An ancient Egyptian faience shabti. Dating to Egypt's Late Period, approximately 664- 323 BC. Of good style. The figure is shown wearing the tripartite ... morewig, beard of Osiris, holding the hoe and pick, seed basket and back pillar behind, with a frontal column of hieroglyphics. The shabti(ancient Egyptian"shawabti" Was a funerary figure, placed in the tombs of wealthy individuals that, on account of its human appearance and hieroglyphic text identifying it, would fool the gods into thinking that the shabti was the deceased! This was important as all Ancient Egyptians might be required to perform menial manual labour in the afterlife, if summoned. So it became common practice among the highly religious and superstitious elite to place small figures(sometimes as many as 300) in their burial chambers, that could be substituted for themselves if need be. Thus manual work could be avoided, the shabtis"coming to life" if called and performing the work themselves. This belief may appear strange to our modern ideas of religion and the world but in Ancient Egypt art and religion were inextricably linked. To the extent that figures such as the present example could be imbued with life, given the right circumstances. It was deemed that a"spell" should be written on the shabti so that it should awaken as planned- this is the so-called shabti spell from chapter six of the Book of the Dead and reads as follows: O shawabti. If[name of deceased] is called upon, If he is appointed to do any work which is done on the necropolis. Even as the man is bounden. Namely to cultivate the fields, To flood the river-banks or to carry the sand of the East to the West, And back again, then'Here am I! you shall say" A fascinating piece of ancient Egyptian faience sculpture. Height: 4 1/4 inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Museum Gallery. With a number of variant spellings) funerary figurines were placed in tombs among the grave goods and were intended to act as substitutes for the deceased. Should he be called upon to do manual labor in the afterlife. They were used from the Middle Kingdom(around 1900 BC) until the end of the Ptolemaic Period nearly 2000 years later. A shabti of the pharaoh Pinedjem I. Now residing in the Brooklyn Museum. The term shabti applies to these figures prior to the Twenty-first dynasty of Egypt but after the end of the First Intermediate Period. And really only to figurines inscribed with Chapter Six of the Book of the Dead. Otherwise. They might better be defined by the generic term, funerary figurines. The shawabti were a distinct class of funerary figurines within the area of Thebes during the New Kingdom. The term ushabti became prevalent after the 21st Dynasty and remained in use until Ptolemaic times. It is thought by some that the term ushabti meant"follower" or"answerer" in Ancient Egyptian. Because the figurine"answered" for the deceased person and performed all the routine chores of daily life for its master, though it would be difficult to reconcile this derivation with the form of shawabti. Inscriptions Shabti inscriptions often contain the 6th chapter of the Book of the Dead. Translated as: Illumine the Osiris NN. Whose word is truth. Hail, Shabti Figure! If the Osiris

2 EGYPTIAN USHABTI SHAWABTI FUNERARY PHARAOH FAIENCE Amulet Statuette figure
I am offering for your consideration these two ~ 2 ~ miniature copies of ancient Egyptian USHABTI/ SHABTI/ SHAWABTI Funerary Pharaoh figures/ amulets statuettes. These are faience figures that are very small ~ one is 2" tall and the other is 1 3/4" tall. The smaller one has a more blue green tin glaze while the slightly larger one has some splotches of blue green tin glaze with also a lot of gray. There is a chip on the feet of the larger one. These were probably made as copies of the original Ushabti and were meant to serve as an amulet for good luck. I am happy to hear from my more knowledgable viewers. Thank you for looking. Authentic Ancient Egyptian Faience Shabti / Ushabti Statue Figure - 664 BC
A well modeled ancient Egyptian faience shabti. Dating to Egypt's Late Period, approximately 664- 323 B.C. Of good style. The figure is shown wearing the tripartite wig, beard of Osiris and holding agricultural implements; the hoe and pick. The shabti(ancient Egyptian"shawabti" Was a funerary figure, placed in the tombs of wealthy individuals that, on account of its human appearance would fool the gods into thinking that the shabti was the deceased! This was important as all Ancient Egyptians might be required to perform menial manual labour in the afterlife, if summoned. So it became common practice among the highly religious and superstitious elite to place small figures(sometimes as many as 300) in their burial chambers, that could be substituted for themselves if need be. Thus manual work could be avoided, the shabtis"coming ... moreto life" if called and performing the work themselves. This belief may appear strange to our modern ideas of religion and the world but in Ancient Egypt art and religion were inextricably linked. To the extent that figures such as the present example could be imbued with life, given the right circumstances. The piece is made from Egyptian faience. Which is a material somewhere between ceramic and glass, composed of crushed, fired quartz and prized in ancient times for its beautiful glaze. A fascinating piece of Ancient Egyptian faience sculpture. Height: 3 1/4 inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Museum Gallery. ArtAncient Ltd. recently purchased a large part of the inventory of the former"Museum Gallery" Previously located at 19 Bury Place, opposite the British Museum in London. Most of these objects were acquired between 1980-2003, from London Salerooms, private collectors and dealers. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described. The purpose of these figures. Historical Outline Of Anubis Anubis. God of Embalming and Guide and Friend of the Dead. Anubis(Inpew. Yinepu, Anpu) was an ancient Egyptian god of the underworld who guided and protected the spirits of the dead. He was known as the'Lord of the Hallowed Land' the necropolis- and Khentamentiu. Foremost of the Westerners' ... morethe Land of the Dead was thought to be to the west, where the Egyptians buried their dead. Khentamentiu was the name of a previous canine deity who was superseded by Anubis. The worship of Anubis was an ancient one- it was probably even older than the worship of Osiris. In the pyramid texts of Unas, his role was already very clear- he was associated with the Eye of Horus and he was already thought to be the guide of the dead in the afterlife, showing them the way to Osiris. In the text, it was written that"Unas standeth with the Spirits, get thee onwards, Anubis, into Amenti, onwards, onwards to Osiris. He was generally depicted as a black jackal-headed man. Or as a black jackal. The Egyptians would have noticed the jackals prowling around the graveyards, and so the link between the animal and the dead was formed in their minds. It has been noticed by Flinders Petrie that the best guides to Egyptian tombs are the jackal-trails. Anubis was painted black to further link him with the deceased- a body that has been embalmed became a pitch black colour. Black was also the colour of fertility, and thus linked to death and rebirth in the afterlife. Anubis was also seen as

Egyptian, ushabti, mummy, jewellry, Egypt
Welcome to my Auction! Up for your consideration is a small Egyptian Ushabti form. The piece measures 2" inches long and about 9/16" inch in width at its widest point. It has a small hole that goes horizontally through the head making it possible to wear on a necklace. Etc. It also appears to have traces of faience on both sides. especially on the front surface. I purchased this and several other similar Egyptian Ushabti(both larger and smaller) back in 2001. They were sold to me as 100% authentic antiques but since that time I have seen lots of information online that disputes this fact. I have read multiple times that no genuine small ushabti were made with a small hole through the head but at the time of purchase I accepted their explanation that this was done so that a thread could go through making it possible to stitch into ... morethe funerary wrappings. Sounded reasonable to me. So.I'm now listing it as a decorative item that would be a really cool to incorporate into a necklace. I'm listing it with a starting price that is 1/4 what I paid for it back then and hoping it will find a new home.

Translated as: Illumine the

Ancient Egyptian Faience Shabti / Ushabti with Hieroglyphs - 664 BC
A nicely glazed and detailed ancient Egyptian faience shabti. Dating to the XXVII- XXX dynasty, Egypt's Late Period, approximately 664- 323 B.C. Of good style. The figure is shown wearing the tripartite wig, beard of Osiris, holding the hoe and pick, seed basket and back pillar behind, with a frontal column of hieroglyphics. So it became common practice among the highly religious and superstitious elite to place small figures(sometimes as many as 300) in their ... moreburial chambers, that could be substituted for themselves if need be. Height: 4 3/4 inches. Condition: Very good. Restored from two fragments. Provenance: Ex. English deceased estate. Mainly formed in the 1960's. Ex Bonhams. Knightsbridge. Please no

Small, ushabti, mummy, figurine, Egypt, egyptian, collectable, jewelry
Welcome to my Auction! This listing is for the last. Small Ushabti figure from my vintage collection. I purchased it back around 2002 as an authentic. Antique piece but have learned since then that it is likely no more than perhaps 10- 15 years old. My understanding is that original, antique figures never had holes through them. For this reason it is being offered now as a collectable. Looking to the bright side.the hole makes it an excellent item to be incorporated into a necklace! This little figure measures 2" long and 3/4" wide at the widest point. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. ``d.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fvo%7B%3Dd70f%2B%3E%60%60d-13f04ca568b-0xfc-

Ancient Egyptian Blue Faience Ushabti Figure of High Priest of Amen, Pinudjem II
A rare. Ancient Egyptian brilliant blue faience Ushabti(or answerer) figure for the High Priest, Pinodjem II, dating to Egypt's 21st Dynasty, approximately 990- 969 B.C. This Ushabti belongs to the famous High Priest of Amun. Pinodjem(or Pinedjem) the Second, who ruled over the south of Egypt from 990- 969 B.C. during the tumultuous Third Intermediate Period. Shabties of Pinodjem II can only be found in Major institutions such as the British Museum(EA 64572) the Louvre(E 7663) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art(10.130.1055 a-c) as well as a few top private collections. The Shabti figure is shown in typical mummiform style. Wearing striated tripartite wig, seshed headband and with arms crosses, right over left. He holds two hoes in his hands, for working the land in the afterlife. The body with inscription in six bands of hieroglyphics ... morereading: The illumintated one. The Osiris, the'High Priest of Amen, Pinudjem Justified" followed by a passage of chapter VI of the Book of the Dead. This particular shabti dates to the fascinating Third Intermediate Period and is one of a very small number of antiquities available on the market today that can be firmly attributed to a known findspot- the tomb of Pinodjem the second that concealed the so-called"second cache of Deir el Bahri" The Third Intermediate Period was a time of great instability in ancient Egypt that followed the New Kingdom. The country was divided in two- Pharaohs controlled the north and High priests of Amun controlled the south. It was during this period that Pinodjem II was de facto ruler of southern Egypt. During this period of instability and decline there was a dramatic increase in tomb robbing. With many famous tombs on the Giza Plateau and elsewhere being breached. This was a terrifying prospect for the ancient Egyptian kings and high priests- if their tomb was breached and their mummies desecrated, passage into the afterlife could be halted. Thus, the high priests of Amun devised a last ditch plan- they gathered all the remain
