US Civil War Naval USN Officers Sword w/Scabbard - Made in Germany
US Civil War Naval USN Officers Sword w/Scabbard- Made In Germany This Original Civil War Sword comes from an estate. The sword shows some rust and wear from age and handling. Great Patina. The blade is straight and the brass guard is tight. The Leather Scabbard is broken in two pieces. The brass piece in the middle and the tip is stamped with the number 3. Just above the brass screw. It also has some light pitting on the brass tip as well. The blade has an etched patriotic design on both sides. One side by the guard is etched CHRS. C. JACOBS& CO. BROOKLYN. NY. The other side is stamped GERMANY. But I do not see a manufactures hallmark. The blade measures approx. 30" long from the hand guard to the tip. The width of the blade is 3/4" The overall length is 35 1/2" This piece would be an excellent addition to a collection. ... morePlease email me if you have any questions. Thank you for your interest.

1863 UNION CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS LETTER - 21st MISSOURI INFANTRY REGIMENT
Very interesting 4 pp. letter dated Clinton. Kentucky, Mar 11 1863, from Corporal William E. Demoney, Company"B, 21st Missouri Infantry Regiment, to friend, John H. Donaldson, Greenwich Station, Huron County, Ohio, with original postal cover franked with contemporary US 3c Washington postage stamp, Columbus KY, Mar 14 1863 postmark. The content reads. In part, Your letter found me well and hearty. I was waiting for pay. Which came at least, but not as much as I expected, consequently I shall not be able to send you as much as I had calculated. I only received two month's' pay. I was expecting four, so you see I shall be obliged to disappoint you, but it is a disappointment to me as it is to you. If I had received as much as I expected to, I should[have] sent you sixty dollars, but. I will only send you thirty five dollars, and ... moreI am obliged to send it in a letter as there is no express office here. if you get it, I should like to have you send me an answer immediately. You can endorse. the note that you hold against father and send him a receipt. You wanted to help me in the payment of that note, if I could, I will aid all I can. I will send you more perhaps the next time I receive pay. There is four months' pay due me yet, but how soon I get it is more than I can tell. I saw Levi Christmas day at Columbus, Kentucky. He went through Union City while we were there, but as I was on duty the day he went through, I did not see him, nor have not heard from him since. I shall be very glad to accept your invitation when I get through soldiering, if I am alive, which I hope, and trust I may. We are now stationed about twelve miles from Columbus at an outpost for Columbus. The weather is fine today. We have had a great sight of rain down here. It has rained almost very day for the last two months, consequently the mud is awful deep. We have had snow to the depth of 15 inches down here this winter. signed] William Demoney. CIVIL WAR ERA POSTAL COVER ADD. TO US GUNBOAT NO 7 (USS NEW ERA) CAIRO, ILLINOIS
Very interesting Civil War era postal cover(letter content no longer present) franked with contemporary US 3c Washington postage stamp bearing manauscript postmark. Addressed to"P. M. S. Passed Midshipman) or M. O" Medical Officer) U. S. Gunboat No. 7, Cairo, Illinois. Cairo. Illinois, located on the Mississippi River was the location of a large U.S. Navy facility during the Civil War. U.S. Gunboat No. 7 was named formally USS NEW ERA, a 157 ton stern wheel steamer which was acquired by the Union Navy at Cincinnati, Ohio in 1862. She had been newly built that year to operate on the Ohio River out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. NEW ERA arrived off Columbus, Kentucky on Dec 24 1862 to support the Union Army garrison there, which was threatened by a substantial Confederate force. Rebel occupation of the town would have seriously disrupted ... morethe flow of supplies to the Union Mississippi River fleet and troops then operating against Vicksburg, Mississippi. When the threat subsided, she returned to her base at Cairo IL. On Jan 3 1863 NEW ERA headed down stream again, and the following day, accompanied by ten other Union gunboats, she got underway up the White River in Arkansas accompanying Union Army troops under General William Tecumseh Sherman to capture Ford Hindman. On Jan 11 1863, Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter ordered NEW ERA to take on board, from BARON DEKALB and CINCINNATI, men wounded during the expedition to a hospital ship at the mouth of the White River; then proceed to Island No. 10, Mississippi to relieve CARONDELET. NEW ERA was next stationed near Island No. 10 inspecting civilian river boats out of St. Louis, Missouri, and other Northern ports to prevent illegal trade with the rebels. She captured the steamer W. A. KNAPP carrying a contraband cargo on Feb 4 1863 and took the steamers ROWENA and WHTIE CLOUD under similar circumstances on Feb 13 1863. Then, CUREW was taken as a prize on Feb 28 1863. On Mar 12 1863, NEW ERA captured the steamer RUTH carrying contraband and Confederate States mail.
