A very fine and complete 17th century Turkish Kilij. Tughra stamped silver. This rare sabre type measures 94cms in the sheath. 90cms out, with a blade length of 77cms from the centre of the quillon block to the tip. The grip slabs are a fine and rare horn. Being very fine and well coloured examples free from loss or damage. The slabs are pinned through the tang and sit either side of a gilded decorative silver grip strap. The guard is silver with lobed quillon ends and the seal of Solomon engraved to one side. The blade is of a rare but traditional profile being with a raised Yelman. The surfaces show a very good high contrast Wootz Damascus ... morepatterning. It is distal tapered from the spine to the cutting edge and does not have fullering. The cutting edge remains extremely sharp. The scabbard is covered in its original mule skin leather. Stitched to the rear. The fittings are all silver with remains of gilding clearly seen. Both the throat and the drag are stamped with the Sultan's Tughra. Being reserved only for official documents& coins, indicating the maker as being a tax payer to the Sultan. The Tughra. Although not perfectly stamped, appears to be that of Mustafa the first, or Murad the fourth. Of special interest is the presence of an original silk and bullion thread suspension baldric. The arrangement retains partial leather coverings. A possible indicator of its use in campaigns abroad, something to protect the fine threads from wear when travelling and in combat. Equally important is manner in which the sword hangs when suspended. A very fine and unusually complete early Turkish Kilij with Tughra stamped silverwork. For all detailed images. Antique Turkish / Ottoman Officers Dress Sword & Scabbard - No Res.
I am not an expert on antique swords. I believe this sword to be Turkish(Turkey) or Ottoman because of the cresent moon and star on the center hand guard shell and also the handle tip. There is a feathery symbol of the opposite center hand guard shell. Otherwise. There is no writing or numbers on this sword, blade, or scabbard. I found a similar sword design that was identified as a WWI officers Turkish sword. BUT, my example has decorations on the brass D guard panel, the brass handle spine, and the handle band above the cross guard. Also there is some decoration on the brass scabbard ring band and the very bottom panel of the tip guard. The blade has a slight curve and also a blood grove down both sides down 2/3rds of the blade length. The bottom edge of this sword shows no signs of sharpening bUT is very sharp! The sword is 38" long ... moreincluding the scabbard. This sword is in very nice, as found condition. It carries some natural tarnish and patina, with only mild staining in a few places. It has not been buffed or polished. It has NO bends, pitting, rust, nicks, chips, deep dents or scratches. There is some signs of wear and light use to be expected from an antique piece such as this. Offered is a very old antique tinned copper Ottoman. Or possibly Civil War Water Canteen or Flask, with metal hang rings. This measures 9" tall x 7.5" wide x 4" deep, including the spout.The rings each measure 1.5" in diameter. I see no markings, or signatures. I would consider the condition very good for it's age. The original metal hang rings still intact on each side. The spout his a few dings around the top edge, otherwise in good condition, I didn't fill it with water, but no holes are visible. This was used, and has what looks like patches on one side. The repairs were made while it was in use, or when originally made, nothing recent, as the patina is consistent throughout the piece. This is a rare find. These are antique silver Turkish nalins for children. Nalins are traditional Turkish bath shoes worn during the Ottoman Empire. They are embelished in hand tooled silver over teak wood with red velvet lining. They are not marked but tested positive for silver- sterling silver. The value of the embellishing materials represented the heirarchy in society. They are 5" long x 1 3/4" wide x 2 1/8" tall to top of heel. Please see pictures as they are part of the description.
