Crazing, cracks or losses of any kind. Label on back of tile reads KUMSTINSTITUT FUR PORZELLAN MALEREI MERKEL-HEINE WIESBADEN. There is an impressed mark 115 and hand written in pencil 1489. There is also a handwritten label which I am unable to read and have pictured. I believe it may be the artist. Labels at the edge attach the tile to the frame. These labels are for Foster Brothers, 4 Park Square, Boston. The gold cardboard backing is held in place with brass nails. It is secure but some of the nails are missing. RARE Antique Turkish/ Ottoman Kutahya/ Iznik Pottery. BEAUTIFUL Plate Measuring 12.5" in Diameter Up for auction is a rare and beautiful example of early Turkish pottery. A plate from Kutahya dating to the 1st or 2nd quarter of the 20th century. This comes to us form the estate of a family that emigrated out of Iran during the revolution of 1979; this was one of the items they brought out with them when they immigrated to the U.S. at that time. There is an old repair to the rim, as shown below, as well as a couple additional rim chips. However, these do not intrude beyond the rim nor do they interfere with the beautiful, hand-painted classical foliate design, rendered in turquoise, cobalt, green, yellow, and a cupric or ferric red- as can be seen in the photos of the plate, it displays beautifully. The scene is a United States Air Force WWII Fighter Plane pulling out of a dive. Over turbulent seas, with a calm sky in the back ground. NOTE the 5 beautiful horizontal red bands on the rear stabilizer, and the United States Air Force Insignia on the yellow wing tips! It was shortly used as a hot plate or something a long time ago. 2 beautiful and very rare gems are these early 1900s French Camille Tharaud Limoges pâte-sur-pâte enameled porcelain plaques with oval ormolu frames. Pate sur pate(paste on paste) is a process of porcelain type clay being built up to produce the raised detailed images and then enameled. The frames are in gilt metal. A technique called Ormolu. Click link to find out more about this process. Each depict a woman dancing and playing instruments of some sort. They measure approx 8"H x 5 1/4"W To me they appear different sizes sitting next to each other in the picture but I can assure you they are the same size. Bit of an optical illusion. These will hang beautifully offset at the end of a hallway or anywhere else. These are not easy pieces to find and to find a pair of them together is even harder. This is a rather rare lot of 5 unique and old manganses Delft tiles featuring a nautical(ships) scene on each. Three tiles are framed and two are in very good condition. The remaining three have hairline cracks and crazing. Even so. It is hard to find these old tiles without missing pieces. Each measures 5 1/8” square and are about 1/4" thick. As you can see, all have been previously used and were salvaged. We purchased this lot approx 30 years ago at a antique shop in Europe and they have been in our smoke free home ever since. Does show crazing that is consistant with age. The tile measures 4 1/4" x 4 1/4" x 3/8" thick around the edges. The glaze is very beautiful. But on the bottom corners there does appear to be a slight rainbow/irridescent coloring(pictured) that is only visible when light hits a certain way, but does not appear to be any damage around the spots, so it may clean up easily if the buyer wishes to do so. I am offering on Buy It Now an antique tile from Mintons China Works. This very rare find from circa 1875 consists of a cobalt and white tile from the Mohr Smith Industrial Series from Stoke on Trent. England. The tile measures 6" X 6" and 1/2" thick. This tile depicts a Tanner and his helper at work a a hide with a brick wall background. He looks like a strong layman working at his trade. The scene is very detailed and there is old English writing saying The Tanner. I have noted that this rare tile is in very good condition with minimal wear as seen in the pictures. This tile is marked on the back and has slight cement residue from use. I am selling several other tiles from this same series in varying condition. Beautiful, Very Rare Hamilton Ohio Tile, Playful Cherubs, Dog, 12 by 6 Inch
A beautiful and rare Hamilton Tile Works pottery tile with a playful scene of cherubs and a large dog. One cherub is riding the reluctant dog while two are pushing him from behind. And two are pulling him with a rope from the front, while a couple of others can barely be seen in the background. One who is pulling him looks to be a faun, with goat legs. The back says"Hamilton Tile Works Co. Hamilton Ohio. This fascinating tile is 12 inches long; 6 inches wide and about 5/8 inch thick. It has a few tiny flakes in the glaze- on the edge and on one cherub's lower leg and foot(see photos) The tile is from the late 1800s. Hamilton Tile Works was in business 1883-1901. Wedgwood Ceramic Etruria Ware Tile circa 1880 Old Mansion Very Rare!
This is an extremely hard-to-find tile by Wedgwood. It is in a soft sepia tone and it measures 6 inches square. The tile is in really exceptional condition with no. Cracks, stains or other defects- there is just minor fleabite wear around the edges but really so minor considering its age and rarity. There is quite a bit of crazing but I believe this is part of the original design and in no way detracts from the beauty of the tile. It is stamped"Josiah Wedgwood Sons Etruria" on the back and there are some(indistinguishable) pencil marks plus someone has written, in pencil, Old Mansion" but I'm not sure if that's the official title of this piece. Lot Of 23 Rare Antique American US Encaustic Fireplace Art Tile Laurel Wreath
Up for bid is a lot of 23 antique ceramic fireplace art tiles by US Encaustic Tile Company(American Encaustic) probably from about late 1800's to early 1900's. The raised relief is of a gorgeous laurel wreath that was glazed with a greenish gold color. The tiles measure 6" by 6" and are 1/2" thick. I have not cleaned the front of the tiles- they will be shipped as presented. The back of the tiles look pretty good. It is rare to find a large quantity of matching tiles in this type of condition. Crazing is present on all of the tiles as expected. A few of the tiles have some wear on the edges. A few have some surface issues- please make sure to look at all photos carefully. Brother of Ezio himself a painter and ceramist, enters young to work in manufacturing glazed pottery of the brothers Minardi. At the death of the last heir of the factory in 1913, along with some colleagues, including Louis Masini, detects the premises and equipment and continues the activity. Since 1917 Castellini and Masini remain the sole owners and change the name to" Castellini and Masini. In 1922, this alliance is to melt, Castellini opens own studio in the back of his home by his brother helped Ezio and the pieces that come out of his furnace are marked with the initials FC. This is a beautiful antique Dutch Delft blue and white six-tile panel painting depicting a rural scene in Holland. C1900, with a man shoeing a horse in front of the local blacksmith shop and another man inside working in the fire near an anvil.very detailed(the light area at the top of the closeup picture is from my flash) In the background are thatched roof homes and a large windmill. It is signed by J.C.V. Hunnik. The tiles are mounted in a strong wooden frame creating a beautiful tray with brass handles. This tray is one that even in Holland hard to find. If you like Delft Blue than this is one you can't miss. It was never used. Only displayed on the wall, and is in excellent condition overall. Rare! Exquisitely Painted with FINE detail of a young well groomed mustached aristocrat. Gazing to the slight right with piercing Blue eyes. He is dressed in a period 1900 black suit jacket and vest. With blue Ascot, white striped shirt with pearl buttons. Marked with impressed KPM mark with scepter. The plaque is Large 11 1/4" High X 8 3/4" Wide. Fitted in a later simple but nice frame. Corners so-called“lily” According to Pluis. Design to be catalogued as B.13.00.01. The dark blue enamel is brought on very thickly. Probably following a new recipe. The painting has not flowed during the firing of the tile, what should be expected in applying the enamel so thickly. The tile for those reasons must be expected to be RARE. Some specialists told seller that the tile is an original and for that reason very exclusive. Other specialists told seller that the tile is not an original but a badly executed 19 th century reproduction of this design. Painted on a 16 th century white tile.
