Ancient Viking Medieval Bronze Sword Chape - Odin
An extremely rare Ancient Viking bronze scabbard chape. Depicting the Norse god Odin, dating to approximately 800-900 A.D. The chape is of usual Viking form and is constructed in openwork technique. The decoration is in'Jelling' style and depicts a central moustached figure on both sides. With bulging eyes, triangular nose and slit mouth. Both figures are surrounded by an elaborate intertwined complex of foliage and animals. The central figure, probably representing the Norse God Odin, appears to be holding the sprouting branches with both hands. On one side the figure appears to have a circular navel. Two bear heads lie at the top of the chape. A remarkably complex masterpiece of Viking art. The chape would have attached to the very distal end on the scabbard in ancient times. Olive-green patina. It appears that a small area of one side of the chape has been flattened in antiquity, with the insertion of two tiny iron pins. Here is an authentic Viking ring from the 9th- 12th century. It was found by a metal detector in an ancient Viking settlement along the Baltic Sea in Latvia. Viking or Merovingian ZOOMORPHIC decorated bronze sheet belt part ?
A most interesting fragment from a bronze belt? or similar embellished piece. It is decorated with a representation of zoomorphic animal faces. the piece is@ 1 1/2 inches wide and 4 inches long, although it is only a short section, what remains of this belt is in solid condition and the decoration is clearly visible to the naked eye. The pattern probably covered the whole belt, it is formed by a series of punched dots. The dots are very small, struck with a fine sharpened point, they do not pierce the bronze only leave an embossed mark. The animal heads are distinct, but i cant identify what they represent. Many zoomorphic designs represent specific creatures but others are generic creatures just to form a pattern. this was found in the south of France in the languedoc region which is west towards the Pyraneese mountains. From the style i ... moream inclined to think that this could be Merovingian in origin. It is similar to viking designs but seems to be from an earlier period, where it was found is a known centre for Merovingian culture so this could also be an indication of it's origin. An interesting item, worthy of further research, i have drawn on a piece of paper as near as i can what the design is incase the photographs do not show it clearly.
