GJPaw Auctions is very pleased to offer a Rare Koma Burial Figure. The figure is an excavated burial piece from a 15th to 17th century tomb in the Komaland area of northern Ghana. These figures were first discovered by locals of Yikpabongo village in the 1960s during the process of excavating mud for building village houses. Soon after their discovery. Archaeologists started professional digs in Yikpabongo and examples of these terracottas started appearing in museums and for sale in European galleries. Interest in these terracottas grew and in 2000 they officially appeared on the ICOM Red List. Many of the terracottas found are broken fragments and only heads, but this piece is a full figure and a figure that appears in"janus form" with two faces. There are also traces of dirt on the statue. I don't know if this statue is ancient or not but it has good provinance having came out of the David Copley Estate.
