Offered is a Collins claw hatchet head. This is a particularly useful type of axe. Combining a hatchet heavy enough to be used for hewing as well as a hammer poll and nail-pulling claws. The Collins company has roots reaching back to the early 19th century. Collins axes are still made today under different ownership. I can't date this tool exactly, but expect that it dates to the second half of the 20th century. The hatchet head is about 6-3/8 inches across and has a 4-inch bifacial bit. It weighs a little over 1-1/2 pounds. The hammer poll is about an inch square. Not including the claws. The hammer poll has minor dents and a little old mushrooming has been ground off. The hatchet had a decrepit, probably original handle when I got it. Some one attempted to tighten it by hammering in nails, thus causing a few small dents on the top eye. ... moreThey could be filed off pretty easily. It has been sharpened but the original straight bit profile has been maintained. It is correctly sharpened for splitting, and a very little honing would make it sharp enough to hew. The hatchet head is clean, dry and waxed. I've posted lots of pictures so you can look it over. Winner pays for USPS Priority in the USA. ANTIQUE HAND FORGED MAST SHIP AXE BALTIMORE MD. MAKER 1800s SHIPWRIGHT TOOL RARE
Here we have a RARE find and that would be a great older antique MAST or SHIP axe that has a partial makers stamp of JR HUDGINs.Hudgins was a blacksmith and edge tool maker that worked in BALTIMORE MD. in the early to mid 1800s. Needless to say his tools today are very rare to come across. I found this axe head on the eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay right across from Baltimore Md. in with some other shipwright tools. Head measures about 10 1/4 inch from poll to the cutting edge. Cutting edge is about 7 inch long, is a double bevel edge and is very sharp from an old period sharpening.This is a laminated tool with a body forged from wrought iron and a Steel"bit" forge welded on for the cutting edge, this bit can be seen.All welds are good with none loose or broken, eye is fine, not spread out etc. The Poll is fine with no damage ... moreor spreading. Head has a rough forged surface, has some pitting but is to be expected on something like this. Stamp is a bit hard to make out but you can tell what it is. From the top of the axe to the end of the handle is about 13" weighs 1 1/2 pounds. The leather sheath is marked"PLUMB" on the snap. There are two slits on the backside for lacing through a belt. This is the kind of hand tool that Boy Scouts frequently use and is great for camping trips. We found it at an estate sale in San Diego, California. My best guess is that this axe is about 100 years old. Condition: The leather sheath is in poor condition with 2/3 of the stitching gone and one rivet torn out. The axe shows normal. General signs of age and use. Rust on the head, some splits in the handle. Old Hand Forged Felling Axe Head Good Shape
Offered for purchase ONE Old Hand Forged Felling Axe Head. Measuring 7 3/16" long. The edge is 2 7/8" high, and this weighs 2 lbs 11 oz unboxed. Not signed as to the maker. This is in reasonably good shape and was cleaned. There is some patina but nothing too bad. This was painted red and I did clean most of that off, there is the odd dot down in the nooks and crannies. The edge is good with just some very tiny dings and is pretty close to being sharp. Someone(NOT ME) cleaned some mushrooming off of poll. There are some dings on the poll but it's not too bad. The eye is good. This one ain't the fanciest but it does have some age to it and it definitely ain't no cookie cutter factory axe. A good collectible old felling axe for sure! This hand-forged"RSM 1953"stamped axe head was purchased from the son of a retired blacksmith in Paradise. California, and 100% of the sale price over $25 will be given as charity to that young man and his family. We had a nice conversation and he told me his dad was a retired blacksmith in Magalia, and we discussed the possibility of me buying his dad's home-made blacksmith forge with fan, anvil, hammers and related tools, then I left. I thought the hand-forged axe head might get a great price on eBay. So I decided to create this auction to benefit him directly with anything I get over my cost, so here it is. Early English Hand Forged Cooper's Bearded Side Axe, W. Gilpin, Wedges Mills
Here we have a nice early. English Hand Forged Cooper's Bearded Side Axe. This axe has a great feel in the hand with an oak(ash or hickory? handle. It was obviously designed in the Bearded style and has a nice crossed-axes logo on the blade with the Maker's info: W. Gilpin. Wedges Mills, Warranted. It also has a nice beaded decoration on all four sides of the pole/hammer end. The blade edge is 7" long. The handle is 13-1/2"L. Nice axe for your collection. Apologies" there are some old worm holes. there is an old crack in the back side of the original handle. It is tight and solid(see pic 2) Note: Shipping cost quote is for PA to CA. This stone has very good hand holds. It has nice cutting or chopping ends. See photos. This item was found in the Susquehanna Valley. Pennsylvania, on private property. This stone is approx. 8 3/4 in. long. 2 1/2 in. wide, 1/2 in. thick. It weighs 16.6 oz. This item has not been authenticated but is believed to be an American Indian artifact.
