Ancient Near Eastern Luristan Bronze Moufflon Head Whetstone Handle - 1000 BC
A stunning piece of abstract art. This highly decorative ancient Luristan bronze whetstone handle dates to around 1000 BC. Coming from one of the pre-eminent collections of ancient art in the 20th century, this piece reflects a character, emotion and skill of a particularly high quality, and stands as one of the finer Luristan bronzes we have handled. Cast using the lost wax method. The lower body of the piece transmutes seamlessly into the form of a stylised moufflon(wild sheep) its exuberant horns curling back towards the body to form a pair of rings. The large eyes, pricked ears and open mouth are confidently reflected, whilst the legs, tucked in towards the body, give the impression that the beast is jumping through the air. These elements combine to lend a sense of life and motion that one does not often encounter in Luristan bronze ... moreworking. Emerging from the animals neck is another. Striking scene, a small moufflon is shown being attacked by a strange creature, biting the face of the young animal. The shape of the head might lead one to conclude that the aggressor is a wolf, yet the distinctly anthropomorphic hands gripped round the sheeps neck suggest a mythical beast of some kind. It seems likely that this scene is referencing a narrative tale that would have been immediately apparent to the ancient viewer, yet is now lost to us. An ancient Luristan Persian axe with ram decoration. Dating to around 1000 BC. The axe is of classic Luristan form; with a flaring. Robust head and cylindrical socket with ribbed decoration. A decorative ram lies at the back of the piece, reduced to the essense of form in a striking depiction. Blunt ended axes such as this weapon were designed to cause depressed fractures and deep lacerations to the head. Though this piece adheres to that design, it was probably originally for ceremonial use. Produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans, this weapon would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite Persian warrior. These individuals often served as mercenaries in the service of rulers in the lowlands of Mesopotamia. Circa 1500 BC to 500 BC. Bronze with an encrusted green ancient patina. The form is quite abstracted and stylized. There is a thick cylindrical. Hollow bottom to attach the staff or sword onto and a hole where it may have been pinned into the sword or staff. The hollow tube is encrusted with soil on the interior. The knobbed form is decorated with rope-like sculptural designs giving the appearance that the pommel is tied in place onto the sword or staff. Authentic Ancient Bronze Luristan Pin ~ circa 700 B.C. ~ This is an ancient bronze pin from the ancient Luristan region of what was ancient Persia and it from a civilization that existed thousands of years ago. T he Luristan region is known to have been the center of a bronze age culture during the time of Mesopotamia. Luristan is a bronze age culture found around 1930 and since that time the region has been the subject of many studies and found to be a center of bronze-age activity. This pin has the green patina of a bronze artifact that has been corroded over time and the metal near the terminus is slightly pocked. This artifact is in good condition and it comes mounted in a Riker Mount glass top case with a brief description written on the back. This pin measures 5 1/2" long and it is 1" across.

Ancient Bronze Horse Bit with Mouflon sheep Cheek Pieces Luristan Iran B.C. Description: Listed here is a Bronze Horse bit with cheek pieces cast in the shape of a Mouflon sheep. Research tells us that this ancient bronze item is from Luristan. Now Western Iran and dates from the first millennium BC most likely between 1000 and 700 BC. The mouflon sheep are still well defined and measure 5.5" tall at the top of the horns and 4" wide at the widest point. The bit is 9.5" The ends of the bit pass outside the cheek pieces and end in loops for cheeks straps. Total weight of this item is 1 pound 11 ounces. The bronze has an appropriate aged appearance and shows expected signs of aging. I find no cracks or indication that pieces have broken off. Item was found among the items of a collector who has forgotten where and how he obtained ... moremany of his treasures. Very Large Ancient Near East Luristan Bronze Age Battle Sword - 1000 BC
An ancient Near Eastern Luristan bronze split‘ear’ pommel sword. Dating to around 1000 BC. A formidable Bronze Age sword. The long blade with a broad mid-rib. Tapering to a point, the bifurcated pommel cast onto the hilt, itself separately cast to the blade and joined with a v-shaped section. The distinctive shape of the pommel has hollow sections which would once have contained inlays of bone or wood. The pommel is also adorned with incised decoration. At first glance this impressive sword would appear to be utilitarian weapon. Designed simply for battle. But look closer and you will see that the blacksmith has taken time to inscribe various patterns across the pommel. A care and attention that suggests this was a prized object in antiquity. A fine example of an iconic Near Eastern sword type; it is hard to find a genuine example on the ... moremarket in this condition. Length: 35 inches. Condition: Excellent. Ancient Luristan Bronze Standard Finial, 1st Mellenium BC, Master of the Animals
Luristan Bronze Standard Finial Caspian Sea Area. Ca. 1st Millennium BC A cast bronze finial depicting a- Master of the Animals- from the epic of Gilgamesh, having an upper stylized central anthropomorphic figure holding back a feline in either arm, thus mastering them. A lower standing figure and a central bearded head flanked by two bird heads. 8.25" Tall description: A high quality finial or standard top. Cast in the form of a tube which is partly anthropomorphic and partly theriomorphic, and which has a creature on either side, not unlike the later Roman Janus-headed figures. The creature depicted has the stylized face of a human or- more likely- of a god, with an elongated nose, large ears and large round eyes; it is, as often, impossible to tell whether it is a male or female creature(see Moorey 1971, p. 153-154) On either side ... moreof the figure we see the gaping mouth of a predator or a demonic creature, the throat of which the figure is gripping with its hands. Additional animal heads can be seen on the torso and near the waist, and birds heads are projecting from the necks of the other creatures. The lower part of the body of the figure seems to be that of an animal, with crooked legs resting on what could be the stylized head of another animal. The whole object depicts a scene of long-standing significance in ancient Near Eastern art. A scene which has often be called(confusingly, see Moorey 1971, p.154) the"Master of the Animals" In ancient times such objects would have been joined to a standard. A pole or other support. In this case it is supported by a tapering bell-shaped stand, which may or may not be belonging. It is not known with certainty how such standards were used.
