Roman Bronze Seal Ring
Roman Bronze Seal Ring internal dia: 22 mm weight: 12 gm The Roman Empire was the post-Republican period of the ancient Roman civilization. Characterised by an autocratic form of government and large territorial holdings in Europe and around the Mediterranean. The term is used to describe the Roman state during and after the time of the first emperor, Augustus. The 500-year-old Roman Republic, which preceded it, had been weakened and subverted through several civil wars. Several events are commonly proposed to mark the transition from Republic to Empire, including Julius Caesar's appointment as perpetual dictator(44 BC) the Battle of Actium(2 September 31 BC) and the Roman Senate's granting to Octavian the honorific Augustus(4 January 27 BC) Roman expansion began in the days of the Republic, but the empire reached its greatest extent ... moreunder Emperor Trajan: during his reign the Roman Empire controlled approximately 6.5 million km2 of land surface. Because of the Empire's vast extent and long endurance, the institutions and culture of Rome had a profound and lasting influence on the development of language, religion, architecture, philosophy, law, and forms of government in the territory it governed, particularly Europe, and by means of European expansionism throughout the modern world. In the late 3rd century AD, Diocletian established the practice of dividing authority between four co-emperors, in order to better secure the vast territory, putting an end to the Crisis of the Third Century. During the following decades the empire was often divided along an East/West axis. After the death of Theodosius I in 395 it was divided for the last time.8] The Western Roman Empire collapsed in 476 as Romulus Augustus was forced to abdicate by Odoacer. The Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire ended in 1453 with the death of Constantine XI and the capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks led by Mehmed II. Soldiers would bury their coins and jewelry before going into battle, and many of them did not return. They were also buried to avoid tax collectors and thieves. In ancient times, a ring distinguished an individual in a way that other forms of jewelry did not. Finger rings represented the language of social code, and connoted ... moreone’s social standing. Under the Empire, the finger ring was still considered a privilege, conferred for military distinction. As time wore on and attitudes changed, the ring was more freely bestowed. Even so, the ring retained its position as a mark of dignity, as a rich ornament, as an important seal, and as a token of betrothal. Special caskets were created for holding rings, and it was customary to remove a ring from the casket, to place on the finger of a visiting guest welcomed into one's home. The history of the Roman world is an epic story which stretches out over the course of more than two millennia- the story of an small group of villages which went on to dominate a major part of the western world and was to substantially define its culture. It is obviously impossible to summarize the entire history within a few lines. However. Most chronologies distinguish between the following phases: Origins and Roman Monarchy(753- 509 B.C. A somewhat less familiar period, at the end of which Roman territory ... morewas only one small area, Latium, which remained threatened on all sides by Italic and Etruscan peoples. Very Elaborate. Heavy, Size 6 Genuine Ancient Engraved Starburst Bezel Roman Bronze Ring 3rd Century A.D. CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Roman Bronze Ring with Engraved Starburst Bezel. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire(Thracia) 3rd Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Fits ring size 6(U.S. Diameter: 18 1/2mm* 18mm(outer diameter) 17mm* 16 1/2mm(inner diameter) Bezel: 11 1/2mm(length) 11mm(height) Tapered Width Band: 5mm(at bezel) 2 1/2mm(at sides) 3mm(at back) Weight: 1.88 grams. CONDITION: Good! Completely intact. Relatively light wear consistent with infrequent use, moderately light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A remarkably well preserved bronze ring circa 3rd century A.D. As you can see. The ring is very bold, handsome, and elegant in design. The"bezel" or face of ... morethe ring is engraved with a classic starburst design accentuated with a periphery line. The engraved starburst design is very well preserved and very finely engraved. It is preserved in very good condition. Starburst themes of one variety or another were a very popular geometric design during the first few centuries A.D. and the starburst design engraved into the surface of this bezel is exceptionally well executed and well detailed. All of the engraving exhibits very fine workmanship. Not terribly uncommon, but nicely done. Aside from the very slight wear to the ring caused by some Roman citizen using it during his lifetime. There are no other detractions. The ring is of one-piece construction, much like a contemporary ring. The more archaic rings produced by Roman artisans were characteristically made in two pieces; an incomplete ring(a“shank” with a separately crafted bezel which was brazed to the shank in order to assemble the ring. As you can see, the design is quite elegant, and is very large and bold in character. Though not an uncommon theme, the level of preservation of this specimen is quite exceptional. Due to the bold sizing of the features,

It is today known as'the eternal city' The Romans believed that their city was founded in the year 753 BC. Modern historians though believe it was the year 625 BC. Early Rome was governed by kings, but after only seven of them had ruled, the Romans took power over their own city and ruled themselves. They then instead had a council known as the'senate' which ruled over them. From this point on one speaks of the'Roman Republic'The word'Republic' ... moreitself comes from the Latin(the language of the Romans) words'res publica' which mean'public matters' or'matters of state' The senate under the kings had only been there to advise the king. Now the senate appointed a consul, who ruled Rome like a king, but only for one year. This was a wise idea, as like that, the consul ruled carefully and not as a tyrant, for he knew that otherwise he could be punished by the next consul, once his year was up.Rome knew four classes of people. This division was very important to the Romans. The lowest class were the slaves. They were owned by other people. They had no rights at all. The next class were the plebeians. They were free people. But they had little say at all. The second highest class were the equestrians(sometimes they are called the'knights' Their name means the'riders' as they were given a horse to ride if they were called to fight for Rome. To be an equestrian you had to be rich. The highest class were the nobles of Rome. They were called'patricians' All the real power in Rome lay with them. The Roman Republic was a very successful government. It lasted from 510 BC until 23 BC- alm

The ring is twice the weight of the ordinary ring of the era, very durable and solid. The"bezel" or center part of this ring depicts a stylized starburst design which though pagan in origin, was co-opted by the Christians and evolved into a stylized depiction known as a“Stellata Cross” In hand the engraving of the starburst, or“Stellata Cross” engraving is fairly clear and easy to discern. It’s a little more difficult to discern in these images, as the design is worn and pebbled to the point of being somewhat faint. However the engraved design is clear enough to be unambiguous and unmistakable. The starburst design was co-opted by the Christians over the period between the second and fourth centuries. Metamorphosing into the“Stellata Cross” The pagan(or non-religious) starburst which was a very popular and frequent Roman ring motif for centuries, became even more so as it metamo

Ancient Roman Rare Black Glass Ring 100-200 AD
About The Roman Jewelry Apart from gold and other precious metals. Romans used glass to make their jewelry. Roman jewelry gives us an insight into the culture of this ancient country. Just like other ancient civilizations. Rome also had its distinct strata of social classes. In the Roman society, jewelry was worn for indicating the social status of a person and attaching pieces of clothing rather than beautification. Gold was used by the artisans and jewelers for carving the adornments and jewelry as it was believed to be the metal of the Gods and supposed to have descended from the sun. Other than gold, the materials used in jewelry making were bronze, Roman glass, bone beads and precious gemstones which were excavated from far off places like Persia, Far East, Indus Valley, etc. Diamonds, emeralds and sapphires found their way from the ... moresilk route to the Roman land to appease the rich and mighty of this civilization. About the Roman Rings Romans liked to wear big rings which drew attention and revealed the status of the wearer. A gold ring often contained a huge gemstone or Roman glass which was generally worn by the Senators and the bureaucrats. The common people referred as the Plebeians were allowed to wear only rings made of iron. However. Some Plebeians were awarded the right to wear the golden rings for their bravery or special service to the state. But gradually such stringent rules were relaxed during the reign of Justinian I. Women of ancient Rome were more inclined to wear multiple rings of varied materials and designs on their hands without the constraints of social classes. Roman Glass Roman jewelry has been described as an amalgamation of Eastern and Etruscan jewelry styles. Combining the use of colored stones favored in the East with manipulated goldwork typical of Etruscan jewelry. The Romans greatly favored the use of stone and glass in their jewelry, and expanded the Hellenistic tradition by foc
