Comprising the entire North-West Section from the Original Plats of Squares& Subdivisions and Additions upon record in the office of the Surveyor of the City of Washington" Constructed under the direction of and published in 1892 by Griffith M. Hopkins, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Maps this early and showing this much detail of Washington D.C. are VERY SCARCE. The map has fantastic coloring to it. Lots of color coding to represent various attributes(white/stone building. Pink/brick building, yellow/frame building, if it looks like an envelope/a stable or shed, and black& white dotted/green house etc. Map in generally good condition(not perfect but pretty nice condition) Some browning and small chips or creases at edges. Map is blank on the reverse side. There is a crease up the middle where it was originally bound. The map has some small tears and chips around the edges. A brown square stain can be found in the middle of the right edge and the middle of the left edge of the map. Caused by the original binding. There are some black scuff marks along the left edge. There are a few pencil marks left by a previous owner. There are some creases in the paper, but they do not affect the map, as well as some other stains here and there. These two books and pencil box provides an unique look back into an era of art and education. The two tier Eagle Company pencil box is definitely used. But has great character. One can almost picture the child sitting at a desk in a one room school house writing and drawing to pass their boredom. It is not in excellent shape. Their is writing on it and coloring, just like most children do to their pencil boxes. There is a small crack in the middle divider on the bottom their. A former owner which we believe to be the original owner had his name stamp and put it on the first inner page and last inner page of the great majority of the books. Some of the covers are a little curled on the edges and occasionally they will have a small piece missing. All the books are complete and readable. From the Original Text: Carefully Collated and Compared with the Editions of Halliwell, Knight and Collier: with Historical and Critical Introductions, and Notes to Each Play and A Life of the Great Dramatist by Charles Knight. It features all of Shakespeare's work and is illustrated with finely executed steel engravings of celebrated American actors in character. The engravings are in wonderful shape. Books are in good condition for their age. They measure 7 1/2' x 10 1/2' inches and each volume varies in page length. The total page count is 1724 pages. The covers do have minor wear and marking on them. But they are in good shape. Antique Bolivian Aymara Wool Poncho w/ Collector's Books
Up for auction is a large( 48" x 62" 122 x 157 cm. antique wool Poncho from Caiza. Dept. of Potosi) in Bolivia. A stunning example of traditional South American weaving, at its finest. Museum worthy. Wonderful colour palette. A mix of vegetal and aniline dyes that dates to the late 19th very early 20th century. I collect all manner of traditional ethnic textiles(mostly Central Asian) but was struck when I first saw this piece by the fineness of the weaving. The great soft intact fringe and the fact that it was clearly an'authentic' as opposed to a tourist) piece. Have shown it to scholars who specialize in Aymara textiles such as this and they confirm my early observations. Because this is a collector's piece I am also including in this offering 3 items that will serve to support how culturally significant this beautiful ... moreponcho is. 1) A copy of'National Geographic' from February 1927 that includes a beautifully photographed article on the tribal peoples of the Bolivian and Peruvian Andes. In excellent condition. No missing pages. Foxing, pen marks etc. Fascinating reading! 2) A vintage edition from 1937 of William H. Prescott's seminal work'The Conquest of Peru' first published in 1847. Book is in good condition. no missing pages or foxing. Slight yellowing to the pages and stamped'Royal Naval War Libraries' on inside front cover. This work is a classic. Prescott was an American historian and Hispanist(died 1859) who was probably the most eminent American historian of the 19th century. Also notable for his amazing memory and the fact that he could barely see yet wrote many major works on Spanish and Meso-American empires. Antique Beatrix Pottery Books
These book are not in great condition but they are not falling apart either. Someone has scribbled on the back page of the larger one and it has a tear on the inside first page. The cardboard spine and some of the front picture is missing on the smaller one(The Tale of Two Bad Mice) but that it the worst of it. The inside of the larger one(The Roly Poly Pudding) is inscribed with the date May 22 1917 and the book measures 16cm x 20cm. The smaller book measures 10cm x 14cm. These are three original Met Life premium receipt books. They are from the same person. And are dated 1911-12, 1913, and 1916. Looks like their premiums were paid in person weekly, and recorded, in pencil, inside these books. The premiums range from 10 cents to 20 cents. The booklets are worn, but they were all filled in by the same handwriting. Little warnings in them not to pay premiums to strangers, and not to insure children beyond what New York law restricted. Shown in the last three photos is from the November 14. 2013 auction of Kestenbaum& Company where the leather bound version sold for $1,230 against a $500- $700 estimate($1,000 hammer price + 23% buyer premium. This does not include New York sales tax) I am offering two examples of this miniature book that measures 2 inches high. 1.5 inches wide, dating from circa 1910. One has leather covers, the other has paper covers. Interestingly, the Kestenbaum example says it was printed in the city of Leipzig. On my paper-bound example, it states it was printed in Germany.
