Colima Dog This is a wonderful Colima figural dog vessel. As found in a local estate and believed to be an ancient piece from Western Mexico, approximately ... moretwo thousand years old. The dog is fat- or pregnant- with a hollow body in aggressive stance with tail that forms a spout. The dog's eyes and mouth are incised into the clay. Dog effigies such as this were buried in tombs in the belief that dogs were an important guide into the afterlife of the deceased. Both of the dog's ears are chipped; one with minor loss. The other more significantly. Two legs have been re-glued; the repairs are rough and amateur, and the break lines appear to have had some loss and are not well-aligned. The burnished reddish brown exterior is mottled and veined. And the interior is encrusted with mineral sediment. The dog came to me without information on its history or provenance. But shows many indications of its age. It's a fascinating piece that is sure to complement any collection. Two legs repaired somewhat roughly. One ear is broken. The other is chipped. Other expected wear. Burnished exterior, rough interior with sediment deposits. 9 3/8" long. 6" high, 5" across[ p e n c i l p o i n t e r Shipping? FREE via USPS Priority International Shipping? TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Chinese Bronzes by Mario Bussagli. ... moreNOTE: We have 75.000 books in our library, almost 10,000 different titles. Odds are we have other copies of this same title in varying conditions, some less expensive, some better condition. We might also have different editions as well(some paperback, some hardcover, oftentimes international editions) If you don’t see what you want, please contact us and ask. We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title. DESCRIPTION: Softcover. UK) Littlehampton(1974) 158 pages. The origins of bronze-working in China are mysterious and deeply rooted in ancient Chinese myths. Metallurgy in all its forms seemed miraculous to the ordinary man. And every object, sword or vessel, was thought to possess a spirit of its own. Those who worked with metals seemed to be wizards with supernatural powers, all the more so because the melting operation was preceded, accompanied, and followed by religious ceremonies, exorcism, and magic rites. Mario Bussagli describes the background to the production of Chinese bronzes in fascinating detail. And explains the significance of the different types of ritual vessel and the symbolism of the stylized decoration. The fine illustrations include objects from the Shang, Chou, Han and T'ang periods, and each is described fully in the accompanying notes. CONDITION: LIKE NEW. Unread oversized softcover(and in that sense"new" UK) Littlehampton(1974) 158 pages. Unblemished except for VERY slight edge and corner shelf wear to the covers. Pages are pristine; clean. Ancient Egyptian Canopic Jar False Canopic Jars pottery
Click HERE for our other AUCTIONS Dummy Canopic Jar. False Canopic Jars- Egyptian Art Click on the thumbnails to view enlargements A nice"dummy" or"false" limestone canopic jar! Shows nice workmanship even though the tradition of using Canopic jars for the organs started to cease by this period as the organs were being wrapped and placed back into the body. Sometimes these"dummy" Canopic jars were placed in a Canopic box and other times they were placed within holes in the floor. This example is intact said for missing section to one side as seen in the photo. Made of a single piece of limestone. The top is contiguous with the bottom and there is no inner cavity. During the Third Intermediate Period, between the 21st and 25th dynasties, a change in embalming practices led to the temporary abandonment of canopic ... morejars. During mummification certain organs were removed. Such as the lungs, the liver, the stomach, and the intestines. Taken out, they were embalmed separately, and stored in canopic jars. These vessels were named after a Greek sailor named Canopus, who is believed to be buried at Canopus(Abuqir) in the western Delta and worshiped there in the form of a human-headed jar. Each of the organs was identified by the jar they lay in. The Four Sons of Horus were used as keep of the organs: the liver with Imsety(man's head) the lungs with Hapy(baboon's head) the stomach with Duamutef(jackal's head) and the intestines with Qebehsenuef(falcon's head) The four gods were in turn placed under the protection of four goddesses, Imsety being associated with Isis, Hapy with Nephthys, Duamutef with Neith, and Qebehsenuef with Selkis. This example however was only used for symbolic reasons and would have never made it to become a functional jar. For reference see: Reisner. Canopics, Published in 1967. Ancient Chinese Han Dynasty Pottery Ghostly Figure - 206 BC
An ancient Chinese painted terracotta figure. Dating to the Han Dynasty, 206 BC- 220 AD. Likely depicting a member of the Han court. The flowing, linear silhouette produces a ghostly visual effect. The facial features have been reduced to the essence of form, with a narrow nose and dotted eyes. In antiquity this piece would have reflected the elegance and orthodoxy of the Han court. Yet today. The ravages of time have caused this fascinating artefact to take on an altogether far different aesthetic; haunting, almost ghostly in its appearance, it appears as if a metaphor for the passing of time itself. Condition: Good. Unrestored, with widespread pigment preservation. Height: 9 7/8 inches. Provenance: This piece is from a large number of mostly Chinese antiques. Purchased from a shop clearance in the south of England. These items were all ... moreexhibited at London department store Fortnum& Mason, approximately 15 years ago. Very Large Ancient Chinese Pottery Han Dynasty Figure of a Boar / Pig - 206 BC
A very large ancient Chinese Han Dynasty terracotta figure of a boar or pig. Dating to approximately 206 BC- 220 AD. The animal is robustly modelled. With a bristled coat and prominent spinal crest, the tail swept upwards. The facial features are prominent, emphasising the power of this physical animal. This fascinating piece has an arresting visual appeal. Its powerful build and fierce look suggest it may be a wild boar. Nevertheless, its appearance as part of a ming-qi collection would likely indicate that it was included as part of an agricultural scene. And was therefore at least partly domesticated. From ancient times. The Chinese believed that life after death was similar to life in this world. Therefore, they provided in their tombs the things they would require to maintain the status and style to which they were accustomed. The inclusion ... moreof animals within such contexts bear witness to the importance of raising livestock in ancient China. Though the practice of providing model animals was a common one, it is far rarer to encounter figures of this large size. Xunzi. A follower of Confucius wrote that: one adorns the dead as though they were still living. And sends them to the grave with forms symbolic of life. Length: 18 inches. Condition: Very good. Possible minor restoration. Provenance: Ex. US private collection. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described. Beautiful Ancient Chinese Tang Dynasty Glazed Pottery Bactrian Camel - 706 AD
A superb example of an ancient Chinese pottery camel. Among the most iconic of all ancient Chinese ceramics, dating to the early to mid Tang Dynasty, around 706- 755 AD. A wonderfully vibrant depiction. The camel is shown standing upon a rectangular base, raising its head to bray. With wide eyes and exposed teeth, the entire piece exudes a sense of life and motion. Decorated throughout with a thick amber glaze, which shines almost golden in the light. Here we can see the true essence of the Tang style. The artist has masterfully captured the inner spirit of the animal, and one can truly feel a sense of personality emerging from the fabric of the piece. The kilns of the Tang Dynasty broke free from earlier traditions. Employing rich, vibrant glazes. Whether this reflected a change in fashion or technology is not known, however, Tang glazes ... moreare some of the most admired of the entire ancient world. The artistic splendour of the Tang Dynasty was made possible by its vast wealth, built on trade along the great Silk Route, between China and the cities of the distant west. Bactrian camels such as the creature depicted here travelled along the treacherous deserts of the Silk Route. Laden with goods. It was during the Tang Dynasty that trade between east and west reached its golden age, and the Chinese empire welcomed foreign cultures from all across the known world. Above all, it was these hardy camels that came to symbolise the prosperity of the Silk Route, and by extension the Chinese civilisation itself. Encapsulated in this stunning piece is a microcosm of the Tang Dynasty; its wealth. Cosmopolitanism and artistic vibrancy. Please note: A scan of the original Oxford Authentication Thermoluminescence test accompanies this piece. Which scientifically dates it to the Tang Dynasty. Height: 21 ½ inches. Width: 17 inches. Condition: Excellent. Some minor restorations and hairline crack to upper lip. Beautiful glaze preservation, this is a well preserved example. Provenance: Ex. US private collection. Acquired years ag

Its harbour was one of the main on the for the export of cereals. Fish, and slaves to Greece, and for the import of Attic goods to. Olbia and other Greek colonies along the north coast of the Black Sea in the 5th century B.C. The site of the Greek colony covers the area of fifty hectares and its fortifications form an isosceles triangle about a mile long and half a mile wide. The region was also the site of several villages(modern Victorovka and Dneprovskoe) which may have been settled by Greeks. As for the town itself. The lower town(now largerly submerged by the ... moreBug river) was occupied chiefly by the dockyards and the houses of artisans. The upper town was a main residential quarter, composed of square blocks and centered on the agora. The town was ringed by a defensive stone wall with towers. The upper town was also the site of the first settlement on the site in the archaic period. There is evidence that the town itself was laid out over a grid plan from the 6th century- one of the first after the town of Smyrna. By the later period of settlement. The city also included an acropolis and, from the 6th century B.C. a religious sanctuary. In the early 5th century, a temple to Apollo Delphinios was also built on the site. History Archaic and Classical periods The Greek colony. Highly important commercially and endured for a millennium. The first evidence of Greek settlement at the site comes from Berezan Island where pottery has been found dating from the late 7th century. It is possible that it had been the site of an earlier native settlement and may even have been a peninsular rather than an island in antiquity. It is not thought that the Berezan town survived until the 5th century B.C. when it was either absorbed into

Ancient Syro Hittite Pottery Near Eastern Horse And Rider Figure - 1150 BC
An ancient near eastern Syro-Hittite horse and rider figure. Dating to approximately 1500 BC. This rare terracotta horse and rider is of highly stylised form. Both the animal and rider are shown with the deeply incised eyes typical of Syro-Hittite figures. With bird-like face and crown of hair falling across the forehead. The rider clings tenuously to the horses neck. The short stubby legs, widely spaced eyes and almost snout-like mouth of the horse make it an abstract, almost comical depiction. Being great horsemen allowed the ancestors of the Syro-Hittites to travel and conquer places far from their remote and rugged homelands in Asia Minor. To represent the importance of this animal in ancient Syrian society. The image of the horse and rider was prominent in art and architecture from the period, often adoring the monumental arches and ... moreruins of their lost cities. Often these were powerful warrior images, however this piece is different; here we have a more touching, human depiction, the scene appears light hearted, almost like a child's toy. Height: 3 ¼ inches. Length: 2 ¾ inches. Condition: Good. Restored from fragments. Provenance: Ex. Royal Athena Gallery. New York, 1966. Subsequently in the collection of a New York City family. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described. PRE COLUMBIAN FIGURE MEXICO FEMALE POTTERY CLAY 7 INCHES AUTHENTIC ANCIENT
PRE COLUMBIAN FEMALE FIGURE POTTERY MEXICO AUTHENTIC ANCIENT This Mexican Pre Columbian pottery female figure is 7 inches high and is possibly a variant of Jalisco or Nayarit but I am not an expert and cannot be sure of the culture. It will not stand by itself and is supported for the photos. Iti s missing an arm. Lower leg and foot and another foot. or whatever it had at the ends of the legs) The arm is complete with no hand just a rounded structure. Ears and nose are abnormally large with the head sloping backwards at an angle. Minute reflective crystaline structures in the clay and dark areas that seem to be manganese deposits. There is a slight chip on the back of the head. This is an authentic figure and not a reproduction and I have had it for over 40 years. Figure would look well mounted and standing upright.
Ancient Chinese Six Dynasties Terracotta Pottery Zodiac Horse Figure - 220 AD
A clay pottery ancient Chinese Zodiac horse figure. Dating to the Six Dynasties, 220-589 AD. This grey earthenware piece is a particularly charming and rare depiction. The sculpture captures the animal in strikingly abstract form. Stood with its impossibly small stubby legs beneath its substantive bulk. The head is lowered, with raised ears and large soulful eyes. With the innocent hint of a smile, this robustly modelled piece has a rustic quality that seemingly transcends age or culture. Legend has it that the Jade Emperor ordered the animals of the zodiac to race across a river. With the years on the calendar being named for each animal in the order that they arrived on the far bank. The horse appeared on course to take 6th place, however unbeknown to the horse, hidden on its hoof was the snake, whose sudden appearance gave the horse a ... morefright, thus making it fall back and giving the snake the 6th spot, while the horse placed 7th. Those born in the year of the horse are traditionally seen as idealistic and impulsive individuals who will always follow the beat of their own drum. The'Horse' years are: 1930. 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014. Condition: Good. Unrestored. Length: 4 ¼ inches. Provenance: Ex. British private collection. For a piece of very similar style but depicting a mouse. Please see the in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Please note: This is a genuine ancient Chinese figure. This piece is offered for sale without reserve to promote our extensive inventory of antiquities and ancient coins. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described. For added security we offer a full money-back guarantee if a recognized authority disputes the authenticity of any object sold.
