I remember my mother using one exactly like this when she made spaghetti and had to grind up all the meat and vegetables. The grinder mounts on a table. The handle still operates easily. There are the typical signs of age and usage. From the bottom of the screw to the top. It is approximately 12 inches tall. The cast iron handle has a wooden knob on the end. And the handle is 11 inches long. The wooden knob is in very good condition. No cracks no breaks. There is a lot of embossed printing on this grinder. On one side near the top. It reads PAT. From America's Industrial Age. This is a late 1890's antique food chopper. A Universal#3. Manufactured by L. F. C. in New Britain, Conn. Shows the maker's marks and 1890's patent dates prominently. All moving parts work perfectly and easily. There are(2) changeable round bits. No paint. Just gorgeous, gun metal gray cast iron, with the worn patina you like to see. It has use-wear. Pitting, and some rust blemish, but remains a nice display, despite over 100 years of use. The bench. Or table clamp, opens up to about 2" With the clamp open, the chopper is 13" tall. It has a cast iron handle. With a wooden knob 3 1/2" long. The open receptical is 4" x 5" It is said. This antique meat grinder is in amazing antique-y condition. It comes with two detachable blades. I believe it probably works still. Although. I have not tested it. This cast iron piece clamps onto a counter top with a c-clamp that works just fine. The wooden tipped hand-crank works smoothly as well. This grinder/chopper measures 11" long at its longest point. Note please that the handle has the 4 letter abr for the state of Connecticut. That changed to CT in 1963. Landers. Frary& Clark traces its start to the time George Landers, age sixteen, arrived in New Britain, Connecticut in 1829 looking for a job. He soon went to work for Josiah Dewey who, seven years earlier, had started a small foundry making cupboard latches and other hardware. After Dewey's death, it became Landers& Smith Manufacturing Company in 1853. In 1862 the small but prosperous company made another of the many acquisitions that were to mark its history and growth in future years. It acquired the firm of Frary, Clark& Company, of Meriden Connecticut, the company name changed to Landers, Frary& Clark, which it retained for the next full century of its existence(1962) The company and the extent of its line continued ... moreto grow. It added meat choppers and sausage stuffers, screw eyes and strap hooks, door handles and floor scrapers, molasses gates and faucets, meat hooks and harness hooks, cast iron match boxes and curry combs, fancy brass hat hooks and eyes with porcelain knob ends-and even toys. In the 1890s the trade name"Universal" was adopted for the company's products. And it was in the same period that it introduced a series of quite revolutionary household products that were to help establish it as a leader in the housewares field. The second product to become a household necessity was the"Universal" food chopper. Choppers were not new. But this one ground not merely meats but vegetables as well.Odds and ends could be turned into hashes and casseroles with ease.The identical model food chopper was first produced in 1897 and was still being produced in 1958.
