A finely carved ancient Egyptian rock crystal scarab beetle amulet. Dating to the Late Period, 664- 332 BC. Schematically rendered. The oval body with head, thorax and wing-case clearly depicted. Pierced longitudinally in antiquity for attachment to a collar or necklace. Traces of bitumen remain within the creases and perforation. Though faience and steatite scarab amulets are commonly encountered. Rock crystal examples such as this are far rarer. The scarab( kheper) beetle was one of the most popular amulets in ancient Egypt because the insect was a symbol of both rebirth and the sun god Ra. Ancient Egyptians were highly superstitious. This Egyptian Scarab seal is in fine condition. With no major damage or cracks. It measures 2 inches long, 1 1/4 inches wide and 3/4 of an inch high. I have included images of the seal all round and hope you can see there is some rubbing, wear to the glaze. Scarabs were popular amulets in ancient Egypt. They do survive in large numbers and their inscriptions are an important source of information for archeologists and historians. In ancient Egypt the Scarab beetle was a symbol of eternity. This seal came to me from a private collection. Which included Roman and Greek coins and part terracotta figures. An interesting and decorative seal to add to your collection. This listing is for an ancient 2500 year-old(688-332 BC) carved steatite stone scarab beetle bead from Egypt. It measures 13.9 mm x 10.4 mm x 7.6 mm. The bead was recovered from an old art deco bracelet(mounted not strung) And has some old, but not ancient, wear to the edges. Where the opaque. Heavily oxidized surface is worn through, a semi-translucent green can be seen in the stone. The hole is drilled from both sides. And tapers slightly at the middle(bi-conically drilled) and there is a slight crook in the center where the two holes meet. The reverse shows a hieroglyph. Overall excellent condition. Ancient Egyptian Scarab Beetle Jewelry Box King Tut Tutankhamen
This item was purchased from an estate sale about 28 years ago. I was told the box was a museum replica copied from an Ancient Egyptian artifact found in King Tutankhamen's tomb. I have no idea how old the box is- i.e. when it was made- but I'm guessing it was made in the 50s or 60s. It's hand painted with gold leaf(as far as I know. I never had it appraised) and the gold leaf appears to be intact. It's looks perfect from the outside. Inside there is a chip on one of the edges and the red felt that lines the bottom is a little dirty from 28 years of holding collectible coins. The bottom is painted red and is dirty as well. Again as expected from being used and on displayed for almost thirty years. The box is 6" long. 3 1/2" wide, and 4" high. It weighs about 2 lbs. Formerly in the possession of the Metropolitan Museum. A beautiful selection of ancient Egyptian beads and scarab dating from the New Kingdom, Third Intermediate Period& Late Period, 1479- 332 BC, restrung to create an attractive bracelet. The bracelet strung with a range of beads; from dark hardstones. Green glass and vibrant faience nefer and heart amulets. Near the centre lies a steatite scarab, the base inscribed with hieroglyphs. These beads were all most likely excavated during the Metropolitan Museum’s explorations in the early 1900’s. It is clear however that they date to different periods in Egyptian history; for example. Nefers of this style were particularly common during the 18th dynasty. Where they were used in openwork collars, whilst the scarab appears to be a Late Period example. Carefully strung together they are a lovely ... moreexample of ancient jewellery styles. Beautifully illustrating the Egyptian penchant for vibrant colours(which they associated with the light of the gods) and the mingling of religious protection(amulets) with personal adornment. There is a cartouche between and above the figures which should be the name of the king, but I can't find it in the kings list. It reads from top to bottom RA or sun god, DJU which means MOUNTAIN or ABYDOS(an ancient Egyptian city) and MER which means CANAL or LOVE. It could read RA, beloved of ABYDOS, or something like that. This could be an obscure king that hasn't been discovered yet, making the Scarab possibly quite valuable! This is an amazing piece of Ancient Egyptian History.
