Vintage'BATCHELDER' 4x4 Tile. Signed and Catalogged early work, LosAngeles UP FOR AUCTION In the early years Batchelder designed most of his tiles himself. They were hand molded and fired in a kiln which"permitted us to fire nearly forty six-inch tiles at one fell swoop. Under expanded production the hand-crafting of tiles continued. They were"sun dried in a yard at the rear of the shed where cats and chickens frequently walked over them I offering a pleasing variation of texture. Even when he moved to the Los Angeles factory. Where conveyor belts took the sand pressed tiles into the vast kilns, Batchelder's motto was"no two tiles the same. At first he worked almost entirely in brown, with blue glaze rubbed into the indentations in vines, flowers, viking ships, peacocks and other animals which Batchelder loved to ... moredraw. Nice vintage Batchelder tile approximate 6 x 6 inch. Seems to show a castle and potted tree-a familiar Batchelder Motif. Unfortunately the tile just have been creacked and the tile shows a repair which I did not know about when I purchased the tile. It appears full thickness and is photographed for your consideration prior to purchase. The repaired seam is just to the right of the ink pen refills that I have laid across the tile. Nice Reproduction Batchelder Tile with Rabbit 4x4 Tile Restoration Center
Great reproduction tile with a Batchelder Tile with a bunny made by the Tile Restoration Center. The tile is glazed in a nice replica of the Batchelder glaze. With mottled matte browns on the surface and a matte green in the recessed areas. It is not marked on the back; hover, there is a"GT" on the front surface(sort of) hidden in the laser left corner. It measures about 3 7/8 inches by 3 7/8 inches, and is about 5/8 inch thick. It's never been installed and makes a great display piece. It is in very near perfect condition- the surface is great. Vintage Batchelder 4 x 4 inch Parrot and Pomegranate Tile
Very nice tile by Ernest Batchelder of California with a Pomegranate and Parrot design. The actual measurements of the tile are about 3 7/8 x 3 7/8. And about 3/4 inch thick. The Batchelder catalog lists this as design number 511 and refers to it as"Pomegranat with parrot facing left" It has a really nice crisp and deep mold with blue/green detail glazes. And is in really nice condition for its age- it has surface wear and some minor chips on the back edges, but otherwise no other cracks or repairs, and no grout/cement(so it has never been installed) The back is stamped with the typical Batchelder mark: Batchelder Los Angeles. Original 1920 Clay craft tile fireplace surround This is a great fireplace surround made by Clay craft the measurements are 26 x34inside and 57 x35 outer measurements are without grout lines and can be adjusted accordingly. The surround has two corbels that were salvaged as well. Batchelder. Los Angeles, CA 1909-1932 Here is an early Batchelder tile. Made in Pasadena before the plant moved to Los Angeles in 1928. It features a large leaf within a 3-banded frame on the diagonal. Each corner has a stylized peacock and there is matte blue glaze in the recessed areas. Signed. Batchelder. Los Angeles, CA 1909-1932 Opposing birds are the focus on this vintage Batchelder tile panel made up of one 4" tile surrounded by 12 1 3/4" field tiles. The main tile has matte blue glaze in the recessed areas and there is a nice variety of matte glazes on the smaller tiles. In great condition; has a slab of cement on the back. L A Pressed Brick Scenic California Tile Batchelder
Los Angeles Pressed Brick Co. Los Angeles, CA 1887-1926 L.A. Pressed Brick primarily made architectural terra cotta, bricks and products for commercial builders. That all changed in 1907 when Fred H. Robertson(formerly of Roblin) joined the company and started making art tile. L.A. Pressed Brick was one of the first tile makers in California to produce tile with scenes. This remarkable polychrome tile has well defined images of children playing musical instruments in a park. It's very 3-dimensional, self framed and has an inscription: BRING THE COMB AND PLAY UPON IT" Deep rich glaze colors have a satiny finish. Measures 12" square x 7/8" thick and in great condition; has very minor edge wear. Shipping cost does not include insurance, which could run as high as $50 extra. It is highly recommended.

These tiles are original Malibu tiles that were hand salvaged from the estate of classic Hollywood Actor Mr. James Coburn at 1146 Tower Rd Beverly Hills These are really rare tiles made by Malibu tile co and were made with the very rare process called Cuenca The Cuenca method was to impress a design in the clay body of the tile in order to form ridges which separated the colors during firing it was a very delicate process used to come out with the best in end results! This hexagon tile has a semi-gloss medium sky blue glaze background with a nice geometric pattern in matte terra cotta relief. It measures about 4 1/4" from point to point and 3 3/4" from flat side to flat side. It's about 5/8" thick. It has never been set. It is signed on the back.
