This was important as all Ancient Egyptians might be required to perform menial manual labour in the afterlife, if summoned. Ancient Egyptian Faience Ushabti Figure Tomb Statue Hieroglyphs Late Period
Up for auction is an ancient Egyptian Faience Ushabti funerary figure made out of clay. I believe it is a Figure from the Egyptian Late Period(~664-332 B.C.The figure contains hieroglyphics on the front and is holding what looks to be a Pick and a Hoe at its shoulders. It is a molded figure with green blue glaze(faience) and has fairly good detailing and pleasant features. I've looked at a lot of sites that show many reproductions of these figures and this one doesn't fall with in any of the categories I saw. The Ushabti figure is fairly thin. Detailed and has appropriate deposits on the surface. There is slight loss on the right hand and a couple of holes that are part of the casting process, but there are no breaks or repairs. I certainly am no expert on Egyptian artifacts and this does not come with a guarantee of authenticity ... moreso please examine all of the photos carefully and ask as many questions as you need to. This is a strand of authenic ancient Egyptian faince mummy beads. Faince beads were used both for everyday wear and woven into bead netting covers in tombs. The peak of production for the faience beads was the eighteenth dynasty 1567 BC to 1320 BC. This type of faeince bead has been made since 2600BC. In 1956-1957 the Metropolitan Museum Of Art in New York City had an excess of ancient Egyptian artifacts which they sold to the public. These beads were part of that disposal of artifacts. Mummy beads are tubular faience beads. These are being sold as loose beads and are not strung as a necklace and do not have a clasp. The average size is 6mm x 3.5mm diameter. 150 beads on the 32 inch strand. The colors are tan, creme, pale green and grey. Formerly in the possession of the Metropolitan Museum. A beautiful selection of ancient Egyptian beads and scarab dating from the New Kingdom, Third Intermediate Period& Late Period, 1479- 332 BC, restrung to create an attractive bracelet. The bracelet strung with a range of beads; from dark hardstones. Green glass and vibrant faience nefer and heart amulets. Near the centre lies a steatite scarab, the base inscribed with hieroglyphs. These beads were all most likely excavated during the Metropolitan Museum’s explorations in the early 1900’s. It is clear however that they date to different periods in Egyptian history; for example. Nefers of this style were particularly common during the 18th dynasty. Where they were used in openwork collars, whilst the scarab appears to be a Late Period example. A finely modeled genuine Ancient Egyptian faience shabti. Dating to the 30th Dynasty(381-343 BC) The figure standing mummiform. Wearing tripartite wig and beard of Osiris, holding the hoe and pick, seed basket over the left shoulder. A frontal T-column of hieroglyphs and a back pillar to the rear. There are six cat beads plus a number of tubular and small yellow beads in between. We consulted a bead expert who said. The"cats" have the design of the late period, the back of them is much more carved as opposed to stiff as in the ... moreearly periods. My guess is about 500-300 BC. The small yellow beads that are on the necklace are newer. The strand(just the beads themselves) measures about 11 1/4" inches long, with the cats being about 7/8" tall.
