THANK YOU. Here is a stunning and very desirable approximately 150 year old antique Japanese small Choba tansu. Or merchant's chest, dating from the Meiji Era around the mid to late 1800's, featuring a lock bar in the center and classical safe compartment at the bottom right. It boasts a natural light colour with a rich honey patina, beautifully shaped hand forged iron hardware, wood peg construction and 8 drawers of various sizes that provide versatile storage options including a full width drawer at the top. It is in excellent overall condition for it's age. But has a little lock issue: as there is no key and the top drawer lock is in the closed position with the drawer open it will not shut all the way. The safe compartment has a tendency to swing open by itself since there is no key to lock it. The lock issue does NOT affect the lock bar which slides in and out of place properly. Please read the description and examine the photos for more details on the condition. Locksmiths and larger antique dealers will own sets of multiple keys to fit a broad range of locks so you should be able to get the drawer unlocked easily enough so it slides into place. With a little patience you could also find an antique key that fits right here on ebay(I can recommend a seller who regularly stocks this type of item) Other small issues worth noting are a small repair in the bottom corner of the smallest drawer just above the safe compartment. The larger top drawer is stiff to open and close due to age and needs a tweak, and one corner plate in the back is bent out of shape. Given it's age there is some wearing off of the blackening of a few small spots of the iron, and a couple of small nails are missing. I am not positive of the boxes origin but I believe this is Folk Art. There ... moreare hand painted tulips on the edges and hand painted white flowers used in early American art. The measurements are 17 inches wide or long. 9 1/2 inches in height, and 7 1/2 inches deep. The chest/ Box weighs 11 pounds. It does have wear which is to be expected for it's age. The paint on the flowers have faded in some places, there are a few cracks on the wood, one is on the bottom(does not go all the way through, and one is on the inside of the lid. Wood shrinks with age and cracks are normal. There are a few places where wood has chipped off(one on the foot) the lock is missing and there is a heavy patina especially the places that would get the most use(by the handles. The front side has a darker patina(see 2nd picture) than the back side, it was probably sitting up against a wall and was covered on the top. The feet did have felt pads at one time. The rivets(or nails) are old type nails. It is made very well, it is very heavy and sturdy and it closes fine. It is a very beautiful piece whatever its origin is and the paint job is intricate and looks like it was very time consuming. Please email with any questions I will be glad to help. Here is an antique Steamer Trunk Wardrobe. The sides are flat so this could be used as an interesting coffee table. The outside brass has a little oxidation and there are assorted nicks and dings from use but overall it's in pretty good shape. It has all four(4) drawers. The top drawer locks and I believe one of the keys works in that lock. All the hanging mechanisms work- the hanging bars extend out etc. I have all the wooden hangers(see photo) It smells a little musty inside but probably nothing Febreeze and fresh air won't fix. The lock on the outside works and I have two(2) original keys plus a new one I had to have made when I locked the keys inside. I have always called this the Circus trunk because I bought it in Sarasota. Florida which has very strong circus ties. Similar ones seem to be from the late 1800's but this is unique in the fact that it is covered in metal with wood trim. It has a flat top. Removable tray and wheels that I placed coasters over. Somewhere all the road someone lined it with old wall paper. That paper is also old as there are areas where it is coming off and very worn. It would make a nice project for someone to re line the inside with different vintage paper. There are many old age cracks and repairs. There is a center narrow piece of wood at the very center of the top that has been replaced. There is some old termite damage near the bottom. But then I noticed the latches for padlocks and opened it up and realized this is an old strongbox. It is wood on the outside and Steel lined with chains for the lid as well. Very high quality. I am not sure the age of it, but it could be antique. Condition is good with normal surface wear, no major damage and its a big Chest or trunk size at 17.5" tall, 28.5" wide, and 18" deep. This is a nice vintage steamer trunk with a long lock in a brick red color. U fortunately. The trunk i s actually locked and there is no key. I closed the latch. Not knowing that it would lock. Condition- Good with typical signs of usage. Such as dings and dents, mainly on the top. No rust issues on the gold metal. Inside is very clean and nice with no odors, rips or tears, I peeked in before I closed the lid. Would be a nice trunk for someone that is familiar with locks and could open it. Large Antique or Vintage Trunk. In good condition. Made of wood painted black on outside and has paper lining on inside. Measure 36" wide. 24" tall, 22" front to back. Leather handles on sides are torn off and need replacements. Has metal corners, brackets, hinges, lock. Lock is an'Eagle Lock' with no key included, and unure if it will work. Has some kind of hard leather or hide like material around edges. Has an identification sticker on top which cant be fully read, but is shown in photos. Can only make out location, Newark NJ, and above that the last 3 letters of name'ard' Paper lining on inside in poor shape and metal bracket on inside, that holds top lid from swinging to far back, is broken and needs replacement. Found at the famous Marche Aux Puces(Flea Market) in Paris in the 70's by a woman furnishing her Paris apartment. This authentic Indian wedding/dowry chest was acquired from the woman's estate when all of her furnishings(and her Yves St. Laurent couture) were shipped back to Marin County upon her death. Dimensions are 38" high with wheels. 30" high without wheels, 27" wide, 46" long. The chest is 50+ years old, probably more. Fantastic statement in an entry. Vintage Shaker style Cherry or Maple Drawers Accent piece Chest- Wonderful!
I do not deal in antiques so will describe this piece in as much detail as possible. It is a small chest of drawers which I believe is made from maple or cherry but I am not certain. It does match the cherry dropleaf table it sits on. It is heavy weighing 12 pounds 15 ounces. It was handmade by a woodworker named G Roth and has been in our family for many years. My grandmother said she found it in a shoppe in upstate NY. The drawers are all notched into one another and the chest is put together by pegs of wood. You can see in the pictures. The backer board does have some headless nails holding it on and there is an old green piece of flannel or felt on the bottom. It has a wonderful patina and feels smooth on the outside. The drawers fit exactly in their compartments. Any wear is age related but there are no big gouges or scratches. Please ... moreask any questions and I will take more pictures. Vintage Birds Eye Maple Queen Anne Lowboy Chest Salesman's Sample
This wonderful little Queen Anne style lowboy was used for years as a jewelry box by an elderly relative. It is made of birds eye maple and has dovetailed drawers and glue blocks on the joints. Just like a full size chest. It measures 5" x 10-1/2" x 8" high. It is in excellent condition. The top has a little bow to it, but not bad. I'm not sure of its origin, but I know where it has been for the last 50 years or so.
