Found in the arid regions of North Africa, had a peculiar habit of depositing its eggs in camel dung(from which it feeds) and rolling it around with its hind legs into a ball until the ball of dung became hard. To the Egyptian this thought provoking achievement reminded them of the sun's rise across the sky every morning marking the beginning a new day(of life) The ancient Egyptian learned to make amulets of the scarab beetle from stone or faience to be worn for protection and good luck. Ancient Egyptian Scarab of a Horned Ram. New Kingdom (1570-1070 BC)
At first when I came across this scarab I thought that I was looking at the inscribed name of the Egyptian ram-headed god. Khnum. The image of the ram(facing right) and the hieroglyphic character to his front looks very much like the name for the god Khnum. But since I can't be positive of what that first character is, I'm just going to call it a scarab with an incised ram(possibly eating a bush) Anyway. This scarab is 17 x 12 mm long and holed from end to end for suspension around one's neck. Made of steatite the scarab dates probably from the end of Egypt's Second Intermediate Period to the end of the New Kingdom. The is NO RESERVE for this item and its authenticity is guaranteed forever.

Scarab itself is carved in the traditional dung beetle form and is highly stylized. This Ramesside scarab originates from Egypt and dates to the Egyptian New Kingdom. Which dates the piece to around 1550- 1069BC. Bottom of piece depicts a hunting scene showing a human figure with bow on right with animals, possibly a lion, depicted to the left. The piece is nicely stylized, light brown in color throughout. The piece is in great condition, free of any chips, but does show weathering on its surface as depicted in the pictures provided. A New Kingdom style circa 1600 BC to 1100 BC Steatite Scarab purchased from The Barakat Gallery on Rodeo Drive.Beverly Hills,C.A.I have the original letter of authenticity and envelope,the letter with the scarabs description is signed by Mr.Fayez Barakat.Before I purchased this,I fully researched the Barakat Gallery.They have been featured in many artifact/antiquities magazines and Mr.Barakat was/is quite reputable.I couldn't find anything negative about them as far as selling replicas/fakes.The scarab itself has remained in the little case it came in when I purchased it in either'03 or'04 for approx $300- $400.00.The drill hole through the scarab is not perfect in size,nor does it fully line up from one end to the other,which is the way it should be.Modern fakes will have a drill hole that goes straight through perfectly lined ... moreup because they'll use a modern drill.I'm basing the authenticity of this scarab off the letter and the reputation of the Barakat Gallery,and all the research of ancient egyptian scarabs that I've done over many years through books,photos and viewing real ones in museums.Scarab shows alot of wear and has very worn red dye in places,most of it though has worn off.It measures slightly over 1/4" long x just under 1/4" high,very tiny.I tried to crop each picture for the closest view I could obtain with my camera without making it blurry,tiny size made it difficult. I want to further note that the reason I fully researched the Barakat gallery before purchasing this scarab is because I had bought a so called genuine scarab off another site before I bought this one.When I received it,it was anything but authentic.It looked too new,showed no signs of wear,the drill hole was perfect and it appeared to have been cast with some sort of plaster.Scarabs were used in every day life in ancient Egypt,most were worn as rings or on a necklace and would have a piece of twine strung through the drill hole,so wear of that area in particular is an important thing to look for. Up for auction is an Egyptian Scarab Pendant dating to betwen approximately 664- 30 B.C. the Late Period to the Ptolemaic Period. The dating is based on the use of Detomic script on the back of the scarab. Detomic script replaced heiroglyphics and was used throughout Egypt from the Late Period through the Ptolemaic Period. It was itself replaced by Coptic. A Greek based alphabet. The scarab measures approximately 3 1/2" x 1" x 3/4" It appears to be made of wood but we are not certain. It has a hole in the center for a string or something else to hang it on. There is some chips as can be seen in the picture.
