Depicting the head of Heracles, was cut on a very high relief- it quickly broke and degenerated into a large blob of silver, sometimes with the neck-line and the nose discernable. This does not seem to have stopped the moneyers from continuing to use the dies, and the coins continued to be minted with the completely broken obverse die. This piece comes from an apperant hoard sold by CNG. The entire hoard was struck from only a few sets of dies, and all coins imitated the coins of Philiip III. Here's a very nice North African Sahara Desert DECORATED CLAY SPINDLE WHORL or BEAD. It's 7/8 in. tall and 7/8 in. in diameter. It has incised circular and linear decorations. Some of which still retain some of the original white pigment. It is in near perfect condition. It's made of fired black clay. It may have served as a decorative BEAD or, more likely, as a SPINDLE WHORL mounted on a narrow shaft and used to spin plant fibers or sheep's wool into thread for making rugs or clothing. It dates from around 800 AD to 1000 AD. The 6th photo above shows a typical area of the Sahara Desert where these artifacts are found!
