It is undated but from the late 1800's, this was found with a bunch of maps from Bacon's 1880's map book(which i have also listed) you are considering one map. The map shown, the paper is aprox 18 by 27 inches, with the printed map a bit smaller(as you can see in the pics) i do not have all the maps from this book, only a few, the scale of this is 4 inch to the mile. the paper is thin, and shows some edge wear, zoom in on the pics for good detail. Antique 12 Japanese Handwritten Buddhism Pilgrimage Books A Set Shuincho
This is a set of 12 books including Shuincho. And books related to pilgrimages dated in the Edo(one book has a date Bunkyu Gannen,1861) and rest are from Meiji( late 1800s to early 1900s) Shuincho is from Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage( Saikoku Sanjusansho junrei) which covers 33 temples dedicated to Kannon in Western Japan and is the most famous of Japanese pilgrimages. Shuincho is a book used by Japanese Buddhist pilgrims which bears the stamps obtained from priests at temples visited on a prescribed pilgrimage route. Each temple gives a stamp or two or three. And in certain cases the monk will write the name of the temple and the date, etc. In this case, the kanji or calligraphy is stamped on each of the pages, not hand written, and the stamps are all hand applied using cinnabar ink. The smallest book has complete 33 visits, also there are ... morebooks of visit to Awaji, Isejingu, Ise shrine, Tajima,Tokyo, Kyoto which have records of spending expenses. The other, although all the music appears very readable has a loose cover with some tears but is still attached and some pages are turned at the outside edge. 2 Antique Japanese Buddhist Sutra Books Wood Block Woodblock Print
These are two Japanese Buddhist sutra books. We don't know how old they are. Buddhist sutras don't usually list their publishing date. Buddhas words are timeless) They are printed on hand made Japanese washi paper. This is a handmade paper made from mulberry pulp. Commonly called"Rice paper" it's a wonderful paper that doesn't get brittle through age. It just gets softer. Like old cloth. A part of one of the books covers has come loose(The part over the binding. See the first photo) but the threaded bindings are still tight on both books and in good condition(see the last photo) Often Buddhist sutras will have the shiny stone called"mica" ground up and added to the paper while it's being made. The end result is the mica in the paper reflects light. These books have a lot of reflection in them. So we ... morehad to tone down the light for photographing. You can still see the sheen in the paper though. The printing itself is done through woodblock printing. Each page was written by hand by some calligraphy artist with beautiful writing. These written pages were then laboriously copied and carved out on thin blocks of cherry wood. Backwards. These woodblocks could then be used to produce multiple copies of the printing. This was how printing was done in Japan up to the late 1800's. After that the Japanese incorporated the Gutenberg idea of movable type. When these scrolls were read. A Buddhist priest would be sitting on a cushion inside the temple. He would be reading this scroll on a small stand in front of him and reading it out loud in a chanting rhythmic fashion. Also it includes a short history about each shipping line included with details about each clipper ship featured. TWO CHARMING ANTIQUE SPELLING BOOKS, ELEMENTARY, CIRCA 1857
Here are two very attractive(to antiquers) little spelling books. Poor condition basically but with the kind of look that makes them a charming design accent in any living room or office. The two books are each 4 inches by 6 1/2" And about 1/2 inch thick. They are intended to be used in schools by children and they obviously were. I have had them on my living room front table for many years. Just lying there with a marble apple and a pair of antique metal rimmed glasses. They were noticed and oohed over by everyone who entered the room. The first book. With the darker blue cover, second photo, clearly says The National Standard, Elementary SPELLING BOOK, AMERICAN SPELLING BOOK, BY NOAH WEBSTER, LLD. There is more on the cover. But hard for me to read with my 80 year old eyes. The next two photos are of the inside of the book. Showing ... moresome damage and also a pair of good pages. The next photo is from a similar book. Same size and age, which probably says the same thing except it is faded to the point where all I can read is SPELLING. The frontispiece is missing on each book. But I found the date 1857 in one of them. The first one is fair to poor. The second one is poor to really bad. But the essence of the age and idea makes them have great decorator value.
