Charts, graphs, text, history, and some nice lithograph pictures. The hardbound book is 14" x 11-7/8" in size with 200 numbered pages. I found many of the maps showed original states. Countries, and regions that have long since changed. Most are in tinted color. Ever the US had one Dakota region& Indian Territory where Oklahoma is now. I was surprised at how much Africa and Russia has changed. Africa was about 1/2 unsettled lands and Russia was divided into over 30 separate regions/ states' Besides the maps. The material placed around the top may need to be glued again at the seam soon and there is a very tiny bit of glue showing just at the seam. There is a tiny amount of discoloration of the inside lining at the top and one place on the inside lining farther down which could be a glue stain. The fabric around the top was not put in place evenly and shows just a bit of the lining along part of the top. This could probably be fixed by anyone with a little craft know how. Large Folio Antique 1893 Bacon Atlas Map of PALESTINE
A fine original 19th century antique map from G.W. Bacon. This listing: Palestine Provenance Commercial and Library Atlas of the World. Containing one hundred inset maps. Including all the latest discoveries, Extensive letterpress descriptions, Alphabetical index, Populations from the latest censuses, Gazetteer of 2,000 principal towns, Statistical diagrams and tables, etc. Edited by G.W. Bacon. F.R.G.S. Publisher London: G.W. Bacon& Co. Limited, 127 Strand. 1893. The maps for sale here are all at least 115 years old. I removed them from the damaged atlas myself. Size/ Format In millimeters(and inches) Sheet: 540 x 345(21 x 13½) Map: 480 X 300(18¾ x 11¾) These maps were all'tipped in' to the atlas. Meaning that they could be removed as a single intact sheet. There is a fold in the centre of each map. The maps are ... morelithographs on heavy paper. The colors and still bright and fresh. The margins are generous. Condition The overall condition of the maps is very good/ excellent. There is the occasional spot in the margins of a few of the maps. And the occasional minor tear(always completely confined to the margins) has been professionally repaired. The photos included in the listings are of the actual maps you will receive, Remarks This atlas is relatively scarce. I was only able to find three rather pricey examples available online. A fourth is in the custody of the UK National Archives. Many of the maps that appeared in this atlas were originally published by Bacon in the 1860s as the highly sought after Weekly Dispatch series of maps. These maps are unusually rectangular with a length to width ratio of 1: 1.56. Which was, and is, unusual. The double maps are somewhat longer or'taller' than usual when vertical, and somewhat longer'wider' than usual when horizontal. This Commercial and Library Atlas offers a refreshing change from Bartholomew's widely adopted treatment of the world's geography with pleasant surprises like Tasmania occupying a full double page map. This is a double page from the Long's Classical Atlas published in 1856. Here are page 24 and 25. With page 24 having a map of Egypt showing the Nile delta and the Sinai peninsula. Page 25 shows the larger Germany(Germania Magna) This map was taken out of a damaged copy of the Long's Classical Atlas(see tha last three photos) which is not part of this sale.
