Belgium Delft Blue Tile by GILLIOT& CIE S.A. Handpainted in Holland Dimensions 4 1/8 X 4 1/8 inches c. 2/8 of an inch thick For your consideration we present an original Belgium Delft blue tile. It was manufactured by the factory of George Gilliot in Hemiksen/ Antwerp. Belgium, but decorated by hand in Holland. As floor and wall tile factory, with John Salt, a ceramic specialist trained at Sèvres, as technical director. At the turn of the 20th century, the firm saw rapid expansion with a working force reaching nine hundred personnel in 1913. The last tiles were produced there in 1978 and the company was closed down by Sphinx Maastricht in 1985( the information is taken from the website of the British Museum in London) The ... moretile shows a Flemish foot soldier walking with a musket. Nicely glazed surface. Fine. Light colored clay with no mica(sparkling inclusions) No crazing. The tile is stamped with the factory's insignia: a capital H within a circle and the writing MADE IN BELGIUM(hard to see in the photos) There are 5 more impressed circles with a grid pattern within. 1 circle with the numbers 538 and S4F within and one more circle with the letters FF. The letters FF stand for the date of manufacture. Ie. 1966. It originally had a triangular hook for suspension. On the whole. It is in a remarkably good pre-owned condition! I can see no damage to the tile. We have a total of 11 tiles in this design. With no apparent damage. They may need a little cleaning. One of the tiles has the numbers 527 and S4N written at the back, and was also manufactured in 1966. All 11 tiles have traces of a blue stamp that originally said: Handpainted. It has the Sparkling Mica in the clay you can see on the back of the tile( had to take it off and then reglue it back on to get the backmark) I am not sure of the age as I don't know how to date the tiles. Hand-painted tile has been hanging around in the back of my grandmother's pantry closet as long as I can remember. Recently I was cleaning out the pantry, rediscovered the tile and decided to offer it here. The piece may be Dutch in origin. I've found many allegedly"Dutch" Delft tiles with identical blue corner graphic treatments. The figure is dressed in early 17th century hat. Waistcoat and poofy breeches! The sword he carries may indicate a military uniform of some kind or the European men, of the time, may have just carried swords as men, of the"old west" carried gun-belts!
