An ancient native Italic Daunian polychrome painted Anthropomorphic Kyathos. Dating to approximately 350 B.C. A highly decorated and imaginative ceramic. The handle of which has been stylized into an Anthropomorphic plank figure, with two eyes, a nose, headdress and a long cape. The vase is wide and heavy, with short neck and flaring lip. Concentric bands decorate the piece circumferentially, with cross hatch and other geometric decoration adorning the vessel. Daunia is a region of Puglia in Southern Italy. In ancient times this region developed a distinctive ceramic art. Influenced by the neighbouring Greek colonies but unique in style. An alabastron is a type of pottery used in the ancient world for holding oil. Especially perfume or massage oils. They originated around 12-11th century BC in ancient Egypt. As containers carved from alabaster– hence the name– but spread via ancient Greece to other parts of the classical world. Most types of alabastron have a narrow body with a rounded end. A narrow neck and a broad, splayed mouth. They were often left without handles. But some types were equipped with ear-shaped projections or lugs into which holes were punched. Strings were then put through these holes for easy mobility. This item belogs to the last described category of alabastrons. This piece is of exceptional size and provenance, deaccessioned from the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The original accession number is 79.663 and was given to the museum by Lt. Col. Jacob F. Baker. It was the last and finest unguentarium deaccessioned from the museum. This unguentarium. Or ointment bottle, is a fusiform(spindle) shape, produced in the Eastern Mediterranean. The base of the piece is a flaring ring with a small everted lip. It is an unusually tall example with a beautiful ochre glaze. These particular pieces are found in Cyprus and were used to store precious oils and perfumes. Similar pieces can be seen in the Cesnola Collection. This unique item was handmade in Athens, Greece in 1933, and is also a numbered item, No. 9, as stamped on the bottom. Picture shows a naked man on a ledge casting his line into the water to fish. One feature I cannot identify is a curved. Stamped name on the underside of the dish, above what appears to be a bull. There is also a certain name stamped under the bull's feet, below the horizontal line. This, too, is non-legible. This dish is an original piece and still vibrant in color and detail after all these many years. Very glossy exterior and interior. A kantharos or cantharus is a type of Greek pottery used for drinking. It is characterized by its high swung handles which extend above the brim of the pot. On the middle part of the body, the kantharos is decorated with three white ring cycles that surround the whole body of the pot. Up for sale is a beautiful authentic piece of Greek pottery. It is a Daunian Olpe excavated in Southeastern Italy. It dates circa 4th century B.C.E. This is a large and attractive Daunian pottery olpe uncovered in a Daunian tomb in 1944 by Byron Farwell. He later published a book called"The Farwell Collection- Monographs On Archaeology And Fine Arts. V6" in 1953.It is a bulbus vessel with everted rim and small foot and strap handle. It is decorated with concentric circles in red and brown pigment. It stands 6" tall! One section of the body has been reattached by an expert.
