Her daughter Ariadne was Empress consort of first Zeno and then Anastasius I. Verina was the maternal grandmother of Leo II. Family The origins of Verina and her brother Basiliscus are unknown. The first barbarian King of Italy. 3] The theory relies on passage 209.1 in the fragmentary chronicle of John of Antioch. A 7th century monk. The chronicler has been tentatively identified with John of the Sedre. Syrian Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch from 641 to 648. 4] The passage records the assassination of Armatus by Onoulphus. Based on interpretation Odoacer was brother to either Onoulphus alone or to both men. The second interpretation was introduced by Krautschick and has gained the support of(among others) Alexander Demandt and Patrick Amory. Armatus was identified as nephew of Verina and Basiliscus in other Byzantine sources. Including a hagiography of Daniel the Stylite[5] and the Suda. The theory would make both Onoulphus and Odoacer nephews of Verina and Basiliscus. 3] However a counterargument to the theory is given by Penny Macgeorge in her own study Late Roman Warlords(2

The martial Romans considered him second in importance only to Jupiter(their main god) His festivals were held in March(named for him) and October. As the word Mars has no Indo-European derivation. It is most likely the Latinised form of the agricultural Etruscan god Maris. Initially Mars was a Roman god of fertility and vegetation and a protector of cattle. Fields and boundaries and farmers. In the second century BC, the conservative Cato the Elder advised"For your cattle. For them to be healthy, make this sacrifice to Mars Silvanus you must make this sacrifice each year" Mars later became associated with battle as the growing Roman Empire began to expand. And he came to be identified with the Greek god Ares. Unlike his Greek counterpart. Mars was generally revered and rivaled Jupiter as the most honoured god. He was also the tutelary god of the city of Rome. As

Crowned by Victory who flies above. Numismatic Note: Most likely refers to Julius Caesar's victory over the Gauls and Vercingetorix. In 52 BC another. Larger revolt erupted in Gaul, led by Vercingetorix. Vercingetorix managed to unite the Gallic tribes and proved an astute commander, defeating Caesar in several engagements, but Caesar's elaborate siege-works at the Battle of Alesia finally forced his surrender. Despite scattered outbreaks of warfare the following year, Gaul was effectively conquered. ... morePlutarch claimed that the army had fought against three million men during the Gallic Wars, of whom one million died, and another million were enslaved. The Romans subjugated 300 tribes and destroyed 800 cities. However, in view of the difficulty in finding accurate counts in the first place, Caesar's propagandistic purposes, and the common exaggeration of numbers in ancient texts, the stated totals of enemy combatants are likely to be too high. Ancient Copper Roman Byzantine Earrings Viking-era with New Copper Wire Wrap
Here is an ancient pair of copper bronze earrings of possible Roman or Byzantine design and origin. They are from Rus-Viking settlem ent. The copper is quite malleable and the hoop s are slightly bent. The bell-shaped copper(and silvered) ornaments are very fragile and w ere falling off the hoops because some of the wire was gone. I have made them wearable by wrapping them with some pure copper wire in the same manner(which is removable) The hoop wires on these earrings are very fine. So if you have typical-g au ge pierc ed ears. The earrings are wearable. Th ese earrings were found by a metal detector in an ancient Viking settlement along the Baltic Sea in Latvia. Maybe a trade item brought back from viking travels. I have a passion for ancient Viking-era artefacts. I love Baltic amber. Ancient bronze artefacts, and I have far more than ... moreI can wear in my collection; watch for more necklaces, rings, earrings, and bracelets.

Paleolithic items of adornment have been unearthed that date back 75.000-100,000 years. It is theorized that jewelry originated as a purely functional item used to fasten animal hides together allowing them to be worn as clothing. Findings suggest that jewelry making became more prevalent over 40.000 years ago as mankind migrated from Africa and the Middle East ... moreinto continental Europe. Early necklaces and bracelets were made from readily available materials such as bone, teeth, shells and stone strung together using twine from animal sinew or catgut. The forging of copper some 7.000 years ago allowed metal to be utilized as a material to craft jewelry. The smelting of copper and tin to make the alloy bronze heralded the advent of the Bronze Age some 5.000-6,000 years ago. It is conceivable that metal workers used their knowledge of metallurgy to craft items of adornment as well as tools and weapons. Jewelry has served(and continues to serve) three basic roles. As an ornament it attracts attention and could be used as a testament to hunting prowess or more general attributes. As an amulet holding supernatural power it protected the wearer against physical harm. Warded off evil and healed ailments. As society evolved it also became a symbol of wealth or social standing. Rings were extremely popular among the Romans. Their faith in the curative and protective powers attributed to some stones(as well as shapes and images) provided additional incentive to wear these amulets on their fingers. They are descendants of the Trojan prince and refugee Aeneas. And are fathered by the god Mars or the demi-god Hercules on a royal Vestal Virgin. Rhea Silvia. Whose uncle exposes them to die in the wild. They are found ... moreby a she-wolf who suckles and cares for them. The twins are eventually restored to their regal birthright, acquire many followers and decide to found a new city. Romulus wishes to build the new city on the Palatine Hill; Remus prefers the Aventine Hill. They agree to determine the site through augury. Romulus appears to receive the more favourable signs but each claims the results in his favour. In the disputes that follow. Remus is killed. Ovid has Romulus invent the festival of Lemuria to appease Remus' resentful ghost. Romulus names the new city Rome. After himself, and goes on to create the Roman Legions and the Roman Senate. He adds citizens to his new city by abducting the women of the neighboring Sabine tribes. Which results in the combination of Sabines and Romans as one Roman people. Rome rapidly expands to become a dominant force, due to divine favour and the inspired administrative, military and political leadership of Romulus. In later life Romulus becomes increasingly autocratic, disappears in mysterious circumstances and is deified as the god Quirinus. The divine persona of the Roman people. The legend of Romulus and Remus encapsulates Rome's ideas of itself

Æ 3. 3.64g. 18mm. Struck under CONSTANTINE I. the Great" as Emperor and son as Caesar. ROME MINT. Struck c. 321 AD. Obverse: CRISPVS NOB CAES. Laureate head right. R everse: CAESARVM NOSTRORVM. VOT X in wreath, RS in exergue(mint mark = Rome) Extremely Fine. Dark~near black patina. Ref. RIC VII 240. The EXECUTION of CRISPUS on Orders of his Father CONSTANTINE the Great Crispus was the main heir to the throne at the time as his half brothers were far too young and inexperienced. Crispus nominally served as Caesar in the eastern empire from 317 to 324 A.D. and helped his father against the hostilities of the junior emperor Licinius. Crispus ... morewas young. Energetic and extremely popular with the troops due to his strategic abilities and the victories to which he had led the Roman legions. His personality and popularity led to his early death. His stepmother. Fausta, began a conspiracy against Crispus who was an obstacle to her ambition for her own children by the Emperor Constantine. Constantine was persuaded to believe the false accusations of treason against Crispus by Fausta. Crispus was executed by his father's orders. Together with Caesar Licinius, the son of Constantine's favorite sister in 326AD. Helena, the aged mother of Constantine, undertook to avenge her grandson Crispus. She managed to avenge Crispus when Fausta was finally proved to be unfaithful to her husband, and put to death, with many of her friends and followers. The terrible scenes within the palace recalled to the Roman people the memory of Nero and Caligula. The three sons of Fausta, Constantine, Constantius and Constans, were now the heirs of the throne of Constantine the Great. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OUR GUARANTEE: All illustrations are of the actual item offered.
