As the distillation of alcohol was not known until the fourth century BC the scents were extracted by steeping plants. The materials were placed in a piece of cloth which was wrung until the last drop of fragrance had been retrieved. Alternatively they were boiled with oil and water and the oil skimmed off. As for the oils. There was a wide choice, the most commonly used being moringa, balanos, castor oil, linseed, sesame, safflower, and, to some extent, almond and olive. According to Theophrastus, who made a thorough study of fragrant substances in an essay entitled concerning odors, balanos was the least viscous and by far the most suitable oil, followed by fresh raw olive oil and almond oil. Antique Egyptian Scarab Seal Ring Set in 14K Yellow Gold in excellent condition.The ring is believed to be from the third Neo-Egyptian Revival period circa 1920's.There are no maker's or metal content marks on the gold band although it acid tests to be 14K yellow gold.Please see detailed photos provided.The ring size appears to be approximately 7.5- 8 as close as I can tell. Hi. For sale an antique blue& white art deco Egyptian type necklace. Art deco is from 1910 to 1930 made with geometric lines and bright colors. It is old. It has chips, a few little ones on the front and a bigger one on the back. The back has not been varnished it is not smooth like the front. It has been re strung and one of the pieces has been glued together. see the pictures) It could stand to be restrung again it is floppy it needs to be tighter but it does hang right. I have know idea what this is made of. The pieces have all been cut and made by hand but it does not turn yellow with simichrome. When I use simichrome the blue dye comes off. It measures about 6 1/4 inches from top to bottom and about 9 3/4 inches across. The photos are very representative of the piece. The first photo is the"front" and the last the"back. It's dry and fragile. And extreme care has been taken handling it and will be taken packing and shipping it. EGYPTIAN EASTERN ANTIQUE STERLING SILVER SNUFF BOX 1943 LARGE 3 INCHES
A beautiful Middle Eastern silver snuff box. It is hallmarked with Egyptian hallmarks showing it is a minimum 900 grade- note the middle symbol is that of a cat this was introduced in 1946. Where as the final symbol is in Arabic, up until 1940 this final mark was a Roman numeral- hence it can be accurately dated to between 1940-1946( I am pretty sure the precise date is 1943-1944) It has been beautifully hand made being finely engraved. It is in super condition being free from dings splits holes and repairs- just light scratches inside but probably from when it was made. It is a good sized example measures a touch over 2 inches(5.2cms) across by a fraction under 3 inches(7.5cms) across by 0.75 inches(2.1cms) tall and weighs 73 grams. A high quality beautiful piece.
