Antiques. Collectables, Paintings, Fine Ceramics and Glass 3 FRAMED 18 TH. CENTURY DUTCH DELFT MANGANESE TILES These three Dutch. Delft, manganese tiles are dated to around 1750. They make a superb set mounted in their frame. The ground is cream and design is in purplish brown colour. The scenes on the tiles are of the canal with windmill. Boats and farm or church with small designs in the corners. They are uniquely hand painted in this wonderfully naive style. The condition of all 3 tiles is particularly good for this age. There are a few frits and nibbles to the edge. Some crazing and the tile on the right is slightly brown on the top, this may be the result of old tobacco smoke. Each tile measures 13cm x 13 cm x 7mm(approximately) or 5¼ inches x 5¼ inches. I'm afraid the colour looks varied as I was having problems with my camera. Manganese is a mineral used since Egyptian times to stain glazes and bodies. The colour varies depending on the glaze. Lead glazes give a purplish brown colour. As with these tiles. Manganese mixed with iron in an alkaline glaze creates a rich black tone. Delftware tiles were very popular. Popular decorative motifs included landscapes and flowers. With smaller designs in each corner. In Britain early delftware copied the Dutch manganese palette. This is 3 pieces of. What I believe, is Mexican Hand-painted Wooden Folk Art, Unsigned. Many pictures on the largest 7x8" look hand painted on tiles with both sides a repeat of the other. Tops ones surrounding the framed mirror are different. The 2 small paintings- 3 1/2 x 3 1/2" have a picture each. All surrounded by wood and covered with glass. On back of the large one's mirror is a piece of material secured by small nails. I haven't opened this. All three have a back hangar to be hung The three appear to have been painted with goldish paint and areas have wear. One small nick on wood of larger frame. No cracks that I can see and mirror looks good with only 1 small black dot that won't come off. I tried. All very sturdy and nothing coming apart. Not sure how these were made or how old. MINTON 3-COLOR SHAKESPEARE TILE. SCENE FROM THE TEMPEST FEATURING PROSPERO AND ARIEL Designed by John Moyr Smith(1839-1912) for Minton Pottery. Stoke-on-Trent, England. Circa 1870s. Earthenware, 6 inches square. It does not appear to be marked on the reverse. Condition: There is an old chip. Roughly.25 by.125 inches, near the upper right corner. There are a few miniscule chips at the edges. There is some slight overall crazing. Surface dirt and frit on the sides and back. This handsome English art pottery tile by Mintons is colored in greens. Golds, and browns. Part of the series depicting scenes from various plays by William Shakespeare, it is entitled THE TEMPEST I- II. The tile depicts the scene when the shipwrecked Prospero beckons his spirit Ariel. According to Sparknotes in his conversation with Ariel. We learn that Prospero and ... morethe spirit were responsible for the storm of Act I, scene i. Flying about the ship, Ariel acted as the wind, the thunder, and the lightning. When everyone except the crew had abandoned the ship, Ariel made sure, as Prospero had requested, that all were brought safely to shore but dispersed around the island. Ariel reports that the kings son is alone. He also tells Prospero that the mariners and Boatswain have been charmed to sleep in the ship, which has been brought safely to harbor. The rest of the fleet that was with the ship, believing it to have been destroyed by the storm, has headed safely back to Naples. Prospero thanks Ariel for his service, and Ariel takes this moment to remind Prospero of his promise to take one year off of his agreed time of servitude if Ariel performs his services without complaint. We are pleased to offer this beautiful and unusual set of 3 older vintage(Mid Century) tables. The set includes 2 end tables and one coffee table. The tables are very nice and are made of hand forged wrought iron. They have simple. Elegant lines. They each have cabriole legs which are hammered along their sides. There is a decorative accent beneath the table tops of delicate wrought iron"C" curves with small gilted iron connectors in between. The legs are connected with twisted wrought iron on the lower sections. The feet are simple, upturned iron. The table tops are open with a lip that houses the beautiful tile. THE TILES! Pewabic Pottery was founded by Mary Chase Perry Stratton in 1903 in Detroit. Michigan. The company made many types of art pottery, including pieces with matte green glaze and an iridescent crystalline glaze. By 1911, Pewabic Pottery was using its famous Persian or Egyptian blue glaze. The company continued working until the death of Mary Stratton in 1961. It was reactivated by Michigan State University in 1968. For your consideration is a terrific pair of Pewabic ceramic/pottery tiles of a majestic Lion. And tall standing Giraffe. So they are from the tiny country of Andorra or the Catalonia region of Spain. The first tile(photo#2) is a bartender and man drinking. In Catalan it says"Qui beu. S'emborratxa. Qui s'emborratxa, dorm. Qui dorm, no peca. El que no peca, va al cel. Doncs que al cel anem! Bevem! My Goggle translator that that as something like"Who drinks gets drunk. Who gets drunk sleeps, who sleeps doesn't sin. Who doesn't sin goes to heaven"next part I'm not certain of literally it means"watershed in the sky" then so"Drink! The 2nd tile(photo#3) is Don Quixote and Sancho having lunch. Sancho fills up on"Materia" or something ... morereal. Don Quixote with his books and imagination fills up on"Espiritu" or Spirit. 3rd tile(photo#4) is of men smashing grapes with their feet. The Catalan is"Els que trepitjen raim per ballar no miren prim" Google has the rough translation as"Those treading on grapes to dance do not look thin" Something like that. Actually. A helpful eBayer sent me this translation: Since we go to heaven let's drink, those who tread on grapes are not choosy to dance. The tiles are a bit over 5.75" squares. All three are currently affixed to a piece of plywood. This is how I purchased them at an estate auction. The grout between the tiles is loose and crumbly. I believe the tiles can be removed from the wood but I didn't know the best way to do it so I'm selling them as seen in the photos. The edges and corners have some nicks and wear as seen in the photos. The tiles are have some dirty smudges on them but that does come off-I just made sure right now. They consist of a beautiful Ringnecked Preasant and Mountain Quail signed by A. Singer. The third tile is of two geese in flight(unsigned) With the wood frame they meausre 7 1/2" square. The backs have rubber protective bumpers when used as trivets(3 are missing) and holes drilled in the back for hanging on a wall. Solon and Schemmel Tile Co. San Jose California S& S 1920-1936 Albert Solon(1887-1949) immigrated from England to the U.S. in 1912. He studied at(later San Jose State University) He was employed as the pottery director at a tuberculosis sanitorium in Fairfax. Before moving to San Jose and teaching ceramics at the San Jose Normal School. 1] In 1920. He joined with Schemmel to found S&S tiles[ 1] 2] Solon designed the tiles and Schemmel headed the business. Both men lived in Willow Glen during the 1930s and 40s. Their work for Willow Glen sites included Willow Glen Theater(demolished) and the façades of homes on Telfer Avenue. Kotenberg Avenue and Willow Glen Way. 1] Schemmel retired in 1936 and Solon joined up with Paul Larkin. This auction is for one 8" x 9-3/4" Delft Blue Wall Plaque/Tile. Produced by Joost Thooft& LaBouchere, impressed mark on reverse) De Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles. The artwork is after Dutch artist, Jan Vrolyk. The subject is a pasture scene with three cows grazing near a cow pond in the foreground and a fourth cow grazing in the background with a farmer close by. I checked the Royal Delft site on the internet and found the following information about the letters and numbers on the back: the"393" is an internal company code; the"F" is the painter's initial; and the"AC" denotes the year code of its production, 1907. Condition: at the top of the plaque on the front. There are three areas of damage where edge pieces of the picture are missing. At the top edge on the back of the tile there are two ... morevery tiny chips where the tile may have once been toe nailed into a frame, as I have seen other examples displayed this way. With this pieces, however, there was no frame when we received it. There is overall crazing on both the front and back.
