The LBK at maximum extent ranged from about the line of the Seine—Oise(Paris Basin) eastward to the line of the Vistula and upper Dniester, and southward to the line of the upper Danube down to the big bend. An extension ran through the Western Bug river valley, leaped to the valley of the Dniester, and swerved southward from the middle Dniester to the lower Danube in eastern Romania, east of the Carpathians. Danube lands near Vienna, by Johann Christian Brand, ca. 1760The LBK did not begin with this range and only reached it toward the end of its time. It began in regions of densest occupation on the middle Danube(Bohemia, Moravia, Hungary) and spread over about 1500 km along the rivers in 360 years. The rate of expansion was therefore about 4 km per year, which can hardly be called an invasion or a wave and does not offer much support to theories of population replacement. EUROPEAN STONE AGE ARTIFACTS BY PALATINA AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEED Description of the Homo Neanderthalensis- the Neanderthal( Neandertal) men from the Mousterian phase about 40.000- 60.000 years ago. It is a 133 mms large leaf shaped blade with special trimming at the upper side. Most likely used as an angle burin with two working zones! The Mousterian industry appeared around 200.000 years ago and persisted until about 40,000 years ago, in much the same areas of Europe, the Near East and Africa where Acheulean tools appear. In Europe these tools are most closely associated with Homo neanderthalensis, but elsewhere were made by both Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens. Mousterian tools required a preliminary shaping of the stone core from which the actual blade is struck off. The toolmakers either shaped a rock into a rounded surface before ... morestriking off the raised area as a wedge shaped flake(see photo at left) or they shaped the core as a long prism of stone before striking off triangular flakes from its length, like slices from a baguette. Because Mousterian tools were conceived as refinements on a few distinct core shapes, the whole process of making tools had standardized into explicit stages(basic core stone, rough blank, refined final tool) Variations in tool shapes could be produced by changes in the procedures at any stage. However, flints found on the surface were often frost-damaged and so raw material for making the large flake axes soon became scarce. A new type of axe, the core axe, gradually appeared and became ever more common but flake axes, often manufactured from irregular flint fragments, persisted throughout the Maglemose(8900- 6400 bc) and Kongemose(6400- 5400 bc) periods. The improved availability of good flint may explain the renewed occurance of the flake axe during the Ertebølle period. Flake axes from the early Neolithic period, often of irregular form and occasionally with polishing on the blade, occur very frequently. After about the middle of the megalith grave period, flake axes essentially disappeared. They appeared once again during the dagger period(2400- 1800 bc) and the early bronze age, where often rather inferior quality flake axes are found associated with settlement sites.
