Antique Turkestan Glazed Terracotta Plate Leaf Design 19th Century An antique Turkestan polychrome glazed terracotta plate decorated with a leaf design. Such pieces would have formed part of a home's traditional Turkestan tableware; stylistic influence from the Orient. Notably China are very obvious in some pieces and this, as early as the 9th century. Shaped on a very basic potter's wheel. The wares are then glazed and fired in a traditional kiln. The firing is done on a tripod and as a result three visible marks where the glaze is absent are visible at the center of the plate. A charming and high quality example of an Ancient Chinese Tang dynasty terracotta figure of an official. Dating to approximately 900 A.D. The male figure is shown wearing long robe with thick over-cloak. Open at the chest. He wears a conical cap on his head and bears a serene expression. The hands, held close to the chest, are perforated and would once have held a stick, perhaps a candle for lighting the dark tomb in ancient times. The figure appears to be dressed in thick garments for a cold climate. Perhaps indicating that he was a foreigner or from the borders of Imperial China. Height of figure: approx. 7 inches. Condition: Excellent condition. Intact. Unrestored. Traces of original pigments. Provenance: Acquired 1980's. London. The previous collector acquired a large group of similar figures, all in the 1980's from the London ... moretrade. This is one of the nicer examples from the group. In Colchia(Eastern Coast of the Black Sea) Possibly produced in Rhodes and brought by traders from Athens or Greece who settled in Colchis. Pigs were sacred to Demeter. The goddess of agriculture. They were offered as an inexpensive sacriice that substituted for the living animal. The figurines were also used as Children's toys. Some pigs had pebbles in them to function as a rattle. Some had a round vent in the bottom(such as this one does) for a child to use as a whistle or to make noise. THIS PIG is a charming. Solid figure. The animal has a short, upturned snout, typical of the domestic pig. Its body is plump. The animal is enlivened with small perked ears and eyes in relief. The face has a bronze painted finish with shiny orange lips and cheeks. The eyes are the same high gloss finish in white, brown and pale green. The arched eyebrows are incised as are all the Goldscheider faces. The flowing hair is adorned with appliqued flowers in natural shades of orange, yellow and white with green leaves. The condition is perfect on the mask with only a few chips on the underside of one flower and a leaf. The underside is rough unfinished terracotta with no maker marks.
