ANTIQUE VINTAGE CANE UMBRELLA PLANT STAND OCTAGONAL MAHOGANY VICTORIAN BEDPOST
24" tall. 11" diameter cane or umbrella stand. Octagonal column is constructed of solid mahogany boards, molding around the bottom is also mahogany, four feet are veneered. I think that this stand was made from the bottom section of a mid-Victorian bed post from a tester bed. If you are familiar with beds made by cabinetmakers like Mallard or Lee, the octagonal form was very popular. For whatever reason(fashion, low ceilings) a bed was taken apart and the lowest section of a bedpost was repurposed as a hall stand with the addition of four scroll feet- that look like they came from a Victorian footstool and two handles on the side that look like sections of molding. The reconfiguration was not done recently- the nails holding the feet in show some surface rust and the screws attaching the bottom panel are not new either. The reimagining ... moreof the bedpost was probably done in the mid 20th century or before. It makes an interesting history and I think it makes a very handsome and impressive looking stand for your canes or umbrellas. It would make a great stand for a fern or other houseplant too. The finish on the wood is old. The mahogany has a lovely dark red color. There is finish wear and some scratches and marks, the veneer is quite worn on the feet. There is a split on one of the eight panels that would be an easy fix with wood glue and some strap clamps. COPPER AND WOOD UMBRELLA STAND Acquired at an estate sale on the north shore of Long Island is this hand tooled copper covered wood framed umbrella/cane stand. The front features an old England tavern scene on front. Textured sides and back. All copper panels are securely in place attached to the wood box frame. There is a metal draw with a black finish that slides out the back on the bottom to catch dirt. Debris, ice, water, etc… from the umbrella or canes placed in the stand. Handles on each side are secured but a little loose. I tried to tighten the screws but they seem to be firmly in place. The new owner can leave the functioning handles“as is” or try to tighten them down more. Measurements: 21 inches tall. About 23 inches long(from handle to handle. 18 inches long from side to side) and 6 ¼ inches wide. The openings measure 5 inches ... moreby 8 inches. Plenty of patina to the copper and wood. There are no hallmarks as to the maker. Legs are cherry wood stain, base is dark walnut, brass overlay has patina. Condition*stain is worn and nicked in places, a fairly large scratch(not deep) is on the bottom front, the brass has patina and is rubbed/scratched, stand is a tiny bit wobbly as it is light fairly light weight. VTG MACHINE Industrial AGE umbrella cane STAND brass cast iron GERMANY unique
Machine age. Mid century modern, industrial umbrella or cane stand made of cast iron and brass. The base is an unusual shield or triangle shape. Very heavy solid decorative and unique piece. I purchased this piece at an estate sale about 10 years ago. It is marked on the bottom with a G and an E inside of the G. Below it is the number 2. At the opposite side it is marked ges.gesche which I believe means there was a German patent involved. The G may stand for the Giesserei Foundry in Germany. The rust is all surface and could easily be cleaned and painted. As you can see in the photos there is still quite a bit of the original silver metallic hammered finish remaining. A very common finish for the machine age era. One of the three circular brass rods occasionally pops out of the center sprocket but just needs to be pushed back in place. The ... morebrass is a thick 1/4" across when you measure the rod from side to side. Total height to top of the handle is 26 inches. The triangular base is approximately 8 inches across. This piece is very much in the style of Bosse. Hagenauer, Auboeck(Aubock) etc. but I am not an expert so do not know the exact age or to whom the design may be attributed.
