Old Antique 1900 Patent Universal No. 1, Food Chopper, Meat Grinder, Cast Iron
Here's an old or antique Universal No. 1"Food Chopper" or meat grinder kitchen tool we received recently with some older kitchen items. This one has many raised markings on the cast iron pieces and seems to have had patents in the late 1800's with one noted as 1900. So this is probably from the very early 1900's. The cutoff piece is reversible and has a multitooth side and a three tooth side. The wood handle is in nice shape with slight signs of use and age as one might expect. My guess is this had been in use for making hash or other ground meat and vegetable type meals up until recently. It is relatively clean though a little fine cleaning could be done. Other markings indicate"L F& C" of New Britain. CT, USA. To lend a little scale to the photos the grinder stands about 8 inches tall from the bottom ... moreof the frame to the top of the frame. The opening is about 3 inches by 2.5 inches. Nice old or antique kitchen tool, seems suited for continued use. That's about it. PA, AS IT PERTAINS TO COLLECTORS OF CAST IRON COOKWARE In 1865. Two Erie families associated by marriage, joined in a modest venture to manufacture door hinges. The Selden and Griswold union paved the way for The Griswold Manufacturing Company of Erie, Pennsylvania, recognized world wide as producers of fine cast iron products, especially cookware. Between 1865 and 1957 when they closed production of the plant at the corner of 12 th and Raspberry Street. Their line of cookware had been sold and used around the world. Their designers and engineers produced many patents spanning almost 100 years of manufacture. Before the turn of the 20 th century. They added cast aluminum products to their ... moreline. In the 1920's they enameled some cookware and by the 1930's they offered electric items to their product list. They produced commercial pieces for use in restaurants. The company was in trouble by the 1940's for a variety of reasons. Many products were being introduced by other cookware companies that seemed more attractive to modern cooks. Problems within the company between management and employees widened. The quality of the products seemed to decline, and in 1957 the doors of GMC closed leaving 60+ employees without jobs. While most of the GMC cookware is a desired collectible. Almost all collectors avoid the small Griswold logo era. The former quality and casting isn't there, for the most part. The small emblem items are good for users of cast iron because they don't have the price tag of the collectibles and are great for function. Antique/Vintage metal (cast iron) meat grinder Economy No.1
This meat grinder was found along with many other items from a home built in 1950. The imprint on the side reads Economy No. 1. Then along the handle it reads PAT'D MCH 22.04. I've done extensive research and plan on going to an antique dealer for more information about this unique piece. At this time I have little information- there are several No. 10 Economy Meat Grinders. But no No. 1's. There is an extra grinder plate and overall it is in good condition. Knowing the history of this house. Owned by the Sohn's in the 50's, and understanding that the items found here were purchased during that time, and after hours of reading and internet searching) leads me to believe that No. 1 may be the first model. It appears to have brass plating because there is still a lot of brass visible as shown in photos. Just clamp it onto a kitchen counter.
