died in 1876. Sadly only 11 years after this letter was written, at the age of 51. Please see the long obit with great details of his life) The McKendry family was very well known in Canton MA for many years. He married Caroline Tucker in 1850 and had one son"William" in 1859. According to the 1860 census. William was listed as a"Sea Captain&

Civil War Genuine New/Unused Sheet of 16 Confederate 10-Cent Stamps (Inv. #4299)
Beautiful. Mint condition unused sheet of 16 Confederate stamps. These are genuine, the sheet as you see it, and they're 10-cent stamps in this sheet of four across and four down. If you see any lines that might look like cuts, the stamps are enclosed in multiple sheets of cello that overlap, so on my computer I can see what looks like a slit above the bottom row is where the sheet is inside another sleeve providing extra protection but forming a line that isn't really there. We're offering this outstanding sheet at an opening bid of only $199 and a buy it now of $222(ppd/insured) it's very tough to find large/partial-full sheets of Confederate stamps and the many we've seen of late on ebay tend to be at least $200 for 8. 10 or rarely 12. We would expect to find this opening at $250 or more. WE ALSO HAVE A SHEET OF 28 ... moreAVAILABLE BUT NOT YET LISTED FOR $344; Obviously. That's a great buy on a very tough to find sheet. Please let us know if interested. Postpaid and insured to the winning bidder(within the US only)
