Ancient Near Eastern Luristan Bronze Stag Attachment With Lapis Lazuli - 1000 BC
A rare ancient Near Eastern Luristan bronze attachment of a stag. Dating to around 1000 BC. A piece of delicate beauty, the ancient artist has skilfully captured the elegant majesty of the animal. The creature is shown resting. Its legs tucked beneath the body, indicated by light incisions to the surface of the bronze. The neck is straight, whilst the head is turned quizzically towards the viewer, the eyes and forehead inlaid with beautiful lapis lazuli. The ears are attentively pricked up as if the animal has been alerted to a sudden noise, the horns are naturalistically modelled, shown curving subtly behind the animal's head. This wonderful piece was produced by the expert metalworking society of the ancient Near East. The Lurs. The region of Luristan was home to a rich tradition of bronze-working in the early part of the first millennium ... moreBC. These ancient inhabitants of mountainous Luristan were pastoralists and would have followed an annual cycle of migration between their warm low-lying winter pastures and the high cooler summer grazing grounds. Their production of these remarkable bronze artefacts for which this society is primarily known took place largely during the winter months, when the low lying valleys were packed with their tented encampments. The Lurs delighted in portraying the myriad of creatures that inhabited their mountainous world, none more so than the stag, which appears to have been a revered and respected creature. A striking piece of ancient near eastern bronze working. This artefact is a fantastic example of its type and was produced by one of the pre-eminent artisan societies of the ancient world. Please note that this piece comes with a bespoke bronze stand(as shown) Height mounted: 3 ½ inches. Length: 2 ½ inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored and exhibiting a beautiful patina. It is unusual for decorative inlays such as the lapis lazuli on this piece to survive intact. Provenance: Ex. collection of Arthur M. Sackler. 1913- 1987. Sackler was one of the pre-eminent col
Ancient Near Eastern Luristan Bronze Mace Head With Snake Decoration - 1000 BC.
A beautiful ancient Luristan Persian bronze mace-head. Dating to around 1350-1000 BC. Luristan weapons are renowned as being both highly imaginative and advanced for their period. This remarkable piece is a particularly attractive and well provenanced example, coming from one of the most prominent collections of the 20th century. The bronze mace head with cylindrical. Ridged socket and body, decorated with blunt projections, likely stylised ears of corn. Running in between the projections are a series of snakes writhing up towards the top of the weapon. The function of this rare weapon is something of an enigma. It dates to a period when iron blades had begun to replace bronze weapons, at least functionally in battle. In all likelihood this fascinating artefact was intended to be carried as a display of wealth and rank, or possibly for enacting ... moreceremonial sacrifice. This striking weapon was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. And would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite Persian warrior. These individuals often served as mercenaries in the service of rulers in the lowlands of Mesopotamia. The ancient inhabitants of mountainous Luristan were pastoralists and would have followed an annual cycle of migration between their warm low-lying winter pastures and the high cooler summer grazing grounds. Their production of these remarkable bronze artefacts for which ancient Luristan society is primarily known took place largely during the winter months. When the low lying valleys were packed with their tented encampments. The Assyrian king Sennacherib's account of a campaign in Luristan territory vividly illustrates how the land would have been full of these temporary settlements during an age redolent with violent conflict: And their settlements which were numberless. I destroyed, I devastated, I turned to ash. The houses of the steppe, namely their tents, wherein they dwelt, I set on fire" A powerful piece of ancient near eastern weaponry. Expertl

Ancient Near Eastern Bronze Fertility Ring with Carved Ibex Motif 500-300 BCE
Ancient Near Eastern Bronze Fertility Ring with Carved Ibex Motif 500-300 BCE The Persian Empire was one of the longest-running empires in human history. Spanning over 2600 years, and stretching from Greece and Northern Africa(Libya) in the west, to the Indus River valley in the east. The Persian Empire was actually a succession of several Iranian(Iraniate) Empires that ruled over the Iranian plateau from around 728 BC, until the collapse of the Qajar Dynasty in 1925. Persia was situated at the heart of the ancient“Silk Road” trade route, and was the beneficiary of the many riches that transited from China to the Roman Empire. The Empire began around 500 BC. With the forming of the Median Empire(532 BC—369 BC) which defeated the Neo-Assyrian Empire(Lydian) with the help of Babylonia. The Medes were consolidated with the Achaemenid Empire(est. ... more705 BC—330 BC) under Teispes(died 640 BC) son of Achaemenes) who became the King of Ansan, and the first King of Persia, after seizing the city of Ansan(modern Tall-iMalyan or TepeMalyan) from the Neo-Elamites(1100 BC—539 BC) The empire’s capital was at the ancient city of Persepolis. Which began construction in 525 BC, as well as the ancient cities of Pasargadae and Susa. The size empire was greatly expanded under Cyrus II the Great(600/576 BC—530/529 BC) who ruled nearly thirty years, conquering the Median, the Lydian, and Neo-Babylonian empires, and dying in battle with the Scythians along the Syr Darya river in central Persia. The Achaemenid Persian(Hakhamaneshiyan) Empire came to a close nearly five generations later. With the death of Darius III, or“Darius the Great” 336 BC—330 BC) who was killed in Bactria(modern-day Afghanistan) during the conquest of Alexander the Great. As an iconic motif, the sun was always associated with Persian royalty, and ancient Greek historians noted that a“crystal image” of the sun always adorned the royal tent of Darius III. The Asiatic. Or Persian Lion(Pantheraleopersica) has also been an important motif in ancient

Ancient Syro Hittite Pottery Near Eastern Horse And Rider Figure - 1150 BC
An ancient near eastern Syro-Hittite horse and rider figure. Dating to approximately 1500 BC. This rare terracotta horse and rider is of highly stylised form. Both the animal and rider are shown with the deeply incised eyes typical of Syro-Hittite figures. With bird-like face and crown of hair falling across the forehead. The rider clings tenuously to the horses neck. The short stubby legs, widely spaced eyes and almost snout-like mouth of the horse make it an abstract, almost comical depiction. Being great horsemen allowed the ancestors of the Syro-Hittites to travel and conquer places far from their remote and rugged homelands in Asia Minor. To represent the importance of this animal in ancient Syrian society. The image of the horse and rider was prominent in art and architecture from the period, often adoring the monumental arches and ... moreruins of their lost cities. Often these were powerful warrior images, however this piece is different; here we have a more touching, human depiction, the scene appears light hearted, almost like a child's toy. Height: 3 ¼ inches. Length: 2 ¾ inches. Condition: Good. Restored from fragments. Provenance: Ex. Royal Athena Gallery. New York, 1966. Subsequently in the collection of a New York City family. Ancient Near Eastern Bronze Age Elamite Bronze Mace Weapon - 1500 BC.
A heavy ancient Near Eastern Elamite Bronze Age mace-head. Dating to 1500- 1000 BC. This brutal weapon is of classic form. With a long cylindrical ridged socket and bulbous body, with multiple thick bosses radiating from the upper shaft. This striking weapon was produced by the Elamite society of the ancient Near East. And would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite individual. In all likelihood this facinating artefact was intended to be worn as a display of wealth and rank, or possibly for carrying out ceremonial sacrifice. The Bronze Age peoples of Elam in south-west Persia were a warrior-society about which relatively little is known. They were contemporaries of the old Babylonian civilisation and were eventually destroyed by the other great empires of the ancient Near East. Length: 7 inches. Condition: Very good. ... moreA small section of the base restored. Exhibiting a lustrous. Dark brown patina. Provenance: Ex. Collection of C. F. Funes. NYC, acquired 1960's-1980's. Ancient Near Eastern Early Bronze Age Holy Land Jug / Vase - 2200 BC
A wonderful ancient Holy Land Bronze Age terracotta jug. Dating to around 2200 BC. The body piriform. Rising into a wide neck and everted rim. A series of small strap handles connect the shoulder and neck, whilst two upturned handles sit on the midriff. Decorated on the neck with incised dotted decoration and small pairs of appliqued clay, appearing as if they were human eyes, peering out at the viewer. With an attractive rustic appearance. This vessel type would have been used for the pouring of wine and water. Many vessels from the Holy Land during the early Bronze Age might be termed somewhat coarse and soulless. This is certainly not the case with this rare and eccentrically decorated piece, indeed one can almost feel the personality of the ancient potter emanating from its very surface. The decoration is pointless, yet compellingly playful ... moreand inventive. Height: 8 inches. Condition: Very good. Age related encrustation. Some minor chips(as shown) as is common with genuine ceramics of this period. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. British private collection. Large Ancient Persian Near Eastern Bronze Age Short Sword Blade - 1200 BC
A large ancient sword blade. Dating to the Late Near Eastern Bronze Age, approximately 1200- 800 BC. The long blade is of slender form with a subtle mid-rib and flat tang. Designed for insertion into a wooden pole or handle in antiquity, now long since perished. This piece was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. Their production of these remarkable bronze artifacts for which ancient Luristan society is primarily ... moreknown took place largely during the winter months. When the low lying valleys were packed with their tented encampments. The Assyrian king Sennacherib's account of a campaign in Luristan territory vividly illustrates how the land would have been full of these temporary settlements: And their settlements which were numberless. Ancient Syro Hittite Near Eastern Terracotta Fertility Goddess Idol - 2200 BC
An exceptionally well preserved ancient near eastern Syro-Hittite goddess idol. Dating to approximately 2200- 2000 BC. Merging both animal and human elements. This primitive figure is depicted with a distinctive beaked face, elaborate headdress and deeply incised eyes. Shown naked with the exception of a necklace and tied sash around the waist, the short arms and thin legs serve to highlight the hips, which are typically broad for a fertility idol of the period. Though they have been found over a wide area, this example has been preserved in particularly fine condition, most remarkably, the original copper earrings are still in place. There is a strong sense of the supernatural about this enigmatic idol. It is at once mysterious yet familiar. The head is distinctively bird-like; yet the body, necklaces and earrings imbue it with the feel ... moreof a human figure. This fusion of characteristics has led many to conclude that these figures were intended to represent deities, possibly a goddess of motherhood. Indeed they appear to have been commonly buried beneath doorposts, possibly to ensure the fertility of the women of the household. Height: 6 ¼ inches. Condition: Exceptional. Unrestored and with some salt deposits encrusted on the surface above the nose, a reassuring sign of authenticity. Provenance: Ex. Belgian private collection. Acquired 1980’s. Ancient Near Eastern Tablet with Cuneiform scripture (800-1000 BC)
A Near Eastern Tablet with Cuneiform Scriptures. Circa 800-1000 BC. Measuring 4 1/8“ x 2 3/8” x ¾” Approx. This Piece showcase an excellent example of ancient writing(Not translated) I bought this piece in 2011 from a Brazilian archaeologist. Historian and Egyptologist, who is the person responsible for the construction of the Neo-Mamluk Complex in Rio: Al-Sultaniyya Cultural Complex and the Archaeological Museum of Mankind. Per the Professor description. This piece is in good and stable condition, but partially eroded in some parts of its surface and borders with small chips, and very worn, certainly due to the age/atmospheric conditions. This piece belonged to a private collector in Rio de Janeiro. As part of a collection of items purchase in Damascus in 1923 and brought to Rome afterwards, and to RJ in the 1950’s. Cuneiform is known ... moreas one of the earliest system of writing. Is a system of writing first developed by the ancient Sumerians of Mesopotamia circa 3500-3000 BCE. It is considered the most significant among the many cultural contributions of the Sumerians. The name comes from the Latin word cuneus for'wedge' owing to the wedge-shaped style of writing. In cuneiform. A carefully cut writing implement known as a stylus is pressed into soft clay to produce wedge-like impressions that represent word-signs(pictographs) All of the great Mesopotamian civilizations used cuneiform(the Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians, Elamites, Assyrians, Hurrians and others) until it was abandoned in favor of the alphabetic script in the course of the Roman era. I am a collector with over 20 years of experience in the hobby; I have acquired many interested pieces around the world. Anywhere from private collections to highly known auction houses. But now I have reached the time on my life on which I have to start setting up my retirement. So I have taken the tough decision to depart with some pieces of my collection and let a new owner enjoy them as I did. During the next couple of moths I will be placing more of m
