Ca. 100 B.C.250 A.D. depicting a seated obese figure on a stool. This interesting fellow squats with arms curving and meeting at the waist, the legs slightly bent before him as he is supported on a short rounded leg beneath the buttocks, probably indicative of a short stool. The wonderful face is decorated with a faded black painted section on the right side, and he wears a large curving mushroom shaped cap and ear ornaments. RARE Pre-Columbian Nayarit Stone Bird Head Pendant & Blade Holder, Mexico
A Pre-Columbian Nayarit stone bird head pendant/ blade holder. Ancient Mexico, circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. This pendant is pierced for suspension. And was likely around the neck on a necklace by the ancient owner. The slit in the bottom and perforated holes were for mounting a sharp obsidian cutting blade, allowing the blade to be held and used either for practical or ritual purposes. The bird head shape appears to be that of the Roadrunner, indigenous to the ancient West Mexican region, and revered by ancient inhabitants there as a skilled predator. Measures about 1 1/4" long. A RARE and interesting artifact. Condition: Intact with a great ancient patina. Showing minor wear, weathering and general minor abrasions and chips. 4 Piece Pre-Columbian Nayarit Shaft Tomb Offering Pottery Group, Ancient Mexico
A four piece grouping of Pre-Columbian Nayarit offering vessels. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. The plate measures about 5" across, the bowl about 4" across, the small jar about 5" tall and the fat jar about 5" tall. Each features a highly burnished orange finish. The bowl and the bottom of the plate feature interesting striated burnished decorative designs, best visible when viewed in cross light. These items would have been placed with the deceased in the deep shaft and chamber tombs of West Mexico to symbolically provide sustenance during the journey to their concept of the afterlife. It is rare to find matched grouping such a wide range of forms as these. Condition: Each vessel is intact and in excellent condition. With minor chipping, abrasions weathering and wear. A pair of Pre-Columbian Nayarit miniature offering vessels. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. The bowl measures about 2 1/2" wide and the mini olla measures about 1 3/4" tall. These items would have been placed with the deceased in the deep shaft and chamber tombs of West Mexico to symbolically provide sustenance during the journey to their concept of the afterlife. Miniature Pre-Columbian Nayarit Tripod Vessel, Ancient Mexico
A miniature tripod vessel from Pre-Columbian Nayarit. West Mexico, circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. Measures approximately 2 ¾” tall by about 2” wide. This interesting vessel features a reddish orange pigment over the surface. With a fine cream-colored slip, depicting circular symbolic forms around the exterior, possibly representing the sun. The rounded vessel body sits gracefully atop three tripod legs. Condition Intact overall. With one tripod leg reglued into place with no restoration over the breakline, and a trowel mark on the very bottom of the bowl. Provenance: Former Lynn Langdon collection of West Mexican artifacts. A Nayarit seated figure from Pre-Columbian West Mexico. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. This piece measures approximately 3 3/4" tall by about 2 1/4" wide, and depicts a seated individual. They are shown cloaked in a blanket with ornate designs indicative of Nayarit artistic sensibilities, wearing large ear and nose ornaments as well as a readdressing featuring a large decorated band. Original pigment remains, revealing geometric designs in white black and orange against a red slip, typical of Ixtlan del Rio variety Nayarit material. A wonderful diminutive example(rare) remaining in excellent condition. Condition: Intact with strong original pigment remaining. Minor abrasions. Weathering, wear and expected pigment loss. The figure, shows the remains of the original flesh colored paint, has striations at the top of the head to denote hair, wears a large nose ring and earrings, minimal facial features as is common with these figures. This auction is for a Pre Columbian Nayarit tripod bowl measuring 4" x 6" tall in excellent condition with no damage other than age wear and minor scratch marks not visible or deterring from this unusual figural design. Burgundy Brown paint with Tan background adorn the sides with strange serpent and alien looking figures with curled tails. The main listing photo looks like a lot of paint loss but is actually calcifaction which covered one side.This was a piece remaining from a collection and the most expensive and the best of the lot. i have collected Pre Columbian pottery in the past and could not let this one get away. Grinning through the fleshy lips, with a set of prominent teeth and the eyes set impossibly wide on the head– there is something discordant, even monstrous about this figure. Each component seems at odds with the other; be it the gaunt expression with the broad muscular torso or the thick-set legs with the emaciated arms. Yet to dismiss the art of the Nayarit as unaccomplished is to miss its purpose; these figures were never meant to be beautiful, they were meant to convey a sense of power. Standing on claw-like feet, brandishing a short knife and decorated with a deep ochre pigment, this warrior has an undeniable energy, an energy that seems to bleed from the clay itself. Huichol Indian Feather Headdress, Nayarit, MX
Made and used by the Huichol Indians of the Sierra Madre Occidental in Mexico. Feather headdress worn on top of a man's head during ceremonies. I was told it was worn by a peyotero and/or a matachin like dancer. It is also called a shaman's basket hat. The headdress was collected in the 1960s and probably dates to the 1940s/50s. It was in a private museum for about 10 years then stored away. It is in remarkable condition for its age but as you can see by the photos the feathers are somewhat pushed down and some of the feather stems are kinked. Not sure if that was from use or storage. The feathers can be pushed up to form a somewhat rounded form. The feathers are attached to a handwoven basket that measures 4" diameter and has very old and fragile cloth strap to keep the headdress on top of the head. The naked figure stares out into the distance through the hollow slits of her eyes, the mouth held open. She clutches her sides in the pose typical of Nayarit female figures, the gaunt features of the face contrasting with the broad body and exaggerated breasts. Her hair tied up into an elaborate coiffure, she wears three spools in each ear and a thick collar around the neck. This is not only an enchanting piece of pre-Columbian art. It tells the story of Nayarit ritual practices and traditional beliefs. This item is a unique terracotta set of figures around a table from Nayarit. It was purchased in the 60's in Mexico and was exported with all the requisite permits. Unfortunately copies of the export permits are no longer available. The condition is commensurate with the object's age. The outstanding detail of the figures is most unusual for this type of artifact. The separated figures are easily re-attached. Hi. I have 2 rare stone beads from Nayarit, Mexico for auction. These ancient artifacts are very unique. I have only seen a few stone beads ever that were carved to look like a kettle or cooking pot. These were recovered at the ruins of Santa Maria del Oro in Nayarit, Mexico. I acquired these from an estate of an archaeologist that worked in Mexico in the 1950's and 1960's. It must have taken quite awhile for them to make these 2,000 years ago. There is one foot damaged on each bead. The half dollar is for size comparison and is not included in this auction.
