An Unusual Antique Art Deco Box in form of 3 Books and Bookends-c1920s-Inlaid.
This unusual Antique Art Deco Box in the form of Three Books and a Pair of Bookends dates I believe to around the 1920s or thereabouts. The Box is inlaid and appears to have been made from more than one type of wood. But as I am no expert I won't even try to guess what types these are! The Box stands approximately 3.75 inches high and measures approximately 5 inches across the base. Although the width of the Box itself is only around 4 inches. The depth of the Box is approximately 3.25 inches. The lid of the Box still retains its original hinges and although fully functional have a little bit of"play" to them. The Box lid is a little off-centre I presume due to the hinges or warping and there seems to be some gaps where the lid does not sit as snugly as it should. There are some imperfections to the venner of the wood-both inside ... moreand out-some lifting/scuffs/scratches etc. But I think that these can be forgiven due to its unusual and possibly unique appearance. The Box would be suitable for a whole variety of purposes-Jewellery. Sewing collectables, Stationery etc, and weighs approximately 173 grams.

There is alot of sheet music in the bottom of the box, and the other pamphlets shown, including a book of music in another language, maybe German. The autoharp needs a little TLC, I showed where it needs to be pushed back together, the nails are there but I will let you put it back together. I don't see any splits or cracks in the wood, but look at the pictures and feel free to ask for other views if you want them. There are alot of tools and accessories, as shown in the pictures. The original box is pretty beat up, has been taped, but is the original nonetheless! I purchased these two old school books at an auction in Ohio. They are both Civil War Era Books. One is Harvey's English Grammar. A Practical Grammar Of The English Language For The Use Of Schools Of Every Grade" by Thos. W. Harvey, A.M. It has a copyright date of 1868 by Wilson, Hinkle& Co. It was published by Wilson, Hinkle& Co. Cincinnati. The other book is"First Lessons In Composition, Grammar Embracing Full Directions On The Subject Of Punctuation" by G.P. Quackenbos, A.M. It has a copyright date of 1855 by G.P. Quackenbos. It was published by D. Appleton& Co. New York. Both of these books measure about 7 1/2 inches tall by 5 inches wide. These books are original and are 150 year old so they do show wear. They are hardcovers with leather spines. Both of these books are complete. The covers are solid but ... moreworn. The bindings are tight and I do not see any loose or missing pages. The pages are clean and flexible with a few stains and foxing here and there. The pages turn easily.These books are tight and easy to look through without fear of damage. These are nice period items that would look good on display. You will receive both books. Very interesting large lot of New York City Police Department artifacts. Large antique document box measuring 18 inches wide. 13 inches deep and 8.5 inches tall. Stenciled on the front is Committee on the Police Problem. The box is unlocked and we do not have the key. It has wear expected with age but generally has great patina. It has an old label on the upper left top which appears to be for storage. Please see pictures. Inside are 3 books. Report on the Police Department of The City of New York for the year ending December 31. 1902, paperback. Front cover is loose, back cover is missing. Pages have slight yellowing. Committee on Police Problem. A large ledger containing at least over 50 newspaper clipping dating mostly from 1905. They are attached to sheets stamped N.Y. Graphics on the front and back are very crisp and legible.Patina on the box is great and there is even a knothole on one end of the box Don't know if it was built with the knothole. Or if the knot fell out from wood shrinkage and drying. Sometime in the boxes life wallpaper, or some patterned paper material has been added to the bottom outside of the box. I chose to leave it this way, in original found condition, but the paper could be easily removed. Box measures 23 1/4" w x 11 1/2" d x 8" h and weighs 5 lb.
