Huffener was born in Utrecht in 1923. One of nine children. He soon became known for his artistic talents, most notably for his still lifes, portraits, and abstractionist works. Huffener, inspired by his ... morefather, also became immersed in the world of anti-fascist activism. Come the start of the war, he began traveling the Netherlands, helping Jews escape Nazi-occupied Europe by providing them with forged papers, and hiding them from their persecutors. This incredible bravery and selflessness was documented in The Other Schindlers by Agnes Grunwald-Spier(2010) And Huffener was honoured by Yad Vashem as'Righteous Among the Nations' in 1998. His wartime contributions were also commemorated posthumously in March 2010, when Prime Minister Gordon Brown awarded him the Hero of the Holocaust medal for"the service of humanity. Huffener eventually moved to England in the 1950s. Establishing his own antiques business in 1959 in Albury, Surrey. Here, his knowledge and collections grew to encompass antiquities, ethnographic art, glass, paintings and fossils. Also noted for his restoration skills, Huffener was much respected in his field, coming to befriend Herbert Reiser, one of the world's leading collectors. A genuine. Large and very rare ancient Graeco-Italic terracotta Olla, dating to approximately 550 B.C. This vessel shape is known as an Olla. Likely used either for cooking and storage or for funerary purposes. Of globular form. With flattened circular base, biconical body, flared mouth and with two hand protomes between a pair of looped handles. The body and mouth of the pot with linear bands and geometric decoration in redish-brown paint. This rare form of vessel dates to the Daunian IIB Subgeometric period(approx 550-500 B.C. The handle of which has been stylized into an Anthropomorphic plank figure, with two eyes, a nose, headdress and a long cape. The vase is wide and heavy, with short neck and flaring lip. Concentric bands decorate the piece circumferentially, with cross hatch and other geometric decoration adorning the vessel. Daunia is a region of Puglia in Southern Italy. A well provenanced and rare ancient pottery jug. From the Persian Empire, dating to approximately the 2nd to 1st millennium B.C. A high quality. Beautifully modeled, miniature buff pottery jug. With bulging anthropomorphic body and tall, cylindrical neck, featuring adjacent pierced handles and splayed tripod feet. Constructed from fine reddish clay with a thin grey core, making the vessel surprisingly light. Bands of finely incised hatched pendant triangles decorate this wonderful piece.
