It is about 82-3/4" tall, 24 to 26" wide(at different levels) and 15" deep. The Beveled Mirror is about 17 1/4" wide and 35" high and in very good condition for its age. There are 6 Coat, Cap Hooks, the two on top are Butterfly Hooks( unusual& rare) see picture 5, I have never seen these before or after we got this one) I don't know if they were on the Hall Tree from day one or if someone added them later, they are old and they compliment the attractive decorative carvings on top, plus they do match the cutout pattern above the seat perfectly.see picture 3) The Bench Seat has storage space under the lid. Hammer marks abound throughout the sturdy construction(weight, approximately 65 lbs. Unsigned. Circa 1925. Two of the leaves among those constituting the surround to the naturalistic rose at the top of the elliptical element below the mirror have recently been repaired. That is, the iron element representing a plant stem(approximately 1/8" diameter) with the leaves attached to it, was cleanly broken at its original weld point(i.e. basally) some years ago, and is now expertly repaired(re-welded, by a professional ironworker) The piece is 4" long, and both it and its point of attachment on the larger whole are without loss. This re-weld matches the others on the piece as regards size, shape and color. The hat hook on the far left and that on the far right are slightly loose. That is, they swivel on the rods that attach them to the frame. The mirror, held by four metal tabs on the back(one on each side) is not original; a small piece(approximately 1/2" square) of glass is missing in the upper right corner, though the mirror is covered around its edges by the wrought iron, and the missing piece is scarcely noticeable. He was a professor at Boston University for many years, and retired as emeritus professor of art history. Mr. Kirk has been a consultant curator for several historic house museums and a director of the Rhode Island Historical Society. He was the curator for three exhibits of Shaker furniture and materials and one on Connecticut furniture. He has written many articles and a number of books, mostly focusing on regional differences in American furniture, the relationship between English and American furniture, and Shaker design. Antique Canvas Sign MANASQUAN NEW JERSEY SHORE 1898 Advertising NJ Furniture
One-of-a-kind Antique Advertising Sign. Printed in black ink on sewn cotton canvas. Each side is approx. 78” x 34” with ties at either end. The sign was stenciled and sewn by the famous Ithaca Sign Works. Stanford-Crowell Co. of Ithaca, New York, c. 1898. The sign reads. WE BUY FURNITURE AND HOUSE FURNISHINGS. R.M. PURDY, OF MANASQUAN, N.J. This rare canvas advertising sign from the New Jersey Shore area is double-sided. So you will be receiving two signs, not just one. The sign is over 100 years old. With wear, holes, tears and discoloration from age and use. One corner of each side has particular wear. The sign also has four sewn reinforced holes by the manufacturer, two on each side, which may have been used for display purposes. Look at the photographs, let them be your guide. We think the sign is much nicer and in much better condition ... morethan can be shown on a computer screen. Both sides can be easily backed, making an incredible historic display piece(or two. Robert M. Purdy was a furniture merchant. Manasquan area undertaker, Ocean County Coroner, Member of the Town Council, Bd of Education, a Mason, and a Church Trustee. Purdy Furniture was located at Main and Broad Streets in Manasquan, NJ. The building had a frontage on Main Street of 60 feet and on Broad Street of 100 feet. The building itself was 3 stories high. The Purdy building and area was a focal point in Ocean County, NJ, and Manasquan in particular, at the end of the 19th/ beginning of the 20th centuries. In 1908 Mr. Purdy was sworn in as the elected Ocean County Coroner at Freehold. In 1909 he left the furniture business to be a full time undertaker and coroner. He bought a half interest in the Errickson building. Where his business was located. The new owner will receive a copy of the research on Mr. Purdy. His business, and Ithaca Sign Works.
