Old Mercer Moravian little tulip tile selection 1904
This scarce Tulip tile is picture in the 1904 Moravian tile catalog. Each tile has the old red clay sagger marks. The erley tiles were leaned on there edges inside the saggers. Causing the glazes to run slightly. Old tiles also have messy backs, as Mercer was not concerned with finger marks, small cracks or irregularities in the hand rolling and pressing of the clay. Each one of these tiles has flecks of pigment that would move and streak on the surface of the glaze, enhancing the individuality of each tile. Moravian Tile Butterfly Bee Bug 1997 1998 Mercer Doylestown PA
Pair of Moravian tiles from the Mercer Moravian Museum in Doylestown. These tiles are made in limited production from the old molds of the tile works. In this group is a butterfly that mesures 2 3/4 inches wide at the widest and about 2 inches long. The bee is 2 3/4 inches wide at the widest and 2 1/4 inches long. There are three flaws on the butterfly and one on the bee. These happened in the manufacturing. If you need additional pictures or if I left out any other information you may need. These Henry Mercer tiles are in amazing condition. They are stamped HM 1976. They are 2"x 2" Please see pictures for greater details. Please ask any questions before bidding. Combined shipping is always available on multiple purchases from me. The Moravian Pottery and Tile Works was established by noted anthropologist. Antiquarian, artist, writer, and tile-maker Henry C. Mercer, a leader in the turn-of-the-century Arts and Crafts movement, in an effort to recreate early Pennsylvania pottery manufacturing techniques. In style, the Tile Works is an adaptation of the California Mission Church, partly chosen because Mercer believed good art came from religious faith; in construction it reflects the early use of reinforced concrete for industrial purposes. The Moravian Tile Works is his second building, constructed after the first was ... moredestroyed by fire. The name Moravian is derived from his collection of old Moravian stove plates. Mercer's factory produced tiles depicting Pennsylvania flora and fauna. Mercer was awarded a gold medal at the 1904 St. Louis Exposition and a 1921 gold medal from the American Institute of Architects. The Tile Works is owned by the Bucks County Department of Parks and Recreation and is open to the public as a museum illustrating Mercer's tile making techniques. The Moravian Pottery and Tile Works building is a short distance away from the Mercer Museum, and is a"U" shaped building constructed around an open courtyard. Built of reinforced concrete with concrete buttresses, measuring approximately 120 feet by 100 feet with arcaded court, it resembles a medieval cloister. The factory is 2 ½ stories built in tiers with towers. The gable roofs have rounded ridges of brushed concrete with steep parapets at the gable ends. Irregular chimneys and windows with a variety of decorative tiles are set in both exterior and interior walls. This is for a Moravian tile made in 1981 commemorating the old Moravian College. The tile is in very good condition with no chips. Cracks or repairs. The'v' and'i' in'Moravian' are missing some pigment, but this is in the manufacture and is typical of this type of pottery. The tile measures 4 by 4 inches, and it's 5/8 inch thick. Moravian Tiles (Set of 4 Pieces) Moravian Pottery and Tile Works
This is a set of 4 Moravian Tiles. Three pieces are of fruit and 1 piece is of a fox. The 4 pieces were purchased at the store at the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works in Doylestown. PA. We glued them to our kitchen backsplash for decoration and then removed them when we renovated. Therefore you will see the dried glue on the back side of each tile. The tiles are in very good condition generally showing typical imperfections resulting from the manufacturing process. The apple has a small chip on it and also a piece was glued back at the top of the leaf area. It is not very visible. The Moravian Pottery and Tile works has a long history of producing may beautiful and unique pieces. Search the internet for more details.
