Civil War History Military Orders Letter· Paper and ink are in pristine condition…very legible. Except for the extreme cursive, which distorts just a few. Dated Dec. 28 th 1864· By order of the infamous Maj. Gen. W.T. Sherman· Also by order of L.M. Dayton. Who eventually became a captain in the union army. The last name on the order appears to be that of an aide. But hard to make out. Upper left hand corner of paper is embossed with“Congress” There are some red“x” and lines under the names of Private Henry D. Garrett. Who was detailed for duty, as well as Capt. L.H. Roots, who was the officer to whom Private Garrett was ordered to report. Not sure when or why the red lines and“x” were added. Otherwise. In excellent condition. From what I can determine. Civil War. Wolcott#1796, WASHINGTON, D.C. OCT 5 1864? Franked E B French An unusual franked patriotic cover(Wolcott style#1796) By Ezra B. French, a Maine Congressional Representive until March 1861. A review of the members of the 36th& 37th Congress show his name is the only possibility. His term ostensibly ended in March of 1861, before the firing on Ft. Sumpter. Likely well before this cover made its way through the mail after OCT 5th, 1861 or 4? Unfortunately the the final number of the year is difficult to read in the post mark. I had similiarly named and addressed covers with postage due. officer signed letters) and stamped letters; so no doubt the franking was not questioned and the mail delivered. Civil War Letter Captain George H. Green, 29th N.J. October 22, 1863
Very interesting soldier's letter from Captain George H. Green. 29th New Jersey to I assume his wife Mary. October 22, 1863 from Washington City, 3 big 8x0 pag es; says his health is improving. Doctor tended him twice a day, so much better went to barber's today and got sheared, doc says I must not go to camp for two weeks, Cornelius will leaving nothing undone, men like and respect him, they are hard at work on fortifications and drill is suspended, make us work instead of fight, talks in some detail about a boy(negro undoubtedly) who tended to him every day, when I come home, he will come with me, more on children being used by this officer, his name is Wm. Casey, mentions three soldiers, Bosden MOrris, Dwwit Newing, and Britten Wolley(all with the 29th New Jersey) another one James Maps is with the 1st New Jersey Cavalry, mentions ... morealso John B. Wolcott of the 29th New Jersey who died of disease at Tennallytown Maryland; mentions Con Monford but unable to find listing for him, kind of a humerous quip at end about the Old Maid, have they sent her to the asylum or does she still run at large. Excellent letter, a few tears on edges, have unfolded places where paper folded over, needs a bit of loving care, some wrinkles but overall in fine condition in bold ink. George H. Green Residence was not listed; Enlisted on 9/6/1862 as a Captain. On 9/20/1862 he was commissioned into"A" Co. Double caped duster Old West, Civil War,
History. The“Duster” was a full length coatdesigned to protect a travelers clothing from dust. A popular itemwith cattlemen on cow drives. The duster was also used by anyonetraveling on horseback along the early trails and dirt roads of theAmerican West. Such coats were slit up to the wearers back toaccommodate the horse, and sometimes incorporated large pockets androll down cuffs. Falling or standing collars were seen as well. Earlydusters, inspired by clothing used by coach drivers, sometimes hadone or more capes to protect the shoulders and back from rain. Later, dusters were used in the early 20 th Century by many crosscountry motorists for the same reasons 19 th Centuryhorsemen found the coat useful. Dusters were made in linen. Cotton, and sometimes leather, and many were made water proof with theaddition of paints, tars or oils. Although ... moredusters could be(andwere) made in a large variety of colors, natural undyed fabrics werepopular. Dusters in white, tans, browns and light grays were popularduring the later half of the 19 th Century. Most fastenedwith buttons. However snaps and zippers began to be used in the 20 th Century. Today the duster is one of many styles of long coatspopularized by movies and made with such luxuries as satin or quiltedlinings. Cell phone pockets and fur trim. However, many moderncattlemen(and women) still wear dusters for their original purpose, keeping their clothes dust free while working cattle. This Duster. First of all. This duster is used. Wellused. I made it for my dad some 10 years ago back when he was stilldoing 1880 town shoot'em ups! However, with the South Dakota summershitting 90 plus on some weekends, this item was worn only forspecific shows, and was not as“used” as his vests and shirts. The duster has been washed and dried in a modern dryer however, andsurvived! The cut of this duster is early instyle. And resembles the cut of the winter great coats and coach manscoats used in the 1850s and 60s. It has a smallish standing collar, two capes, and smallish slit pocket
