Now retired but consulting for Forum, was a dealer in antiquities for 40 years. We hope you find a few nice pieces here to enhance your collection. Time of Exile to Time of Judah Maccabee. Found at Hebron. Hebron is nestled in the Judean Mountains. In the southern West Bank, 30 km(19 mi) south of Jerusalem. It is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible as the site of Abraham's purchase of the Cave of the Patriarchs from the Hittites. King David reigned from Hebron for over seven years. After the destruction of the First Temple, most of the Jewish inhabitants of Hebron were exiled, and according to the conventional view, their place was taken by Edomites in about 587 B.C. Classical Greek Votive Pottery Cow 450 B.C.
This is one of the largest and rarest examples of Classical Greek art that we have seen. Dating to around 450 BC this beautiful and large naturalistic pottery sculpture of a Cow would have once served in a Temple in ancient Greece as a Fertility Votive. She is shown with full udders and teats. Her tail raised. She has flared nostrils and her mouth is partly open, head turned to the right. A very large, naturalistic terracotta with pathos. The classical Greeks were expert sculptors with terracotta as well as stone and marble. This being a glaring example of their expertise. A piece such as this was likely moulded in sections, then finished by hand. Length of terracotta alone: 13 inches. Height: 7 1/2 inches. Width: 8 inches. Condition: Limbs. Ears, horns, and tail fractured as shown; part of right foreleg re-attached following clean break. ... moreMounted as shown. Provenance: German private collection. 2008. Previously in an English private collection and acquired in the 1970's. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described.
