Condition: Unspecified Location: Glen Mills, United States This is an English. Circa 1820, six drawer chest or dresser. It is made with thick, bookmatched mahogany veneer over pine, double raised panel sides, ... moreand fluted columns resting on strong spade feet. The original Egyptian Revival gilt brasses celebrated Britain's 1798 defeat of Napoleon in The Battle of the Nile, and the subsequent discoveries of Egyptian art and culture. The chest is 50" high, 40 3/8" wide, and 23 1/8" deep. Five drawers are approximately 6 3/4" high, and the bottom drawer is 8 1/2" high. I cannot find a maker's identification, but the frame and drawers are hand numbered in pencil. This chest was professionally refinished approximately 30 years ago, and it has been used irregularly since that time. Small areas in the secondary wood of the drawers were filled at the time of refinishing, but this appears to have been done for cosmetic purposes only. There is no movement in any of the joinery including the legs, and the drawers work very well for a chest of this age. As is appropriate, I suspect the chest with drawers weighs 250 lbs. There are age appropriate scratches and bumps here and there, and particularly on the top and top drawer face. Also, there is long-term wear to the veneer at the location of the ring pulls. Many of the hardware posts(which hold the ring pulls) have been replaced, and the two original posts on the bottom drawer are a bit loose. Further, some of the nuts that fasten the pulls to the drawers have been replaced. Lastly, one of the drawer locks is missing, as is the key. I would recommend Ball and Ball, Exton for the repair, replacement and or keying of the locks. I believe the clean lines and strong profiles of this chest exemplify good Regency furniture. Hinged to reveal a fitted dimension as shown above. We searched extensively on the internet to find information about this piece of history and all we could find is as explained below: Hirschfelder& Meaney was established in 1893. With offices and salesrooms at No. 22 Sutter Street. Its factory was located at Twentieth and Florida streets in San Francisco and covers an area of eleven thousand square feet. The San Francisco Call Newspaper of November 16th 1911 listed their address to be on 519 Market Street and another internet search revealed they moved to Battery Street around 1913. Hirschfelder& Meaney was also listed in the 1926 San Francisco chamber of commerce publication as a chest maker with address at 36 battery street San Francisco. Earlier edition of same publication published in 1910 listed same company’s address to be 519 Market Street There are documentations published between 1910 and 1926 that made reference to this company. I have not seen any reference to the company after 1926. This however does not mean one is not out there and for this reason we listed this chest as mid to early 1920.
