The Treasury of Basel Cathedral” By Timothy Husband. Published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art& Yale University Press in 2001. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The medieval Treasury of the Basel Minster miraculously survived earthquakes. Wars, iconoclasm, and the Reformation, only to be dispersed in the early nineteenth century. More than half of its holdings are now in the Historisches Museum Basel, while the remainder are in museum collections all over the world. This book presents more than seventy-five of these splendid ecclesiastical and secular objects from the Basel Minster, dating from the early eleventh through the early sixteenth century, spanning the Early Romanesque period to the Reformation. Most of the works are of gold and silver-many encrusted with precious stones, antique gems, or translucent enamels-but ... morethere are also textiles and objects of hardstone, rock crystal, bronze, and wood, including the doors of the original storage cupboards. All are reproduced in full color and fully discussed. The four essays in the volume focus on the history of medieval Basel and on the function of cathedral treasuries, with particular emphasis on the Basel Treasury and its contents. 2 Medieval 16th Century Antiphonal Music Sheets on Velum - Ancient Antiques
An Estate Sale find from a decade or more ago. So I don't know the history of this particular manuscript, or country of origin. This is a double sheet from an old volume of church music- painstakinly inked onto velum in what I believe is Latin. Probably by monks sometime in the 16th century. Each individual page measures 14-1/2 inches wide and 20 inches tall. Making the overall dimensions 29" x 20" The pages show age, and although they have some of the characteristic rippling, and a little curling at the corners, they are in nice condition for being well over 500 years old and lay basically flat! I've seen several individual pages listed, but not a double leaf. The yellow aging is much more present on the two outside pages than the two inside ones. As I believe you can tell in the pictures. Also, some photos look like the ... moreink has bled through from the other side, but it's just that the flash makes it appear that way. There is a small ink smear on the upper part of one of the inside pages. Which I find endearing- I can imagine the monk who has been laboring over his work having a fuss over the smear that occurred on his otherwise beautiful sheet. My photos should answer any other questions you have. But feel free to send me a message if I left some detail out. Pictures on the listing are ALWAYS of the actual item you are bidding on! Please remember that all of my items are previously loved and used and are sold SOLD AS IS/ AS FOUND. Our home is smoke free. But we do have a cat that we love, and it is possible that a hair or two might accidentally end up in a package. Just mentioning that in case it matters to you.
