Ancient Greek Apulian Daunian Pottery Kyathos - 350 B.C.
An ancient native Italic Daunian polychrome painted Anthropomorphic Kyathos. Dating to approximately 350 B.C. A highly decorated and imaginative ceramic. The handle of which has been stylized into an Anthropomorphic plank figure, with two eyes, a nose, headdress and a long cape. The vase is wide and heavy, with short neck and flaring lip. Concentric bands decorate the piece circumferentially, with cross hatch and other geometric decoration adorning the vessel. Daunia is a region of Puglia in Southern Italy. In ancient times this region developed a distinctive ceramic art. Influenced by the neighbouring Greek colonies but unique in style. This is a particularly fine and well preserved example of Daunian pottery and displays the imagination of the Daunian coroplastic artists, who delighted in incorporating abstract figures into their vases. ... moreMaximum Height: 9 inches. Condition: Intact and unrestored. An original firing crack to the base of the idol figure. A phenomenon that is common with ceramics of this type. A small surface chip at the upper lip, does not detract from the piece. Provenance: Ex British private collection. Ex London Art market. Please note; this is a genuine and highly collectible ancient Greek Kyathos offered with no reserve to promote our ebay store. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described. For added security we offer a full money-back guarantee if a recognized authority disputes the authenticity of any object sold. Classical Greek Votive Pottery Cow 450 B.C.
This is one of the largest and rarest examples of Classical Greek art that we have seen. Dating to around 450 BC this beautiful and large naturalistic pottery sculpture of a Cow would have once served in a Temple in ancient Greece as a Fertility Votive. She is shown with full udders and teats. Her tail raised. She has flared nostrils and her mouth is partly open, head turned to the right. A very large, naturalistic terracotta with pathos. The classical Greeks were expert sculptors with terracotta as well as stone and marble. This being a glaring example of their expertise. A piece such as this was likely moulded in sections, then finished by hand. Length of terracotta alone: 13 inches. Height: 7 1/2 inches. Width: 8 inches. Condition: Limbs. Ears, horns, and tail fractured as shown; part of right foreleg re-attached following clean break. ... moreMounted as shown. Provenance: German private collection. 2008. Previously in an English private collection and acquired in the 1970's. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described.
