The wood is a very dense closed-pore hardwood similar to that found in identified Aboriginal clubs and boomerangs I have owned. It has an old, appealing, untouched surface, with much of the marks left by the stone carving process remaining. There are a few tight age cracks, but no other condition issues.

The comic is in Fine- to Fine condition or better. Kept as store stock, bagged with boards, and in pretty nice shape, with minimal signs of wear, including a couple blunted corners, some minor spine wear, a couple small tears along the edges front and back and top corners, and minor yellowing(see picture) Otherwise, the comic is complete, flat, has no loose pages, and has great color gloss. Industry: Upper Paleolithic/ Palaeolithic: Aurignacian. Dating: approx. 38.000 to 28.000 B.C. Description: Size: length 6.1 cm, weight 27 grams, Shape. Retouch: a gorgeous double burin on flake: the burin at the end shown at the top of the first picture is on straight retouched truncation. With at least 4 short burin blows at the right edge(left edge of the interior side) The first blow ends in a deep hinge fracture, and the edge below is retouched. The burin at the other end is quite unusual: the edge is retouched and there are at least 3 very short transverse burin blows, together with more, even facial retouch. NORTHERN EUROPEAN STONE AGE ARTIFACTS BY PALATINA AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEED Description" Microlith cores. Conical, irregular" They occur in the older phase of the Maglemose Culture 8900-6400 bc. During the Mesolithic period(c.9300-4000 BC) after the end of the ice age. Hunters spread across the extensive area which connected Denmark to England during the Continental period. The forest was relatively light in the beginning with bison, wild horses, elk and aurochs. In time, the forest became more dense and red deer and roe-deer became the commonest game. Settlements were often situated near the edges of lakes which have since become bogs. In the east of Denmark, the peat in these bogs has preserved a rich variety of weapons and tools, bones from slaughtered animals and the remains of dwellings, including hut floors made of wood and ... morebark. During the Atlantic period, 6400-4000 BC, the sea level rose so much that the northern parts of Denmark were divided into islands, and deep fiords cut into the landscape. A dense forest dominated by limetrees spread across the land. The population was found mostly near the coasts and lived on fish and shellfish, supplemented by hunting and sealing. Food scraps were piled up in kitchen middens which contained huge numbers of oyster shells. Grave finds bear witness to care and respect for the dead. Cores are blocks of flint which flakes have repeatedly been struck from the same side. In the more highly developed flaking technique the core is more frequently conical or cylindrical. Though sometimes oblong, with striking platforms at one end(Handled Cores) Often the cores are carefully shaped before flaking begins. Good cores display parallel, fairly regular scars, in most instances all the way round. Provenance is an old collection. More details will follow the artifact. Ancient Greek Thessaly Stone Age Neolithic Terracotta Figures / Idols - 6800 BC
Three ancient Thessalian Greek Neolithic terracotta figures. Dating to 6800– 5300 BC. These fragmentary figures all display at least one element of the usual exaggerated proportions of the abdomen. Buttocks and thighs one associates with Palaeolithic and Neolithic idols. One shows only the torso, displaying a possible pregnancy, the second shows a figures with the arms held by the side and the third show a seated overweight female with her hands resting on her thighs. As home to some of the very first Neolithic communities on mainland Europe. The fertile plain of Thessaly in northern Greece could be termed the cradle of European civilisation. Small farming communities began to emerge around 7000BC, gathering together in small villages of wattle and daub huts, these people survived by cultivating small fields of wheat and keeping herds of ... moregoats, sheep and cattle. In some senses they seem so similar to us, yet in others they are so distant. We know they bred dogs, perhaps to work or perhaps simply for company, they collected seashells to carve into ornate beads and bracelets, and they travelled to trade their goods with rival villages. But above all, they seem to have often given over time to create these enigmatic figures from the wet clay. The beliefs and the gods they worshipped are not known. But perhaps these delicate little figures offer us a hint. We can only guess whether they represent ancestors, primordial gods or fertility figures, but their popularity shows how important they were to the people of Neolithic Thessaly. These remarkable artefacts stand as a monument to the tiny, pioneering communities that produced them. Height of tallest: 1 ⅞ inches. Condition: Good. Because of the rather large strike at the distal end, just aside the burin blow, the tip was sharp and pointed enough to be used as borer as well. EUROPEAN STONE AGE ARTIFACTS BY PALATINA AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEED Description of the Homo Neanderthalensis- the Neanderthal( Neandertal) men from the Mousterian phase about 40.000- 60.000 years ago. It is a very large blade tool. Most likely a knife or a side edged scraper. Length of this terrific white patinized artifact is 112 mms! From a great Southern German collection! The Mousterian industry appeared around 200.000 years ago and persisted until about 40,000 years ago, in much the same areas of Europe, the Near East and Africa where Acheulean tools appear. In Europe these tools are most closely associated with Homo neanderthalensis, but elsewhere were made by both Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens. Mousterian tools required a preliminary shaping of the stone core from which the actual blade is struck off. The toolmakers either shaped ... morea rock into a rounded surface before striking off the raised area as a wedge shaped flake(see photo at left) or they shaped the core as a long prism of stone before striking off triangular flakes from its length, like slices from a baguette. Because Mousterian tools were conceived as refinements on a few distinct core shapes, the whole process of making tools had standardized into explicit stages(basic core stone, rough blank, refined final tool) Variations in tool shapes could be produced by changes in the procedures at any stage. A consistent manufacturing goal was to increase as much as possible the cutting area on each blade. Though this made the toolmaking process more labor intensive, it also meant the edges of the tools could be reshaped or sharpened as they dulled, so that each tool lasted longer. The whole toolmaking industry had adapted to get the maximum utility from the labor invested at each step. Tool forms in the Mousterian industry display a wide range of specialized shapes. Cutting tools include notched flakes, denticulate(serrated) flakes, and flake blades similar to Upper Paleolithic tools. Points appear that seem designed for use in spears or lance
