They were hand molded and fired in a kiln which"permitted us to fire nearly forty six-inch tiles at one fell swoop. Under expanded production the hand-crafting of tiles continued. They were"sun dried in a yard at the rear of the shed where cats and chickens frequently walked over them I offering a pleasing variation of texture. Even when he moved to the Los Angeles factory. Vintage Batchelder Advertising Tile with Batchelder LA featured on Front
Handsome approx. 3 x 3" tile to complete your tile Collection. This tile has the name Batchelder Tile Los Angeles on the front with two opposite facing birds. It is also stamped Batchelder Los Angeles on the back and appears to never have been installed. This tile appears on page 162 of Norman Karlson's book American Art Tile. I have photographed front. Nice vintage Batchelder tile approximate 6 x 6 inch. Seems to show a castle and potted tree-a familiar Batchelder Motif. Unfortunately the tile just have been creacked and the tile shows a repair which I did not know about when I purchased the tile. It appears full thickness and is photographed for your consideration prior to purchase. The repaired seam is just to the right of the ink pen refills that I have laid across the tile. Very Rare 1920s-1930s Original Batchelder Fireplace. This fireplace consists of 151 original Batchelder tiles. Including 78 4x4 Batchelder tiles 46 4x4 Batchelder bullnose tiles 28 2x2 Batchelder tiles 2 4x4 Batchelder picture tiles 2 4x4 Batchelder cobels and 1 very large 29x4 Batchelder tile. The fireplace measures about 65"x50" with a fire box opening of approximately 32"X28" The tiles around the opening are all bullnosed as are the tiles on each side of the fireplace running from the top of the fireplace to the floor. This fireplace features an amazing 29x4 Batchelder tile scene rarely seen. along with 2 4x4 picture scenes. The fireplace was hand salvaged from a great old house in Los Angeles. Vintage Batchelder 4 x 4 inch Parrot and Pomegranate Tile
Very nice tile by Ernest Batchelder of California with a Pomegranate and Parrot design. The actual measurements of the tile are about 3 7/8 x 3 7/8. And about 3/4 inch thick. The Batchelder catalog lists this as design number 511 and refers to it as"Pomegranat with parrot facing left" It has a really nice crisp and deep mold with blue/green detail glazes. And is in really nice condition for its age- it has surface wear and some minor chips on the back edges, but otherwise no other cracks or repairs, and no grout/cement(so it has never been installed) The back is stamped with the typical Batchelder mark: Batchelder Los Angeles. These tiles are original Malibu tiles that were hand salvaged from the estate of classic Hollywood Actor Mr. James Coburn at 1146 Tower Rd Beverly Hills These are really rare tiles made by Malibu tile co and were made with the very rare process called Cuenca The Cuenca method was to impress a design in the clay body of the tile in order to form ridges which separated the colors during firing it was a very delicate process used to come out with the best in end results! BATCHELDER ARTS& CRAFTS PERIOD GEOMETRIC TILE This vintage arts and crafts period tile was made by Ernest Batchelder. One of the best known makers of fine art tiles and one of the leaders of the Arts and Crafts movement. He originally operated in Pasadena, CA and later moved to Los Angeles, CA. He manufactured a wide variety of tiles from 1909 to 1932. By the 1920's his tiles could be found in homes and buildings across the United States. This hexagon tile has a semi-gloss medium sky blue glaze background with a nice geometric pattern in matte terra cotta relief. It measures about 4 1/4" from point to point and 3 3/4" from flat side to flat side. It's about 5/8" thick. It has never been set. It is signed on the back. BATCHELDER LOS ANGELES" This tile is in very good condition considering its age. With only ... morevery minor wear. There are a few small chips on the back edge, and one on the side near the back edge. These are not noticeable from the front view and would not be seen if it were set into a fireplace or other structure. I've done my best to describe this tile. This auction is for a beautiful vintage Batchelder tile that measures 3 3/4" x 3 3/4" and is embossed with a Roman style sailing vessel. Vintage Claycraft Batchelder Tile Fireplace Surround Arts Crafts Stickley Era
Here's an incredible find. This Arts and Crafts Stickley Era fireplace surround was salvaged from a local bungalow"remodel"which unfortunately means they are removing anything original) It's mostly intact. There are some tiles missing from the interior firebox area but I have three of them; the other three are missing. Since these are way up under there. Replacement tiles would easily blend in. There is a bit of damage as shown to the center tile above the firebox and someone also drilled holes in two areas, which could be easily patched. Otherwise. The tiles are in good shape. Some staining I believe but they are still very striking. The center tile was identified by an LA vintage tile store as being Claycraft. It measures 12" by 8" A tile this size alone is probably worth $1200-1500. The field tiles that are ... moreloose are not marked. I haven't been able to id them. If you have an idea. Let me know. They are similar to Batchelder in effect. The surround is attached to its original wooden framing and lath. It was originally used as a surround for a gas unit. That it why it was removed in one piece and not attached to brick. The nice part is that it's all in one piece with original grout. This could be reinstalled for use with a more modern"zero clearance" fireplace or simply used as a decorative centerpiece. The tiles would have to be removed and cleaned to use with an existing brick fireplace. Measures 56" wide by 48 1/4" tall. The firebox area is about 2 feet by 2 feet. Need other measures?
