GOLD ETCHED UNDERPLATE 12" HEISEY CAMBRIDGE? ROMAN or AZTEC WARRIORS THEME A very nice clear crystal underplate that measures 11-5/8" in diameter and was probably made by either Heisey. Cambridge or similar elegant glass maker during the early part of the 20th century. Has a polished edge on the bottom like most Heisey glass I have handled. There is a 3-1/2" indented center rim where a bowl was probably intended to fit. Around the outer edge is a 1-1/2" wide gold-gilt intricate design which appears to be warriors of some kind in full battle attire. A rather elaborate etching I can't quite make out whether they are intended to be Roman or possibly Aztec(close-up is shown) If you have a bowl that matches this underplate, would make a good marriage. Vintage Fornasetti Roman Ruins Gold Foil Lamp
Here is what I believe to be a Fornasetti lamp. A number of internet sites have this same lamp or very similar lamps identified as Fornasetti. You will have to use your own judgment. I believe it to be authentic Fornasetti. But can’t guarantee it. The lamp has a brass top and bottom with a glass cylinder between. The glass cylinder has a Fornasetti lithograph depicting Roman ruins on the inside. The rest of the cylinder is covered on the inside with gold foil. The lamp measures 25” to the top of the socket and 36” to the top of the harp. The brass is tarnished as would be expected– to clean it or not would be up to you. Everything seems to be in good condition– no cracks or chips to the glass. It’s a great lamp– certainly very typical of Fornasetti’s style. Great addition to your 50’s modern décor. The coins known as Koson gold staters have always been a bit of a mystery with two widely accepted but very different theories as to the who. When, where and why their minting, and what is the meaning of their designs. I don't expect to solve this mystery to everyone's satisfaction, but I would like to present my recent thoughts, observations, and some recent metallurgical information, along with my personal conclusions as to what it all means. The first theory, which has been around for a long time, is these are coins struck in 43 to 42 BC by Marcus Junius Brutus(assassin ... moreof Julius Caesar) from a treasure provided to him by the Roman Senate, for the purpose of raising an army to defend the Republic against forces loyal to the now dead Julius Caesar. A battle Brutus lost to Octavian at Philippi in 42 BC. This theory generally assumes the KOΣΩN inscription names a Dacian king, possibly Cotiso, whose troops Brutus may have hired. These coins are usually found in modern Romania and this theory assumes they arrived there with troops returning home after the battle. The second theory, which has gained favor recently, is Koson staters were struck in either Dacia(modern Romania) or ancient Thrace(Northern Greece) possibly by the same King Cotiso, and belong with a series of Geto-Dacian coins imitating Roman Republican denarii. This theory does not associate them with Brutus or a Senate treasure, and often dates them simply to the mid 1st Century BC, generally assuming some time after 42 BC. It is now common to see them listed as either Scythian from Dacia or Thracian from Northern Greece but for the purposes of this article I will refer to them as Dacian, as that is the region where they are usually found. The carving depicts a helmeted Greco-Roman soldier in profile. The carving is wonderfully detailed and very skillfully done.
