Ancient Egyptian"Sema Tawy Motif" Scarab and a Primitive Wadjet Eye and Bes Amulet_ 100% Genuine I have a steatite scarab with some of the blue/green glaze remaing on the face. The rounded back of the scarab has some smoothing of details due to wind and sand erosion. The flat base has the early style of the Sema Tawy unification of Upper and Lower Egypt motif showing the intertwining of a lotus plant and a papyrus plant. This motif was popular at the end of the Middle Kingdom Period ca. 1900 BC. There is a small hole on ne of the plants that occured when the craftsman was doing his engraving. It does not affect the beauty or value of this item. If you are not familiar with the motif just Google"Sema Tawy Motif" and look at some of the images. The scarab measures 14mm x 9mm. Isis is depicted seated on her throne with Horus straddling across her lap with his legs hanging over her left side. In this rare image Isis is fully clothed and not baring her breast for feeding. Egyptian bronze figure, poss. ancient with later restorations, 19thC collection
Egyptian bronze figure of the goddess Isis with inscription around the base. We bought this recently in a group of Egyptian antiquities acquired in the late 19th Century from an auction in Yorkshire. 13.1 x 2.5 cms. Why am I selling for 1p on ebay? Because the crown appears to be a later addition and the figure has been over-cleaned and details re-incised in places; however. Taking into account a fair amount of 19thC"enhancement" the fundamentals of the figure appear to be ancient- please see the image of the underside of the base where the original patina/encrustation has not been removed. Also, the inscription around the base is very tidy, unlike some of the re-incised details on the back of the wig. Ancient Egyptian Faience Amulet of Isis Nursing Horus - 664 BC
An ancient Egyptian turquoise faience statue of the Goddess Isis suckling the infant Horus. Dating to Egypt's Late Period, approximately 664 B.C. A particularly fine and attractive example. A tender and emotive artefact. This faience sculpture merges the traditions of pharaonic Egypt with the artistic style of the Ptolemaic period. Isis is shown seated, nursing the infant Horus upon her lap. Atop the tripartite wig on the goddess's head is the throne hieroglyph that represents her name. Following ancient conventions for indicating childhood, Horus is naked and wears a single lock of hair on the right side of his head. For the ancient Egyptians the image of the goddess Isis suckling her son Horus was a powerful symbol of rebirth that was carried into the Ptolemaic period and later transferred to Rome. Where the cult of the goddess ... morewas established. Family groups of deities became very popular in the Late Period. And were placed in temples by wealthy individuals. Isis and Horus, represented in this fascinating piece, were important protective deities. Isis was revered for her skills with magic, sufficient to revive Osiris for long enough to conceive a child, whilst Horus was the god of war and the hunt. This piece would have been worn in antiquity in order to invoke the might and protection of these powerful figures. Three Ancient Egyptian Coptic Christian Textiles - 200 AD
Three intricate and extremely rare ancient Egyptian Coptic Christian textiles. Dating to circa 200-400 A.D. In a simply remarkable state of preservation. These tapestry woven roundels would have once been worn by a Coptic Christian as part of a tunic or shawl, the classic garments of the late antique world. The upper and lower roundels depict a four pointed star in the centre. Encircled by a scene of flowers, creeping vines and geometric patterns in vibrant hues of red, green and gold. Only the oldest of fabrics, dating from the second through to the fifth centuries, show these most natural of forms. The artisan who produced this piece would have been highly influenced by the vegetal displays often seen in Byzantine floor mosaics of the period. The central roundel is of a particularly rare type and reflects a more intricate motif. An eight ... morepointed star lies at its heart, surrounded by animal figures, plants and an upturned human palm. This seemingly naturalistic scene is imbued with early Christian symbology. Christian art was necessarily and deliberately furtive and ambiguous during this period, using imagery that was seemingly innocuous but had a special meaning for believers. The intricately woven fish has particular significance; ancient Christians, during their persecution by the Roman Empire in the first few centuries after Christ, used the fish symbol to mark meeting places, tombs and to distinguish friends from foes. This piece would appear to reflect that ancient tradition. The upturned palm may be a depiction of orans, an ancient form of prayer often seen in early Christian art whereby the hands were outstretched sideways, palms up. The richness of design and the magnificence of the colours of Coptic textiles have long been recognized. Indeed the designs and motifs of Coptic and Byzantine textiles went on to influence the later visual repertoire of the early Islamic period.
