Book: ANTIQUE MAKE-DO PINCUSHIONS & OTHER ANTIQUES FOLK ART
Waste Not. Want Not. The Art of the Make-Do” By Donald P. Naetzker. Published by the author in 1986. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The record of a unique folk-art collection of mostly 19th-century“make-do’s–glass. Ceramics and other broken objects converted by thrifty and artful owners to a new purpose, or re-born with parts from something utterly different. Many of the objects take specific utilitarian forms- there are a number of lamps made up of partial glass lamps with glass and metal or wood bases or other parts added. Glass goblets and broken lamps also form the bases for a number of pincushions. Ceramics are usually repaired, a Staffordshire teapot with a carefully carved wooden handle, an 1820s scenic jug held together with artfully placed tin bands which also form a new decorative handle, and so on. Fascinating. ... moreDESCRIPTION: Softcover. 6”x9” Black& white and color illustrations. CONDITION NOTES: A little minor wear. But otherwise clean and nice, with a tight binding. The Year One. Art of the Ancient World. East and West” Edited by Elizabeth J. Milleker. Published by the Yale University Press in 2000. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Artworks of astonishing variety were being created in far-flung regions of the world in the Year One. In Europe. Celtic peoples excelled in intricate metalwork, and in Egypt a unique hybrid of Greco-Roman and age-old Egyptian styles predominated. East of the Mediterranean, Palmyra, Petra, the kingdoms of southern Arabia, and the mighty Parthian Empire produced a wide range of sculpture, ceramics, and precious metal objects, while in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India, a traveler would have discovered the eclectic arts of the Kushan Empire, where early Buddhist art incorporated occasional influences from Greece and Rome. Discussed here and seen in ... more149 color photographs are works from all these societies and also from China, Korea, Japan, and Mesoamerica. Ancient Jewelry, Antiques of the Nomads of Kazakhstan Scytho-Sakian Scythian
Of Gold and Grass: Nomads of Kazakhstan” Edited by Dr. Claudia Chang& Katharine S. Guroff. Published by the Foundation for International Arts and Education in 2007. DISCUSSION: This catalog. From an exhibition by the Foundation for International Arts and Education and the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan, presents 180 objects dating back as far as the 12th century BC—items of jewelry, weapons, riding tack, ceramics, and practical objects—in color plates, with some 50 additional drawings, maps, and photos. More than 2000 years ago, warriors and merchant caravans from faraway kingdoms—Persia, Syria, China and Greece—traveled along the Silk Road through what is now Kazakhstan. These travelers brought the art of their cultures, which was adopted and adapted by the people who lived along the route. Among these ... morewere the Scytho-Sakian people of southern Kazakhstan, the fabled Scythian horsemen. Objects from the Berel Kurgan, where archaeologists found the remains of two nobles, were on display for the first time in the United States. The two nobles were buried with 13 saddled and bridled horses, sacrificed 2300 years ago to serve them in the afterlife. In the traditional culture of the Kazakhs, all spaces are ornamented, from the interior of their yurts to their garments to the tack for their horses. To this people who first domesticated the horse, the act of decorating an object domesticates it as well, making even ordinary utensils and tools works of art and philosophy” DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 9”x12” 180 pages, color illustrations. MEDIEVAL ANTIQUES & ART OF BASEL CATHEDRAL -SILVER, TEXTILES, GOLD, ENAMELS
The Treasury of Basel Cathedral” By Timothy Husband. Published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art& the Yale University Press in 2001. DISCUSSION: The medieval Treasury of the Basel Minster miraculously survived earthquakes. Wars, iconoclasm, and the Reformation, only to be dispersed in the early nineteenth century. More than half of its holdings are now in the Historisches Museum Basel, while the remainder are in museum collections all over the world. This book presents more than seventy-five of these splendid ecclesiastical and secular objects from the Basel Minster, dating from the early eleventh through the early sixteenth century, spanning the Early Romanesque period to the Reformation. Most of the works are of gold and silver-many encrusted with precious stones, antique gems, or translucent enamels-but there are also textiles and ... moreobjects of hardstone, rock crystal, bronze, and wood, including the doors of the original storage cupboards. All are reproduced in full color and fully discussed. The four essays in the volume focus on the history of medieval Basel and on the function of cathedral treasuries, with particular emphasis on the Basel Treasury and its contents. Ancient Art & Antiques from Cyprus - Cesnola Collection
Ancient Art from Cyprus. The Cesnola Collection” By Vassos Karageorghis. Published in New York by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2000. DISCUSSION: The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is home to the largest collection of Cypriot antiquities outside of Cyprus. Largely because of the efforts of the museum's first director, Luigi Palma di Cesnola, who went to Cyprus in 1866 hoping to excavate works to rival the finds of Heinrich Schliemann at Troy. This gorgeously illustrated catalog presents some 500 objects from the prehistoric, Archaic, Classical/Hellenistic, and Roman periods in more than 300 color photographs of glass, stone sculpture, terra-cotta figurines, lamps, pottery, jewelry, and weapons. Here are delicate golden bracelets with lion-head finials, clay jugs decorated with animals and meticulous geometric motifs, and a ... morefour-foot-tall, pencil-thin bronze candelabrum that stands on three hoofed feet” DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9”x11” 305 pages, color illustrations, dust jacket. ISLAMIC ANTIQUES ARTS CRAFTS ARCHITECTURE & More! Spain Maghreb Iran Turkey
Islam. Art and Architecture” Edited by Markus Hattstein& Peter Delius. Published by H.F. Ullmann in 2004. DISCUSSION: Overflowing with hundreds of color photographs and reproductions. This book follows the historical development of the Islamic regions and their ruling dynasties, and illustrates their varied forms of artistic expression from the birth of the religion in the 7th century to the present day. Such basic architectural elements as the four-iwan layout or the minaret, seen in many diverse modes of execution, demonstrate the independent inventiveness of regional building traditions. In the decoration of buildings or of everyday objects, ornamentation—that most recognizable of all Islamic art forms—displays its endless creativity. In the restrained yet inventive brick and tile ornamentation of Uzbekistan, as well as in the bright, ... morenaturalistic arabesques of India and Iran, and the geometrical ornamentation of Spain and the Maghreb, the abundant forms of expression celebrate the riches and beauty of Allah's creation. This impulse also inspired the colorful and fantastical illuminations and calligraphy, sumptuous tapestries, and the extravagant metalwork, ceramics, and jewelry showcased here” DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9”x10.5” 623 pages, color illustrations, dust jacket. ANTIQUE JAPANESE ARTS INFLUENCE ON JAPONISM -WESTERN ANTIQUES & ARTS & CRAFTS
The Influence of Japanese Art on Design” By Hannah Sigur. Published by Gibbs Smith in 2008. DISCUSSION: Japonism- the Western craze for Japanese art and design. Ran rampant in late 19th century Europe and America, and leading companies including Rookwood, Gorham and Tiffany all took up the challenge to incorporate Japanese design and aesthetics into their wares. Illustrated with more than 200 photographs, this book explores the story of Japan as the catalyst of modern design in America's Gilded Age—the rapid industrialization of the late 19th century. The"Japan Craze" came at a time of radical change in the United States and Europe. Western culture was yearning for the values of a past it believed were embodied in Japanese traditional arts, and Japan felt the demand for modernity it saw embodied in the West. Hannah Sigur follows ... morethe transformation from traditionalism into modernism that marked the developments from the Aesthetic movement into Arts and Crafts and finally to Frank Lloyd Wright's vision” DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9.5”x10.5” 222 pages, color and black& white illustrations, dust jacket.
