It has the irridescence and encrustation that I've seen in ancient Roman glass, but I'm very far afield from my limited areas of expertise; In all truthfulness I have no idea if the form is correct for real Roman glass or whether this is one of the many fakes that are apparently made for the tourist market. Circa 200-400AD EXTREMELY RARE JUG/ UNGUENTARIUM An unguentarium(plural"unguentaria" is a small ceramic or glass bottle found frequently by archaeologists at Hellenistic and Roman sites. Especially in cemeteries. Its most common use was probably as a container for oil, though it is also suited for storing and dispensing liquid and powdered substances. Some finds date into the early Christian era. From the 2nd to the 6th century they are more often made of blown glass rather than clay. A few examples are silver or alabaster. Unguentaria were used as product packaging in commerce and for funerary practice. They are distributed throughout the Mediterranean region of the Roman Empire from Palestine to Spain. This is a nice pair of depression glass"Salt" and"Flour" shakers by McKee. Made of black glass in the Roman Arch design. They measure 4-1/2" high with aluminum lids. A beautiful ancient Roman green glass flask. Dating to the 4th century AD. Free blown. Composed of a beautiful olive green glass, the body in the shape of a ripe fruit hanging from a tree. The neck flaring, the small base slightly concave and with a prominent pontil mark(scar left behind from the ancient production process) The body is decorated with a series of carefully crafted shallow ribs which would have been tool worked whilst the glass was still soft. The style is highly suggestive of an origin within the eastern confines of the empire, likely the Levant. Many examples of this type can be termed somewhat crude. With little care taken or skill implied as to the overall form. That is not the case with this piece; it is the product of an ancient craftsman at the height of his craft and everything about this beautiful little flask is carefully ... morebalanced. Condition issues to be noted would be some wear to the gold trim around the top edge of the glass, very small stain on the outside center seat of glass, from sitting in place inside the caddy.
