VINTAGE 1937-1957 GRISWOLD CAST IRON MEAT GRINDER(3 3/16" X 7 5/8" X 9 1/4" A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE GRISWOLD MANUFACTURING COMPANY OF ERIE. PA, AS IT PERTAINS TO COLLECTORS OF CAST IRON COOKWARE In 1865. Two Erie families associated by marriage, joined in a modest venture to manufacture door hinges. The Selden and Griswold union paved the way for The Griswold Manufacturing Company of Erie, Pennsylvania, recognized world wide as producers of fine cast iron products, especially cookware. Between 1865 and 1957 when they closed production of the plant at the corner of 12 th and Raspberry Street. Their line of cookware had been sold and used around the world. Their designers and engineers produced many patents spanning almost 100 years of manufacture. Before the turn of the 20 th century. They added cast aluminum products to their ... moreline. In the 1920's they enameled some cookware and by the 1930's they offered electric items to their product list. They produced commercial pieces for use in restaurants. The company was in trouble by the 1940's for a variety of reasons. Many products were being introduced by other cookware companies that seemed more attractive to modern cooks. Problems within the company between management and employees widened. The quality of the products seemed to decline, and in 1957 the doors of GMC closed leaving 60+ employees without jobs. While most of the GMC cookware is a desired collectible. Almost all collectors avoid the small Griswold logo era. The former quality and casting isn't there, for the most part. The small emblem items are good for users of cast iron because they don't have the price tag of the collectibles and are great for function. There seems to be a much larger demand for cast iron, compared to those seeking cast aluminum, enameled, electric, or plated pieces. 3 Vintage Food Choppers Griswold #2 Keystone 20 Aluma by J.K. Sebo Brooklyn NY
3 Vintage Food Choppers Made in the USA. Includes the following: 1) Keystone" 20" cast iron chopper marked as made by"C.I. Co. Boyertown. PA" the C.I. appearing to stand for Colebrookdale Iron, a company originally engaged in the manufacture of sad irons and trivets, with history as far back as the early 1700s. Early 20th century advertising copy confirms this. Founded by Thomas Rutter and Thomas Potts, C.I. made its food grinders from the 1920's into the 1940's. This chopper is marked in raised letters"Keystone" and"20" on one side and"C.I. Co. Boyertown, PA" on the other. It is also marked"Made in USA" along the clamp stem. It comes with 5 extruder plates(one of which is solid, intended to help chop the meat before switching to a true extruder plate) This chopper's ... moreblades are a fixed part of the body, rather than separate, an unusual design. Essentially, food chopping became a two step process. The solid plate with solid"blades" was attached, the food chopped by the internal"body" blades and solid plate, then the solid plate was switched to one of the other plates for extrusion. Hardwood handle. 2) Aluma chopper made by J.K. Sebo of Brooklyn New York. J.K. Sebo went bankrupt in 1941. So that this chopper dates from the 30's or before. Highly unusual in that it's the only cast aluminum food chopper from this period that I'm aware of. A must for your collection! It is marked" Aluma" in script with an underline on the body and"J.K. Sebo& Co. Brooklyn 21 N.Y. on the handle. Hardwood handle. It comes with the steel chopper blade and one steel extrusion plate. Because of the cast aluminum construction. It doesn't weight as much as the cast iron models and the body will not rust. 3) Made in Erie. PA, Griswold#2 meat and food grinder/ chopper circa early 1940's, body shows a 2 on the front and also bears the number"1712" near the mounting screw assembly at the bottom(see photos) C

Cast(I believe for sure) Griswold 3 human powered grinder. From my Grandma's house and it got a lot of use way back in the 1950's grinding meat. Nuts for nut rolls etc. Hasn't been used since then.
